What i liked about the Peel sessions is that it was raw and unpolished, capturing the real soul of the artist before the nob twiddlers got involved.

Jeez, I remember recording this session off the Peel show with my cassette recorder. It got many plays after; loved this session. Tubeway Army were the first band I liked that none of my friends were into. Managed to convert a few when Replicas came out, shortly after this.

Numan, like every successful artist, took from and was inspired by a collection of sources. BUT....Numan brilliantly invented a new pop sound, image and delivery. He did not invent electronic pop, he created his own style; sound, stories, image, lyrics, live shows/performance style.

I'm going to see Gary next week at the 02 Academy Bournemouth ((R)Evolution Tour). Started browsing relative links and came across this. Wow! I bought all the early albums and remember the Tubeway Army vinyl album which captured some early interpretations of later, reworked material (Everyday I die). Agree with the comments here, the synths sound as fresh and futuristic today as they did over 40 years ago. I saw Gary live in 84 and again in 08. Both were exceptional gigs, and very loud! Looking forward to joining the Numanoids next week for a much anticipated concert. :)

I most probably listened to this session back in January 1979. It was common to go to bed back then with a tiny transistor radio and listen to John Peel under the bed sheets. This was my 'apprenticeship' with music as a young lad not quite a teen. He played Buzzcocks, Stiff Little Fingers and loads of stuff that wouldn't get played in the day time. He once played Stiff Little Fingers Straw Dogs and said if you didn't like it, buy it just for the B side (Can't Play Crap On The Radio, should have been the A side!). Rest in peace John.

great astounding cool xlnt , no more words can describe what gary numan has ''put into''.. (must be a better description/words for it , because it is sooo important what he 'did') .. the music industry , no , put into 'music', as a whole , is more appropriate . It is also very appropriate that JOHN PEEL, made this session happen , because , on january 10th 1979 , when he recorded this set , for the BBC Radio One ''John Peel Show'' , the rest of the world were totally ''un-aware'', of this band from London calling themselves ''TUBEWAY ARMY''..... they had not charted any of their records at this moment in time ... it is so appropriate that gary numan , and , John Peel , made this together , it is a true testament , to Mr. John Peels vision , and ear for real talent , to find an unknown , underground energy , before anyone else...... TUBEWAY ARMY charted four months AFTER THIS , with 'are friends electric,?' , . .. the rest is now in history . .

I agree Mark. I was, at the time, a massive David Bowie fan. I was so influenced by the music press at the time, I was a closet Numan fan, with copies of all his vinyl material at that time. I am now delighted he's making a return. Let me tell you why. It is artists (story tellers), like Numan, that make this world a better place. I've heard his new album"Savage" and it has help plug a whole left by Bowie, in my life.

I feel that, more than ever. He was really picked on by the UK music press and they had so much power and influence then, as much as I loved the writing of many of the journalists the whole system was rotten. Managers pulled in favours shamelessly (like Suede's 'best new band in Britain' cover store in the Melody Maker) and Editors made calculated decisions to damage careers (Danny Kelly's vendetta against Morrissey in the NME). And Gary Numan was very unfairly bullied and mocked in that end of the music media, they made it very personal I feel sorry for him.

I finally broke down and bought: Tubeway Army & Gary Numan on iTunes. I bout the original tubeway army album for 2 bux from a cut out bin in the early 80's. it became like one of my favorite albums tho. it was $9.99 on iTunes. besides the original 12 songs there are 13 more live tracks. I am way pleased. I think it would make any gary numan fan happy. I am a bassist and I used to make all my abnd mates check out the original tubeway army. I was never in a new wave band either. the first band I played in was a blues band. then all metal and thrash bands. I just thought it was so well put together. and of course gary numans singing. ; I did tour with a tubeway type act on the same bill as us when I was 16 tho. it was this kid tim he used all synths and sequencers (it was amazing 1984, I still can't figure all that out)!

+gregory clewell I don't buy much stuff off iTunes. I miss that old tape tho. I usually like to buy cd's still. I would have paid $9.99 for the original 12 songs at this point. the live stuff. well sounds real live. it wasn't even recorded off a sound guys board or something. fans will love the stuff tho. to me the live stuff is all a bonus andi would never have heard most of those songs otherwise. still it sounds like when we just recorded shows on a boombox when I was in my bands. kinda neat tho. you can hear the audience and everything. kinda puts ya there. I was 11 years old en it was recorded and didn't even know about tubeway army. even if I did my parents never would have let me fly to England from toms river new jersey and check out the show. ;-)
