My first and only tattoo is on my ribs. I've got a very high pain tolerance and had to actively convince my artist that I could handle it. He was actually so surprised at how well I took it that he ended up charging me quite a bit less than the original quote because it went so fast. The first thing he told me when he finished was "Well now that you've gotten this you can get any other tattoo, because it's not going to get much worse than that." It was pretty sensitive for about a week, and actually getting it felt like a really bad sunburn that someone was dragging a sharp nail over.

Something that I've noticed is eating helps a lot. My first tattoo was a large black & grey under-bust piece with heavy shading; I used the 4-7-8 breathing technique for meditation and relaxation and ended up falling asleep for a short bit of the process. Id say that breathing techniques & mindset are the biggest things that affect pain vs. peace while being tattoo'd. I repeat some thoughts in my head along the lines of feeling nothing but vibrations of electricity, and I stare at the fluorescent lights above and imagine myself and everything around me being composed of atoms and electrons dancing, and everything is connected yet separate, and basically just distract myself and pull my focus away from my body and into my mind. Your mind is a powerful tool.

I only have 1 tattoo and it's about a year old now. I got it behind my ear, on my neck. I have a huge fear of needle so I was internally freaking out. I found it felt like either a hard scratching, or like a light scratch on a sunburn. No big deal at all. I felt like an idiot for being so freaked out. Coming from someone who often fears pain, no big deal at all.

Ooo, digging the intro!! Just last week I got my biggest tattoo to date on my inner arm, pretty much stretching from almost my arm pit to almost my inner elbow. Surprisingly it didn't hurt as much as I thought it would as I was being tattooed - in fact, the closer he got to my arm pit, the more it just straight up tickled-, but I think a lot of that is because I was building it up in my head. The healing sucked a lot though. Tooooootally looking forward to going in next month and getting it finished, haha. Oh yeah, it's also the only one where I experienced "tattoo flu" right afterwards. Probably because it was my biggest/longest session.
@chezlin8 жыл бұрын
Oh, it was totally my most painful yet, but totally bearable still (for me at least, we're all different in terms of which areas hurt more)! My tattoo artist and I were laughing at how every time I come in for a new tattoo I'm going bigger and in a more sensitive area. I almost moved the placement just because I was scared of the pain. So glad I didn't though! Thankfully it's only a temporary thing, and then you have awesome artwork on your body :D Good luck next week, I'm sure you'll be able to make it through!! :D

Reading during the tattoo is what helps me the most, I'm able to completely forget the pain during small periods. Pick a book you know you'll love and will have no trouble getting into though! Otherwise my bigget problem is getting very tense and forgetting to breathe so I like to make sure I am as relaxed as possible and breathing calmly from time to time during the session. I appreciate your admission of your "tattoo hangover". I just recently got the outline of my first tattoo which is basically a half sleeve. The thing I was most surprised about was the pain in the butt that is the healing process. I was shocked that despite all the tattooed people I know, I had never heard about how hard it is to sleep or just exist the first few days with a new tattoo! Actually getting the tattoo, I was a total champ through. I was kind of a baby for the following few days though. I go back in for the coloring in a couple weeks and I expect that hangover to be even worse. I'm at least glad that I know what to expect now. Thanks for helping me feel not so alone!

I got a tattoo two days ago on my right calf. Everywhere on youtube and websites you see people asking which places hurt to get tattooed. While it didn't hurt all that much, I only found out the last couple days that the healing is way more painful than getting the tattoo. Everytime I stand up and take the first few steps it hurts like hell, but then it thankfully fades pretty quickly. Why did I never think about this?:P

I got a wolf face on my sternum with flowers coming off to both sides connecting to my side pieces which both go from my armpits to the bottom of my ribcage... the hardest part was definitely the wolf head as I had to hold my breath while the needle was on me. I'd imagine that that fact lent a great deal to the pain level because it adds stress. My most painful tattoo was definitely the owl I have going from the bottom of my sternum to my lady parts because a) it's a giant piece and b) it covers a lot of sensitive area plus a lot of scar tissue I have. The one thing you can do to help the most with pain is to concentrate on breathing, as you said.

The best way to get tattoo's to hurt "less" is to not think about the pain. Focus on something other than the pain. And I put less in quotation marks because it hurts just as much, you just don't let it affect you. I only have 2 tattoos but I would love to collect more. My first tattoo was on the very top of my shoulder and it was painless. So I thought I just had a high tolerance for pain or something...wrong. My second tattoo is on the top of my foot and it was very painful and I love it, but it has faded quite a bit where my foot bends. We for the most part avoided the bend of my foot except the beginning of the tattoo so that's a bummer. For whatever reason the touch up was way worse than the original tattoo. I have to go back again for one more and see if there is anything we can do to make it stop fading...even if it means trying another color or another type of ink. I'd suggest not getting a foot tattoo unless its like directly in the center.

