That engine sound is great. Thank you ever so much for not playing stupid music. If I had a yacht built, I would instruct the yard not to make it too quiet.

Are tugs a service the harbor provides or can folks own their own tugs?
@BenjaminEsposti8 жыл бұрын
+Motherbrain Jr I don't see why you could own your own tugboat. Like, I'm sure some people have old tugs that they have restored into working condition, but I'm guessing that you need some license and training to be a professional tug operator.
@m0ther_bra1ned128 жыл бұрын
Benjamin Esposti Folks might be able to co-own a tugboat to make a living, but no I would imagine its unlikely someone could afford to own and maintain a tug, at least somebody that had to use it to make a living... :-/
@iloveRUSSIAAA8 жыл бұрын
There are private towing companies that operate them, some provide assistance like this, others might be employed by marine construction companies for towing dredge tenders and equipment barges, maybe they use their tugs specifically for mated barges... Stuff like that. So yes there are very many privately held tugs in the world that get actual use. Its definitely not something that is rare.

Great vid, nice position for the camera! My father used to skipper conventional single screw tugs and later Japanese Z-drive tugs at Milford Haven UK. Out of curiosity which shipyard builds the tugs you work on?

Helidan, a question asked 4 yrs ago and still no answer?! 😡
@darrenhillman83964 жыл бұрын
Antwerp Port Authority has x19 tugs presently, the newest being Number 20, 21 and 22 (Antwerp inner harbour tugs are numbered, not named.). These tugs were fitted out and finished by local yard SKB NV, but the hulls were built at the Usti yard in the Czech Republic. The earlier tugs were in all likelihood built by the same yard.

@keessturm28049 жыл бұрын
Doesn't she need a stern tug to exit the lock? or is the outside harbortowage done by an other company? And does that include the "linker oever"?
@bas69838 жыл бұрын
Kees Sturm Yes, river is being done by the private tugs. (Fairplay, Smit, URS, and Multraship" limker oever is the same. River and into Kalloo/deurganckdock bijnriver tugs and at linkeroever bij Antwerp stad towage.

So how do tugboat operators get paid? Do you bill the port who in turn bills the ship owner?
@ShippingHarbors9 жыл бұрын
+T Hud I work for a tug-company and they pay me each month ;) They also bill the shipping company from the assisted vessels, but i don't know any numbers from those bills ;)

I was wondering how a Voith-Scheider is to drive? Could anyone used to a twin engine boat get to grips with it after a little bit of practice or is it very different?
@ShippingHarbors8 жыл бұрын

I love your videos! Many thanks for posting them. So what caused the stern line to snap like that? It looked like the crewman on the Altair did something that triggered it. Also, how do you isolate the camera from vibration? Regards from Stanton, NJ, USA.
@ShippingHarbors9 жыл бұрын
bx2200 Thanks for the compliments :) The sternline didn't snap, it only moved a bit under tension. The camera is mounted with a dual suctioncup to the window of the tug combined with a rode stereo videomic pro.

Is that turbos I hear, if so then they are loud!
@ShippingHarbors9 жыл бұрын
Correct! Even though they are located in the engine room, they can still be heard,rather good. Some of our tugs have the air intake on the deck, and those turbo's are much louder. There are some movies from those also on this channel.

Is it common for harbor tugs to carry water monitors for fire fighting? Or is it an optional thing. Does your tug carry a separate motor/pump for this purpose?
@ShippingHarbors9 жыл бұрын
Andrew Lulling The tug in the video does not have watermonitors, but it is quite common that tugs have some kind of fire fighting equipment on board.
@Coolkeys20099 жыл бұрын
How does the main towing winch work? When the cable is being reeled in or out is this done with a control or is there a setting that can detect when some more needs to be fed out ie. when some one is pulling on it?
@ShippingHarbors9 жыл бұрын
Coolkeys2009 It's done manually from inside the wheelhouse by the engineer.
@Coolkeys20099 жыл бұрын
Coolkeys2009 Also what signals are passed between the tug and the container ship so you know what assistance you need to give?
@Coolkeys20099 жыл бұрын
Shipping/Harbors It seems to offer very fine control and great speed range considering how much force goes through it. Very responsible job reel in the line too early and somebody could be injured.
@ShippingHarbors9 жыл бұрын
Coolkeys2009 Yeah it's pretty sensitive, and the speed is also adjustable. If you reel in to early there is indeed a chance you reel a person with it, and that it not very good with that kind of force.

How much do these assists cost?
@ShippingHarbors9 жыл бұрын
Arthur Bradley That is an answer i can't give you. That part is handled by the administration department. It depends on the distance/size/DWT, etc... of the assisted ship. Roughly between 1500 and 3500 euro/tug i think....not sure of that.
