it's hysterical how much love san diego gets here in southern az. i was born and raised not too far from the beaches in orange county, and absolutely no one talks about SD there.

I was riding the Loop on memorial day weekend. I was stopping by every gas station/convenience store every chance I could get to get some Gatorade and water. I started my ride about 8 am but by the time noon came around, there was no one on the trails because the temp hit 104. I finished my ride, went back to the hotel, took a cold shower and ate my dinner. I had the best sleep ever that night.

Take a damp or wet towel and wrap it around the back of the neck. When it gets dry wet the towel again and repeat the steps as needed.

Would love to learn more about how people in Tucson manage their dogs in the heat and with the wild critters that are there.
@TucsonArizona
@TucsonArizona 3 жыл бұрын
GREAT question! A lot of animals (dogs/cats) are indoors a lot in the summer, and doggie doors are definitely popular, and it’s important to have a lot of shade in the yards. It’s also important to have a big wall around your property preferably brick to keep the critters out and keep them away from pets. I often see dogs wearing little “booties” on their feet during the summer months. There are also snake safety classes that are offered here for dogs (and they are quite effective!)
@peldridge2627
@peldridge2627 3 жыл бұрын
@@TucsonArizona interesting comment about the wall. I see many homes with cinderblock walls, but looking out of windows at a cinderblock wall would not be very nice. How low/tall should a solid wall be to keep out "critters"? I'm assuming rattlesnakes.
@TucsonArizona
@TucsonArizona 3 жыл бұрын
I see walls, fences, and gates of all shapes and sizes around here, but in my opinion the best thing to keep out critters is brick wall, and it will keep out coyotes, Javelina‘s, and most snakes, although if it’s low enough the bobcats can still get in depending on where you live. The wall around my house is at least 5 feet tall and bobcats still get in from time to time… We also get snakes but I’ve never seen a rattlesnake in my backyard thank goodness… nothing stops the pack rats 😫

I grew up in El Paso and a swamp cooler is fine if the air is moving. We did have a pool though. I'm sure AC is better but we just didn't have it back then. The cars had vent windows to push a breeze into the car which worked well if the car was moving
@TucsonArizona
@TucsonArizona Жыл бұрын
I agree, I really like swamp coolers because they are so much less expensive to run than air conditioning units. The only time they don’t work great is when it’s humid. And that doesn’t happen often in Tucson, except for during our monsoon seasons. Otherwise they’re awesome.

We had the swamp cooler on top of the house. And yes ,our house was east, west facing . And a 40 ft ponderosa pine shaded the house during the later part of the day. Looked at this area yesterday on Google and was able to zoom in and, well there's a jack in the box and parking lot where we used to live. And a huge electronics store across the street!! Wow how things have changed!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, have a wonderful day!!!

Because of the sun, I always wear a wide brimmed straw hat in the summer. The fashion today for cowboy hats is to turn up the brim on the sides, but I keep mine flat. Not only does it do better at protecting my ears and neck from the sun, it is also, I think, a more traditional look.

Make plans to do any yard work from about am to 10am to avoid the heat, honestly if the work is quiet I would start earlier. I would never leave out my dogs all summer in the desert, that constant heat is wearing on over all health. Especially with small dogs, don't count on your walls to keep out coyotes, I've had friends lose small dogs to predators who easily jumped the six foot wall, and one neighbor saw a coyote balancing itself on a metal fence with ease. Shocking but true! And coyotes are mainly out at night, but I have also seen them casually trotting down my street at one pm in the afternoon. For pack rats - if you had a car or RV in storage in your yard--in RV parks here we line solar string lights around the bottom of the RV outside-supposedly the rats wont cross the strip of light. Also my RV dealer suggested I get plastic containers poked with holes and shred Irish Spring soap and place the containers in high risk areas such as the sewer and electric inlet areas. If your car is safe in a garage you can open the engine hood, they look for concealed spaces to nest, and will not be attracted to the engine area if open.

For the next 10 days, the weather report shows that our lows will be between 67-71 degrees, which means that usually when we wake up that’s what it’s going to be. But there have been some summers where we were having a heat wave where the lows were around 80 degrees, which was definitely not fun! 😩 it’s usually not too bad to do outdoor things like walking or gardening first thing in the morning and in the evening, at dawn and dusk. In the heat of the summer I usually recommend people stay indoors from 10 AM to 5 PM or at least stay in the shade outside. There’s always a breeze in Tucson, and it’s rarely humid, so if you’re in the shade and there is a breeze, it’s usually not too bad. Thanks for the view and comment!
