I'm Australian, living in Mindanao with my Filipina wife, and I have a great love for the Filipino people, and for the beauty of the Philippines. I knew that the Philippines accepted Jewish refugees from Germany when no other country would, but I had never heard about the White Russian refugees in the Philippines. My late wife in Australia was from a Latvian family. Her parents emigrated to Australia in 1949, around the same time as the resettlement of the White Russians. It is possible some of the people we knew in the Latvian community in Australia may have come to Australia in the way described here.

This part of Philippine history would never have been known, were it not for the efforts of Annaliza Gonzales, former mayor of Guiuan, Eastern Samar, her daughter Kinna Kwan (who did first-hand research and production of the video) and the President Elpidio Quirino Foundation. Kinna traveled to several countries to interview some of the original refugees and their descendants, as well as some Filipinos who made friends with the White Russians and told part of the story, in order to portray an accurate accounting of how President Quirino and the Philippine Government played a big role in saving the lives of over 6,000 White Russians who were escaping Communist tyranny, first during the Russian Revolution and later during the Communist takeover of mainland China. Lastly, I am proud to have been part of that history.

we may be cash poor, but it is ingrained in us that we are rich. that's why it's easy for an average Filipino to give even if they have less, to smile even if they themselves are sad. we are always taught that the world is not about ourselves, but about us as a community. i'm always glad (and proud) that we are practicing Catholics. not just Christians because we memorize the Bible, but true Christians because we practice what the "word of God" teaches.

We may have encountered many disasters and challenges in life but we can still afford to smile and laugh at them. We may be considered among the poorest but we cannot deny food and drinks to any visitor especially during celebrations. Our houses may not be as grand as the others but we can always welcome those who need shelter. We may be in pain but still we are capable of providing comfort. President Quirino is probably the nicest President ever lived. Not only did he release Japanese soldiers back to Japan after the war but he also opened his country that is badly damaged by the war to people in need. When I read the story about how he forgave the Japanese and released them knowing that those same people was the same people who took his wife and children's life blew my mind away. It must've been the hardest decision he had ever made in his life. Specially with the anger of the Filipino people towards the Japanese army. I truly commend him from the bottom of my heart. As was mentionned before, the Philippines had and still have a very open culture. Humanity runs strong in the heart of most Filipinos. I remember the big vietnamese refugee camps in Palawan I did visit over 30 years ago. I am married to a Filipina for 32 years and I love the people. Of over thirty countries I have visited the Philippines are probably the most hospitable place on this planet. The world is small: One of my Pinoy nephews in Germany married a girl whose parents lived in the very same refugee camp I visited 30 years ago. I have friends here in Switzerland with Russian and Tartare ancestors who were of noble offspring and who worked for the tsar in Siberia. I think they had also some Swiss blood allowing them to escape and live here in Berne.

What refugee has luxury? It’s survival, having a place to settle. When then Filipino Pres Quirino took them with open arms and later visited the camp and ordered putting down the fence, in their own words, it was a symbol of acceptance and hospitality, not to be treated as refugees but as part of the community. Humanity at it’s best. Anyone would take that over being imprisoned, worse killed by the communists.

There are a lot of stories happened in the past that was historical are not included in books just like the Battle of Yultong, How Philippines saved/rescued Russians, Jewish and Vietnamese and etc. It makes me feel like what they have taught in school is not the whole history, there's a lot of thing we actually do not know of.

The experience of watching this was a amazing! But as a filipino, I'm saddened that this wasn't taught to us in school. I should have known this - filipinos should have known these parts of the history. Maybe, that's why a lot of filipino students get bored in history is because these parts weren't taught. But not to me, I would forever love learning our history and roots. I am overwhelmed by how our country saved the lives of these white russians and refugees - as how our country saved the jews - and I also admire the russians there for their resiliency! Now, I also appreciated the talents and hopefulness of these russians! They are absolutely the reason why they survived as well! If they didn't do something or just depended in the Philippines so much, they wouldn't have lived a life like that. But no, they made their ways to continue living even with a lot of struggles that they weren't used to face such as the typhoons and the problems on foods and tents. I am so happy to watch this! Thank you so much! This is so wonderful! Love from the Philippines!🇵🇭

If the Syrian, Afghan, African & other refugees coming to Europe esp entereng in Greece or Italy are encouraged to do the same what the russian refugees did in the Philippines ( building their own camps, schools, hospital etc.) the refugee problem & racism here in Europe would soon be eased if not resolved. Refugees here are not given chance to work, all are just depending on what the govt decides to do for them. Can someone suggest that to EU Comission dealing with refugee problems?

I loved History since I was in grade school to high school. I was one of the few kids that actually listens to what a history teacher says. It's sad and disappointing that there's still so much in Philippine history that we don't know of because it wasn't in our textbooks back then or wasn't tackled that much.

Both times were similar that they were driven by love for humanity. Thank you for sharing this awesome story i had never known even though i am passionate about Philippine History.
