I agree, in this version Frollo is more "pleading", it's much softer, much "safe to work", in the French version, he is really driven mad by his love and desire, and that make him really angry because he doesn't know how to deal with that, something that I feel is missing in the English version, sadly...

No matter in which language, the lyrics to this song are one of the best things ever performed in the history of modern opera! One can prefer a version or another, but those are just details... this is a superb poem in any language! I'm italian but i also love french and english versions. "My winter heart is a spring flower/ burning in hell as if it was wax/it's you who blows the flames/you, beautiful strange mouth/i spy you, want you and beg you/i'm nothing and you are true" (from italian)
@mammylove115 жыл бұрын
after discovering this musical and watching all versions, i have to say that daniel is THE best Frollo. his understated, repressed actions show the absolute hard rigidity of the easthetic celibate preist. His voice and stiff movements show the bursting out, barely contained frustrration. Great , thoughtful acting, wonerful voice, and yes, he's cute too. You feel the pathos of this character, and cannot hate him, only sorry for him, and angry that preists need to be repressed in this way. M.x

I don't get why they didn't just translate it as "you will destroy me". It'd fit the melody perfectly, while keeping the original sense! But if they _had_ to go with the whole love idea, then it should have been "MY love will kill me" instead, since she doesn't love him. Though I guess a more accurate translation would be "desire will kill me", since he doesn't have romantic feelings for her either...
@CJCroen13937 жыл бұрын
I think Frollo's trying to shift blame onto her, believing that she's some evil witch who's sending feelings of desire and lust into his brain.

It's no Hellfire, but it gets the same point across whilst still sticking true to Frollo's character in the book. It really drives home the point of an obsession and desire that's driving someone to hopeless madness.

I really love the Russian version, with Marakulin, but the English one also gives me goosebumps, how much passion and pain there is in the lyrics, you listen and understand that Frollo is not a villain, but a victim cornered by church dogmas and vows and out of desperation became an executioner.

@palliah213 жыл бұрын
@Cossynieur With "Your love will kill me" and "You will destroy me" in both versions he is blaming her. It wouldn't make sense if it was "My love.." or "This love...". The first puts him in the blame and in the second they are both to blame. I wish they had stuck with "You will destroy me" too, it conveys that it will not only wreck him as a person but his position in the church. "Your love will kill me" works here though because the loss of all these things would lead a metaphorical death.
@thenewsophialoren13 жыл бұрын
@Cossynieur I think its just the lyricists not being to fussy- 'your love' seeming to encompass his massive desire and love for her ,and 'her' power over him, namely her allure and sensuality that causes his love! What I mean is I think the one phrase is supposed mean a lot!
@kingericio15 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing when I heard this... I love both versions though, but I love the French one just a little more. It's not as aesthetic a sound though "you will destroy me" translation choices sometimes work with as long as the meaning is still there. I am impressed with how they keep the general ideas and still make it rhyme, translators get a rough gig, I think these ones did great. Still the french version is better!

Don't really understand why the English version is called "Your Love Will Kill Me" when the translation "You Will Destroy Me" works just as well and makes more sense. Esmeralda has no love for Frollo. Perhaps it's his delusion?

Most likely his delusion. Frollo is likely trying to project his own flaws onto Esmeralda.

If you haven't read or watch Monster you wouldn't get this but this song reminds me of Franz Bonaparta from Monsters and this part in this wiki "When the woman was being held in an isolated ward, Bonaparta slipped and made the biggest possible blunder; he fell hopelessly in love with his very own research subject. His distorted expression of love included erasing Viera's past, and all who knew her - he wanted to be the only person who could acknowledge her existence. In return, she not only rejected him, but despised him beyond belief. Even during her pregnancy, Viera sworn she'd never forgive him and vowed that even if she died her children would exact revenge. After he had kept Viera under surveillance in the Three Frogs Building for six or seven years, he began to feel regret for his actions.

In my acting class we made an alternate version of Notre Dame de Paris with more heavy themes (if that was even possible) we used some of the english lyrics and this one was given in a plate for us. It makes no sense for the scene in question but we constructed a total new meaning to it. first thing we changed was Esmeralda: changing the female to a male named Gabriel that is not in love with The Captain, but want to enjoy life by having the 3 people in love with her (The Monster, The Priest and the General) second thing: we changed phoebus to a female known only as "The General" just because we needed 2 men and 1 woman falling in love with Gabriel third: This song, we changed the entire scenario, instead of The Priest character (which ironically was me) would run back to his room and find Gabriel waiting for him there, in the bed no less. There The Priest would sing this to reflect that he's losing himself and that he knows damn well that Gabriel is toying with him and the other two that fell for him and in the last verse he would just give up and join Gabriel. Fourth: Many other alterations, but we didn't use everything of Notre Dame de Paris because... It was acting class... We don't have that kind of time and money to put so much effort into recreating the masterpiece that is this incarnation of True Art
