I can't help but wish that electricity was banned from street performance, or at least taped backing. Acoustic instruments sound best au naturel. Even at most so-called "acoustic open-mic nights" nowadays, there's a mic (hence the naming i suppose) and a PA and if your guitar hasn't got a pickup, you're stuffed. Is it because so few people in this day and age simply don't know how to shut the f*** up and listen? This lot have got brass, woodwind banjo and percussion players who give it some welly and a singer who can project so they're sitting prettier than most but it should always be properly acoustic in my book.

I wouldn't go so far as to say they're the best I've ever heard, but they are right up there. For that style of jazz, they are excellent. My all time favorite will always be the early '60s Dave Brubeck quartet, with Desmond, Wright, and Morello. In a different vein, I heard the Duke Ellington orchestra perform live, and had the rare privilege of interviewing Mr. Ellington after the show for the public radio station I worked for. What an amazing gentleman! That was just a year before he died.

When I was a kid in Ohio, 83 years ago now, my granddaddy would slip away to New Orleans and then New York, he had a shop out back where he did repairs on all sorts of things and an old record player, vinyl of course and he'd have music playing. . .King Oliver and Louis Armstrong were favorites before Louis became popular outside of NO. I was learning to play piano and I listened to those jazz piano players and learned how to play "rhythm" piano. . .Armstrong's wife was great. TS takes me back in my late years to my childhood and I love it. Good musicians just standing up and letting go outside is the real thing no mics or electronics in sight. Wish I could go to NO and sit and listen. . .well, maybe my next life. JIM M.

Jazz underwent a major split in the mid 1940s known as the bebop revolution. Most of the jazz you hear these days is post-bebop jazz. Here you see traditional jazz, which is pre-bebop. So there is traditional jazz, swing jazz, and gypsy jazz that all belong to the the pre-bebop styles I'm sure you'll like them all. This is jazz back when jazz was popular music.
