They play it through in Eb - a key in which it sounds just fine as an instrumental. Then at 1 min 09 secs there is a sudden switch to Bb for a whole chorus - a typical Tuba Skinny tactic, but here to set it up for Erika, who is comfortable singing it in Bb. Then at 3 mins 52 secs, there's another instant switch back to Eb for the exciting out-chorus, starting with Shaye's improvisation against stop chords. Quite an arrangement! - though it happens that the original Victoria Spivey recording in 1929 went through precisely the same sequence and keys, so I guess they modelled their arrangement on hers.

Shaye is so extremely talented that she could have gone in any direction she wanted with her roots and education with the classical piano that she studied and mastered. I salute her, and wish to support them, for coming down to New Orleans and starting a resurrection to save an early musical art form that we have almost lost. She also possesses a rare ability to locate and work with the very talented band members that she brings to the table. The band is passing the test of time to continue the long road to success, because most young groups like this become worn out, get discouraged, and break up within a very short period of time. Tuba Skinny has shown the determination to continue on well past that point, and after 10 years are continuing to get better every year.

Cornet....trumpet is longer and slimmer....cornet sound is somewhat warmer...to each his/her own, eh. I am glad Shaye selected the cornet...it suits her style of playing and her personality...she is a humble person and not flamboyant as say Dizzy, who is also a great musician. She has some of a Japanese trait not to stand out...like me, a Japanese Canadian.

Just saw these guys last weekend at the d.b.a and Maison. What an absolutely amazing band! I don't think that there's an ensemble anywhere playing their style of music any better than this. I'm counting the days 'til the Delaware Valley Bluegrass Festival so I can see them again. For now, I'll just have to be happy with the CDs. The folks in NOLA just don't know how lucky they are!