I got my first tattoo a couple weeks ago. I have low pain tolerance and I hate needles. I went in with a lot of excitement. I just told myself it wouldn't be that bad, and it wasn't! It was just a small quote on the inside of my upper arm. I ended up tolerating the pain pretty well because my friend was there to chat with me. I also chatted a bit with the artist. I had to just immediately get over my fear of needles, and I was able to do that with distraction and of course breathing. The closer it got to my armpit, the more I had to just focus on breathing. There was one point where it felt like a knife going into my arm. My nerves were also odd, like I had a short spasm in my stomach! Always worth it, though. I can't wait to get more in the future!

I have my chest tattooed. It's the phases of the moon and they are 7 tattoos all together. I laid down for the tattoo, and I was super comfotable the whole time, I think your comfort level really determines the pain you experience. I also think I have a high pain tolorence, because it wasn't extremely painfull for me, but i've heard otherwise from people I know with chest pieces. The tattoo was done in one session and took about 2 and a half hours. We had one fifteen minute break for my tattoo artist to get something to drink. The outlines of the moons hurt, but that shading was easy. On a pain scale from 1-10 it was about a 5 and a half, and the healing time was minimal.

This is just about the breathing thing, I have no tattoos at all, but just from singing experience, if you breathe with your "stomach" maybe that would help? Like, breathing with your chest is quite shallow and I can imagine would super not work getting the sternum done, but if your tried breathing with your stomach it might work? I'm not sure!! Just a suggestion so you can get the honeycomb! :)

I totally agree about pain and the position you're placed in. I got the top of my foot tattooed for my first one and I was in such an uncomfortable position as I was holding my leg down and sort of sitting more on my left butt cheek and it just made everything more stressful. My foot was twitching which was out of my control as it hit different nerves. I felt so bad. The first line work session wasn't so bad...but the second one was all shading and I could not imagine going a second longer than I did...let alone another two hours. And agreed that breathing properly helps immensely! Again, good luck. I can't wait to see it :D

super old video but....why couldnt you lay down for the thigh piece?
@TheDaniKinz8 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with her about "natural position" part. Whenever I had the line work done for my thigh piece, I thought I was in a pretty comfortable position until about an hour or so in when my other leg started to go numb. I'm not talking about a little numb either, it got to the point that I couldn't feel my toes and my entire leg was cold. I became so focused on the thought that they were going to have to amputate my leg that I barely felt the needle anymore. Breaks were taken because of this, and I learned to bring a jacket or small pillow to offer support for positions that are difficult to keep for long periods of time.

I have behind my ears, arms, back, legs tattooed, my foot and ankle hurt really bad. The nerves in my ankle kept making my foot twitch. I have to say the skin inside your arm is killer. My chest/neck piece was by far the most painful thing I've gone through. The space in between my brests was excruciating and it's taken me 10months to work up the nerve to get it finished. I'm not looking forward to the pain but I can't wait for the finished work. Then on to the next tatt...

Just got tattoo number 13 of mine today on my foot. I have both feet tattooed along with a variety of others and the feet are by far the most painful. So I completely agree with your pain level assessment of those!

I have my chest and sternum tattoed... and I can tell you- at least for ME the chest was definitely waaaay more painful! it was horrible 😂 I even needed a break after half an hour... luckily the whole thing took just about an hour :)

I have three largish tattoos. The first is mostly on my calf but wraps around my ankle and onto the top of my foot. I would describe the pain from the line-work as a sharp pain, like being scratched, and the color-fill work more as a dull pain, like someone scraping over an area that's already sore. But where it went across my shin bone and also on the top of my foot, that felt like being stung by a bee! The pain is really brief and fades quickly, but it is so hard to hold still when every instinct screams to jerk away. My second tat is a rib/waist tattoo. I have to agree that ribs are not a fun place to be tattooed. It takes much longer because there's nothing to press against, plus the skin moves as you are breathing. Across my waist was fine, but that's covering a scar that has no feeling anyway. The little bit that went onto each hip was quite painful. I find the areas of the body that are most ticklish are also the worst to be tattooed. My third tattoo is on my thigh and goes down around my knee. The thigh wasn't painful at all, although this is a large tattoo that required many sessions to finish and pretty much covers my entire thigh. But going around my knee was hell - extremely sensitive and extremely painful. I haven't noticed that the healing was really any different for any of mine based on placement, except that the lower leg took a little longer because it is farther away from the heart.

It might sound weird, but every time I have been tattooed I focus my mind on the exact area being completed in order to turn the feelings of pain into anything different (such as warmth, tingling, or just plain numb). This was especially the case under my biceps and near the wrist bones... those areas were more painful than anticipated. But like you said, you don't have to be a tough person to endure it. Everyone has different tolerance levels & if you really want that ink, then you'll get it done regardless. Another great video, Ms Qcknd!

