I agree that not having the ability to operate the choke with the paramotor on your back is somewhat of an inconvenience. A modification with a choke cable running alongside the throttle cable is probably the most viable solution, and safer, because you know most pilots will simply resort to starting it on the ground. That was pretty funny. The spectator wanted a picture of the motor, not you Tucker. He didn't know you're an infamous KZbinr.
@southernutahppg743510 күн бұрын
It’s not a problem. You start the motor on the rack or table or ground and let it warmup for 2-3 minutes at idle, with a prop strap, while you setup your glider. That’s when you would apply and release the choke. You then start the motor without the prop strap, on your back when you’re ready to walk out to the glider. It’s warm and will now start easily and won’t cause you to put it on and take it off 5 times trying to get it started when it’s cold. The odds of a full throttle start are also very low because you have just verified it’s in prop operating condition.

I use a micro linear actuator, (Amazon!) and it's optional wireless remote (like a key fob) to operate the oil cooler shutter on my kitplane, when winter flying. In use for several years, no power used when not moving, 1.1 " stroke. The whole weighs just ozs.

I got to check out this exact paramotor in person. I have no experience flying this engine but I sure do like the idea of a 4 stroke paramotor engine. And I can tell you it is a very good looking engine. It looks very well made and is aesthetically pleasing as well. I also like the Fly Products frame. I think whoever gets this paramotor is going to be very happy with it. Thanks for letting us check it out Tucker. 🙂

Torquey! It DOES sound like a DR-Z400! I used to have an S model when they first came out over 20 years ago. Should have MUCH better throttle response than a 2-stroke, especially at small throttle openings. A couple things with a 4-stroke carburetor with a float bowl: The slide is usually vacuum-operated with no direct connection to the throttle. The throttle cable is connected to a butterfly valve - just a round disc in the carb throat on the engine side of the carb. These work really well in that they somewhat compensate for temperature and altitude due to the slide lifting the needle out of the main jet enough to match the amount or density of air coming in. It's no fuel injection, but it's better than a 2-stroke carburetor in that regard.' As just about a lifelong mechanic, my preference is always a 2-stroke - lighter, faster, cheaper, simpler. All BIG wins in my book. When tuned right they can be every bit as reliable as a 4-stroke. But that's just me! Haven't seen you in a while. My job takes up 99% of my free time these days. Ya look good, brother!! Good to see ya! 👍😎👍

I flew UL's for years, all 2 strokes, and when I got my first small 4 stroke powered plane, I didn't miss mixing my fuel and oil at all! Especially when on a XC. They just sound better too, but damn it's hard to beat th epower to weight ratio of a 2 er. I've had a little 4 stroke German made weed wacker for several years, the smallest 4 stroke I've ever seen, and it never fails to start in 1 or 2 pulls, great tech.

Game changer can’t wait to see the first flight 🤘🏼
@sambrown642610 күн бұрын
It's a game changer unless you only have a car, and not a van, truck, or really big SUV, and you need to remove the cage and prop, and lay the thing on its back across the rear seats to transport it to and from the LZ, because if you try to do that with a 4-stroke engine, the oil might get places it shouldn't, like the inside of the cylinder, or past an open/leaky valve and into the exhaust or carburetor, none of which are good. So, whenever I get my first paramotor, it'll be a 2-stroke, not a 4-stroke. Like, I get that I'm probably in the minority here, and that this'll be great for most people, but it's just not a good fit for me personally. That being said, this is still really cool, and I can definitely see this being very popular in the future

Two strokes for life; less moving parts, less things to break, run them a little rich and they last forever. Not to mention the power to weight ratio. The problem with 2 strokes lays between the headset ! I fly 2 stroke ( actually 4 , 2 at the same time) 45 years 60/75 h per year , never had a major trouble ! when even in an official FAA book is the fuel pump wrong mounted !! The engine will fail !! Look at the specs cooling temperature. max 80 C etc. ( Rotax 582) check the EGT if it goes over 1200 F reduce pwr etc. then you will have a lot of fun with your 2 stroke . By the way a Rotax 912 (80) hp has not more thrust then a 582 !!(64hp)

I can't believe that gasoline pumps in USA are allowed to be multi grade fuel....instead of having one dedicated line and dispenser nozzle for each fuel. You may have selected 91 but if someone before you was pumping 82...that's what you will get in your container until all the 82 had been displaced by the 91. You really need to dispense the first half gallon into a seperate container..then continue with the pure 91 in the second container...and the second container is what gets tipped into the flymotor's fuel tank..

Looks like a very clean design implementation. Hopefully that translates out into dependability, and is not just skin deep. I usually find that to be the case, that care in one aspect of design and construction carries through to the other, but it is not a requirement/guarantee. I'm talking about aspects like using a more complex and expensive old school automotive or standard old school motorcycle slide carb, rather than a simpler, less costly butterfly arrangement, those clean castings, nice accessible layouts, taking the care to put oil level viewing ports, etc. Great job on the overview, concise and reasonably complete, perfect for the intent. Shout out to the engine designer(s), especially if the dependability pans out. Nicely done. Love it when engineers CARE about their output. Any more, that is not remotely a given. I'll bet that exhaust note will be a lot more pleasant in the air, than a screaming two stroke. Nice 'Bewitched' type editing on the walking shirt changes, better than theirs, actually. I don't know if it was intentional, but the look on your face after the guy ignored what you said completely, and wanted you to model the thing for pics, was priceless. One thing I saw that would be nice would be a choke actuator on the hand control, maybe with a flip up cover or recess to prevent accidental activation. It would be nice to be able to go through that sequence while on your back, one hoist only, if that is not the case. Maybe you were just verifying for first flight, also a great idea until you gain trust.

Find it strange that it's not fuel injected- which is really standard on 4stroke MX engines of the last decade and would bypass the altitude jetting issues that you might get. I'm also really Interested to know if the hot air 4 strokes create (they run SO much hotter than 2strokes) does anything... like more volatile wake or even just feels hot so close to your back. I know I really feel the heat when I ride 4 strokes vs 2 stroke MX bikes.

Those motor mounts are polyurethane motor mounts and I would imagine the reason they don't use those on the 2 cycle motors is because the 2 cycle vibration is worse than a 4 cycle and polyurethane is more ridgid then a rubber motor mount as far as getting 2 cycle engines to be more dependable ive found that if I add sta-bal fuel treatment to my mixed fuel it makes a huge difference with any issues I have with my 2 cycle or 4 cycle engines
@sambrown642610 күн бұрын
Idk if it's different for paramotors, but those red bushings look like the aftermarket polyurethane bushings you often find in aftermarket upgraded suspension components and engine mounts you can buy for your car. In fact, they may be off-the-shelf automotive polyurethane bushings, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. Just my 2 cents from a car guy who wants to get a paramotor at some point, once I finally move out of my parents' house, at least

Honestly? My best guess is that they're some super-secret "Black project" the US military is working on, and they're just doing some stateside testing before they're sent into combat, and that the CIA isn't lying about not knowing what's going, but that the military genuinely hasn't told them anything, because they don't need to know, and the fewer people who do know, the better. This wouldn't even be the first time something like this has happened. It happened with the B-2 Spirit, it happened with the F-117 Nighthawk, it happened with the B-1 Lancer, it happened with the SR-71 Blackbird, but the CIA might have been in on that last one, I'm not sure. But that's just my best guess, I could be totally wrong, but the fact that people from the White House have said that they're not a threat is certainly something to keep in mind.
