Hello, I’ve been wondering for a while… are clowns as we know them basically fashioned after historic royal and noble women? Could clowns be a sort of cross dressing in more modern history? White face, red lips, wide fluffy cuff around the neck, short yet puffy curly red hair… I could be describing Queen Elizabeth I or I could be describing a traditional clown….

Elizabeth I died of an unidentified illness. Maybe the principal, or a contributory, cause was heavy metals poisoning from her cosmetics, they have a cumulative and often, fatal effect, particularly if heavy metal-containing products were heated. The vapors of toxic metals are a very direct route to poisoning, through the lungs.

What's up with the model trying to act all sexy and caressing her face. It's not only absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary, it's demeaning.

Thank you! I too failed to see how a very horny girl, staring into the camera, while cars drove by behind her, illustrated Tudor cosmetics.

Fantastic video. Many thanks. Sad to think that such shallow beauty standards date as far back as the Tudors, even further. Shocking how we still haven't evolved. Women today risk their lives with cosmetic surgeries, and walk around with lips so plump I honestly don't know how they can talk properly.

The lead based foundation, heaven help us. And at some point a little arsenic for the complexion.

As mentioned, the red dye for lips was prepared from cochineal. Cochineal (Dactylopus coccus) is an insect in the Dactylopiidae family, and it is native to tropical and subtropical South America, Mexico and the Southwest of the US where it lives on cactus. The carmine dye prepared from this insect was a major export in the 16th century.

Your pronunciation is peculiar. I eventually figured out that “all” means “oil”.

Such an interesting topic and fabulously done video!... but I'm very sorry I could NOT stop laughing until I hurt, at the woman dancing in the beginning 🤣🤣🤣 It made that part of the video seem like a comedy

I once read that Elizabeth 1st's make up was quite built up and thick by the time of her death.

It is indeed odd how society viewed beauty thru the ages, isn't it? Don't forget the lead that was mixed into Tudor makeup. That was very poisonous and lethal! The Tudors had naturally red hair.

I know right? Was she trying to be sexy? Was that necessary? I feel it was inappropriate and demeaning not only to the subject but to the viewer and the model. The narrator sounds bored as hell.

What's with the swarthy model when you said white face with red cheeks and lips were signs of beauty? I hate it when people apologize for their culture.

I have read over the years that bathing during this era was believed to cause the plague, so baths were almost non-existent, hence the desire and demand for perfumes. I also read that when Elizabeth I died, she had almost 2+ inches of powder makeup on her face. I’m surprised they didn’t use more eye makeup, but I guess complexion and cheek color were more important than emphasis on the eyes.

Hi I was going to say imagine if lady Jane grey was never killed she looked after her health and had children and had a nice life with Gilford then if she was still alive in 1603 what would England have been like if she became queen in 1603 and what would her reaction be hearing she is queen and Elizabeth death I would love to know your thoughts and opinions thanks

I'm surprised that women back then in that society embraced makeup. I would figure that it would be an affront to their religion as the make up says that God didn't give me a good face, so I'm going to attempt to make my face better than what he gave.
