Barnabus said 2 things that explain Tuba Skinny's enormous success and their quality: "we play together all the time" and "we enjoy playing". And, may I add, we, the audience, enjoy listening to them - a lot!...

I saw Tuba Skinny here in So Cal in 2019 when they played in Eagle Rock at Temple Beth Israel. At the intermission, Barnabus came back to where my wife and I were sitting and started up a very pleasant conversation with us. He struck us as a very 'salt of the earth' guy who really loves to play music. Really nice guy. If you ever get to see them in person, they are very very down to earth and serious about their craft. I watched Robin study his song list book for 45 minutes before they even played. Real pros.

A statesmanlike performance from my hero Barnabus Jones. A modest man who inspired me to pick up my trombone and play. That was 5 years ago and thanks to You Tube I can join in with the Band in my acoustic Kitchen. When they talk of the Trombone Greats they never consider ensemble work. Barnabus gets the balance right and his support of Shaye is a delight to behold. Tuba Skinny is the most significant band in Jazz for 50 years..

A lot of frustration in this comment section concerning how little was revealed about the band and his reluctance to elaborate. But this just adds to the lore, mystique surrounding tuba skinny. The placid on the surface but immense energy and sophistication just below is absolutely part of what endears us to them. We’re left wanting more. perfect!

Thanks for putting a voice to Barnabus and his trombone.I live in the UK and am totally addicted to this band.Their repertoire appears endless, and it's all great stuff. They have additions to the group from time to time,so the balance changes, but it's always good, great talent.

Great interview and Barnabus Jones seems to express the essence of Tuba Skinny...he is refreshingly candid and unassuming and down to earth; in essence 'a regular guy' who loves the music he plays.

Interviewer needs to come loaded with questions and lead the conversation for such guys like Mr. Jones who is obviously introverted. One of the best trombone players around he is, this Barnabus. Long time fan I am. Had the good fortune of seeing The Skinnys in Philly. Y'all come back now.

Good to get this band's members talking as it is an intriguing sound and played so well. Barnabus Jones is an extraordinary trombone player but among all members that are uniquely extraordinary. Very organized with the leadership of Shaye Cohn the coronet player.

A great band anybody's book. Tuba Skinny bring the numbers to life in all their performances and I am astounded at how smooth and easy they make it look. It would be great to be able to see them playing in New Orleans, but it is rather a long way from Derbyshire in the UK. I love that they have video footage of their work taken by a dedicated group of regular supporters (James Sterling in particular) allowing people like me to enjoy something we would otherwise never see. You are very much appreciated in many places! Thanks for what you do!

I give you props for trying, Franklin. These kind of things are hard to throw together, on the spot. I'll consider it a "first effort", and you are stuck doing what the artist is comfortable with doing. I suspect, based upon what he said, that the way to do these interviews is over food. Thanks for posting this.

What a great idea, an interview. This is something I'd like to see. Has to be an interesting story behind their forming and the draw to the music for each of them. This is obviously not the era they were a part of or should even know anything about yet they step into like they lived it. Perhaps an interview of the group as a whole if they'd be willing to sit down and do one and share their stories. They just jell so well together at least from what we see and it's amazing since they all are so young yet have such an in depth feel and understanding for the music they play, which is so unusual. Lord, each one of them is so talented and seems to have their own shtick or character that they portray.

I find this interview interesting but uncomfortable to watch. My interest in members of this band is far higher than my knowledge about them, and I think that is how they prefer things. These folks seem to want to talk to us with their music rather than sharing in other ways. Who could complain about that, given how generously they entertain us musically?
