That's great! Perfect illustration. Used your advise to great advantage this past summer / fall in waters around City Island, NY. Now I see it with a fish's eye view.

i could never catch blackfish well, because I was too fast to set the hook. I had no one, and no internet back then, to teach me. I quit blackfishing out of sheer frustration. To hear it, and see it here, would have been a godsend back then!

Great video John. Could have used the tips yesterday. But I did manage to catch my first 2 Sheepsheads yesterday. Fishing in the Lemon Bay, Grove City area of Englewood.

Those cameras are really cool, I want to mount one on a long piece of PVC. It should make it easy to find concentrations of flounder around bridge pilings. I fish in less than 10' of water most of the time. A fish finder can show the structure but not the flounders. So I think in the spring I'll try a camera for spotting fish. On the subject of anchors for kayaks, I went to buy a mushroom anchor at Walmart and they didn't have any. But then I spotted the kettlebell weights and I got a 10 lb one. It's been a perfect anchor and it was half the price of a mushroom anchor. Then a friend said he saw kettlebell weights at the used sporting goods store for $5. I haven't figured out the best way to tie it off yet, but I'm happy with the weight for my anchor. The loop makes it easy to tie on.

An anchor trolley, like the basic Yak Attack one, really helps.

I've been wanting a real-time underwater camera system ever since I first watched your Fluke videos a couple years ago.. Now you show us Sheephead behavior habits... So I just pulled the trigger on this CanFish camera system... lol

I think you'll like this. It's simplistic, easy to set up, and just works.

John, this is such a great video. I love the mixture of fishing and underwater footage. Unfortunately I needed to cancel my monthlong stay on Marco Island this year. So, I’ll live vicariously through your videos this February. Is there any chance that you’d be willing to do a video on what environment you find mud crabs and how you harvest them?
@JohnSkinnerFishing3 күн бұрын
I get them under oyster clumps along the shore.

Great video! Can you do one with fiddler crabs or other types of bait as well? Im not completely convinced that the big ones always pick it up the bait and run with it with other baits.

Fishing with fiddlers. They pick it up and go, just like muds. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aquzn4OImqhmms0

Hey John, this is not related to Florida species, but I was talking to my aunt at Christmas about fishing off the party boats out of Sheepshead Bay back in the 60s and 70s. We were reminiscing about going out for winter flounder (starting around St Patrick's day), mackerel later in the spring (catching over 100), whiting and ling in the winter, the occasional overnight trips for cod or tile fish. It seems the few boats that are left don't go out for any of those species anymore. I've heard you talk about winter flounder disappearing, but did you used to fish for tile fish, ling, whiting, etc back in those days? Other than the mackerel, they were all good tasting fish.
@JohnSkinnerFishing3 күн бұрын
I fished for winter flounder, mackerel, and cod on LI, and they're almost all gone now. Yes, there are some, but generally not enough to target. I think whiting are in low numbers too.
@pati39922 күн бұрын
Thanks for getting back to me John! That's sad to hear about those fisheries being in decline. There were so many mackerel and whiting back then that it was literally like shooting fish in a barrel. Winter flounder were also very abundant.

is that an old gulp shrimp on the bottom?

Some kind of shrimp. Unlikely Gulp, because it would be chewed up.

I was fishing the mangroves in the Fla Keys. My guide told me to close the bail manually because the fish could hear the click when you close it automatically. Your thoughts?
@JohnSkinnerFishing2 күн бұрын
I really doubt it. I just can't see how it can transmit. Also, I've recorded lots of underwater video and have never heard clicking.

This whole business of some fishermen insisting that fish can be easily spooked by sounds above the water line is just not true.

Hi John, great video and camera. Love watching you but the only problem is it gets expensive 😉. The good note is the 45$ discount they give pushed me over the edge and I bought the camera. Your teaching of waiting has taught me to catch 10 plus pound black fish. Also the old school guy I fished with stopped setting on everything and is now a serious jig fisherman. It took a while but now he’s a believer. Bob ct.

Awesome about the blackfish and your buddy! This camera is a decent setup. Very easy to use and not so pricey like a drone.

@ oh yeah got that chasing drone with pickup claw after I saw you with yours. I like the simplicity of the new one I just ordered. My grandson can’t wait to get his hands on the drone. Have a great holiday.
