I have lived abroad for over 20 years and never lived in a place where the luxury to live and work beyond 3 months was not totally controlled by the host country through, in the beginning, a WORK permit. It was only after employment and paying taxes for 5 years as an American that I was granted a permanent residence permit. That permit is conditional on Good Standing. Break the law or disrupt the host country's gracious invite...and that C permit would go away fast. Why should the US be any different?

I saw one of the buses at the Love's Truck Stop in Dwight on their way to Chicago a few years ago.