I think it all depends on pain tolerance. To me armpit hurt a lot. My elbow, the part where your arm bends, forearm, chest, fingers, and leg all didn't hurt to me. Ankle/foot hurt some. Hand only hurt when he did the knuckles. Top part of my shoulder in front not back that was really painful for me. Had to grit my teeth for once. To me getting tattoo feels exactly like it is a needle. I always go in expecting the worse and my tattoos rarely hurt. They were all tolerable. Everyone is different though :]

My first tattoo was actually on my chest. Its a symbol the size of my fist and below it text about the size of my open hand. It was by far my most painful tattoo, and i have that, a piece below the back of my neck, my right leg from the knee down and the backs of my ear lobes. The backs of my ear lobes were nearly painless, not behind my ear but if you pinch your ear where your thumb goes. Also, having a conversation or listening to people talk helps a bunch.

Like they say, pain is subjective. 2 weeks ago I got a half sleeve done in 7 hours...just the outline. Only area that was a little more than irritating was dead center inner arm and top of shoulder/clavicle. My appointment in 2 more weeks for the shading should be fun!! Another 5-6 hours!!

new intro looks great! foot and near elbow ditch have definitely been the worst so far. radiating pain is so real, my side/rib tattoo was like that...the closer it got to my stomach and fleshier parts, pain would go to my center on front and back, but i'd do that again over the bits near my elbow ditch any day.

Damn girl, you are hard-core! I had a tattoo that took 9 hours that we did in one session, on my inner bicep that after about 6 hours was getting super painful. With the last hour and a half creeping into my armpit. And that was a whole new level of pain for me getting tattooed. Before that my sternum/stomach was to worst tattoo pain for me until this experience with my inner bicep/armpit. And it not only was super intense in the armpit, but I could feel the pain running through my entire body. My calfs in my legs and my abs were super sore the next day from how much I had tensed up from the pain of my armpit while trying to sit still for my artist. If it wouldn't have been the last hour and a half, I would have tapped out for sure. I've got tattoos all over my body. I would consider myself heavily tattooed before I got that tat done. And to hear you went in to intentionally get your armpit done, makes me sore just thinking about it.

For my left outer arm my tattoo artist had me sitting comfortable and it barely hurt. For my right the artist hand my arm in a position where my hand kept falling asleep and it was a brutal four hours. Totally depends on how comfortable you are!
@aiyanaland85278 жыл бұрын
My first tattoo I ever got was on my ribs! It's a bunch of black & white flowers and a pretty good size. Getting it done was craaaaaaazy painful especially closer to my armpit, but once it was over I was perfectly comfortable. My healing process wasn't nearly as bad as yours though- I was just kind of sore as it healed and never had any pain while cleaning my tattoo.

My first tattoo was a new school koi that takes up a good part of my upper arm. It didn't hurt all that much, it burned then any thing. My seconded is a set of smaller tattoos, text and shaded paw print. The set are on the inside of my ankle. The most I will say on the pain was that it hurt a bit and I could feel the vibrations in most of my leg.

My first tattoo was a full chest piece. The outlining took 4 hours with no breaks and the coloring and shading took another 4 hours in a different session. The pain was not bad at all. The parts that hurt were near the throat, collar bone and around the nipple. The sternum kind of felt good when then artist was tattooing in that area. If you want a tattoo and decided on the placement go ahead and do it. I went for one of the most painful areas first and am glad I did.

The chest isn't as bad as the ribs and stomach, not even close, trust me. If you can do your ribs then you can do your chest, no problems. At least the upper chest.

I have my chest. Its a huge raven shoulder to shoulder. It was definitely my most painful tattoo and it didn't help that it took the longest 12 hours total 6 hours each session. I'm glad that it's over lol. I have full sleeves and about 30% of my legs. Also the pain radiated to my neck to the point where I thought he was tattooing my neck. It was not fun.

I have a small sunflower on my chest, on my right side, and it legit didn't hurt at all! buuut I'm a bigger girl w/ big tits so I feel that is related? this makes me wonder if my inner bicep would hurt less than others, too? any chubby girl viewers have thoughts?? either way, that was my first tattoo. so you can imagine how shocked I was when I got my second tattoo on my calf! i was like WTF! haha but i was very quiet about it. btw I'm loving your videos especially these tattoo talks!!

I didn't have a problem with any of my tattoos until I got a larger piece. Four hours in, I realized I definitely should've had a better snack break so I started to feel a bit shaky and the pain itself felt like drilling into my bones because he was going over the same dark spots over and over again. It was awful but worth it and now I know I can handle ANYTHING because that was torture.
