As an Englishman Tubby is my favourite Aussie captain, and now he's my favourite current commentator. Love these stories. I cant imagine many teams felt like they could bully any side with McMillan, Simcox and De Villiers in it!

I think he was our best captain. He had this attitude that we could win even when we were in the hole. He knew when the make a change at a crucial moment

And with tubby he always came across as a custodian of the game. Knew he was the real deal when he retired vs Pakistan as to not beat Bradman score-then Hayden stuffed that up against a minnow. By far my favourite captain that played whilst I've been alive(50)

Man even in SA people are just brainwashed in thinking Aussies are bad okes because of cricket. I'd ask them, have you actually met an Aussie? Most reply with no and I dont want to. Idiotic. Aussies are awesome people. Very similar actually to us SA okes in that we don't follow this PC bullshit, we're loud, and we just like a good time with some top banter. I think the general bias towards the Aussies definitely stems from cricket. It was the overall feeling from the South African cricket fans that Aussies tended to cheat in cricket and often had the umpires on their side when playing against SA. Honestly, I do feel there is a lot of merit to this. I saw some games that had blatant WTF moments (England were no exception to this bias). Overall, I think the Aussies are just competitive as fuck. I've met a few in my life and I've had a great time with each and every one. The only other country I reckon I'd feel at home in.

@@MrMiratana If by "bad sportsmanship", you are referring to sledging, you are correct. In my book, sledging is a part of any game. It's a form of psychology designed to put an opponent off their game. But, having said all that, there are only two types of sledging: 1) Intelligent and humorous. 2) Boorish and dumb.

I was at Adelaide Oval for the last day of that 1993-94 Test. It was Border's last day as a player on Australian soil. De Villiers was night watchman, I think that Sth Africa was 3 down at stumps on Day 4. De Villiers batted all through the morning session, still 3 down at Lunch. I reckon it was still 3 down at drinks in the middle session too, around then De Villiers kept on walking away between deliveries, and then he made one false shot nearly getting caught in the covers. His concentration had obviously gone. He was out soon after and South Africa went down in a screaming heap to be all out about 20 mins after Tea. One of their players spat the chewy and had a hissy fit in the changerooms smashing up a wall/window with his bat, just to make the victory even more enjoyable. A real Test lovers day that day.
