Thank you very much for sharing this splendid, very interesting and inspiring, and so beautiful video, Daniel 😍 Here in the South of Finland it is currently a grey winter day, with ice and snow. Those vibrant colours of your piece of art brought so much happiness. I did some silk painting more than a decade ago. Seeing all this beauty in your video, I'll start my hobby again. Hi there Daniel, I wanted to touch base because I finished my batik Kaftan workshop today, and experienced something I need your expertise on. The kaftan was Rayon. We used Batik EZ resist. I tub dyed the kaftan after the resist dried. Once I rinsed the kaftan, the resist did not penetrate the fabric and the stamped image disappeared. Any idea what could have happened? BTW, I'm Jewish too.
@DanielJeanBaptiste7 жыл бұрын
Hi Linde, I am sorry to say but I am unable to help you as I only specialize in working G&S cold water based wax resist and water-based silk paints using small sumi bamboo brushes. I have not worked with dye for over a decade and I am not familiar with Batik EZ resist. Might I suggest this Facebook group facebook.com/groups/silkpainters/?ref=bookmarks, they may be able to give you a solution.

Hi, which colors do you use to paint? how do you fix those colors? what material you use to fix them? Thanks, is very beautiful what you do.

I use water based silk paints, some of the brands are Setasilk, Dye na Flow, and G&S Dye silk colours. All these paints cure once the painting is dry.

Ey thanks so much. So is possible to wash the material after working? The color does not go. I study batik in indonesia. I see you have a canting made out of plastic? You made it yourselve? It looks easier to make the wax lines with that. Thanks so much is so beautiful what you do .
@DanielJeanBaptiste8 жыл бұрын
The material can be washed but it will appear duller unless the washed silk is mounted and bonded onto a stretched canvas with an artist polymer to show bright colours again. I do not was my pieces, they are framed behind glass. Yes I have developed an acetate resist applicator, very easy to use.
@tatydesignstudio45756 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel do you ever iron steam or use any fixative on your art can you please advise I wanted to make a scarf and came out beautiful bright colors after ironing and washing the gold Gutta is choppy and red Dynaflow is a pale thank you
@DanielJeanBaptiste6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tatyana, I work with Pebeo seta Silk paints which cure upon drying. I only use silk paints for creating paintings to be framed and not for apparel. I would recommend silk dye for the production of scarfs, silk paints look less bright after washing because the paint sits on the surface of the fiber and washing shrinks the textile changing the appearance of the color as well silk paints do not feel soft to the touch. So use dye instead.
@tatydesignstudio45756 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel thank you so much for your valuable advise 🌷
@jagjitkaur19566 жыл бұрын
Sir,your paintings are amazing and you have your own signature style.As advised by you I saw your video but could not gather what mixture you apply on silk before applying colours.The voice in that particular video was not clear.is the application half water and half diluent or half water hlf alcohol.Please also explain the difference between diluent and medium. I aadded half medium hlf water to paint on silk but the fabcric became stiffer and the effect looked like that of the fabric paint or say acrylic paint.where did i go wrong?please advise.
@DanielJeanBaptiste6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great feedback. The mixture is half water and half diluent www.gsdye.com/product717.html. If you want a soft touch finish you need to use silk dye instead of paints. I use silk paints for framable art.

are you self taught? or did someone teach you? I see you use Wax for your lines, so nice they seem to be taught on the silk not to spread to other colours.

I am a self-taught artist, I was introduced to silk painting in 1981 when I worked at Display Arts of Toronto and produced commercial silk painted backdrops and decor banners. The technique was introduced to me by artist Betty Nelson Daniel but I started doing my own research and testing to evolve into a unique silk artist.

I could understand why you do not steam them. With steaming the colors bleed and blend to form a look of non professionalism.. and that way when you don't steam them they are in a picture perfect behind glass.. so lovely.
@DanielJeanBaptiste7 жыл бұрын
Silk paints, unlike dye do not need to be steamed, they are polymer based pigments that cure upon drying.

How are the pencil marks not covered by gutta removed?
@DanielJeanBaptiste7 жыл бұрын
I do not draw with pencil onto the silk. The silk is sitting directly bonded to the paper over a marker drawing, so I only apply gutta.
@ClassyGeek7 жыл бұрын
ahh - and it does not stick to the paper underneath?
@DanielJeanBaptiste7 жыл бұрын
It does not stick because I use bleached Kraft paper and this is a wax water- based resist. Other water-based brands conatin starch and do end up sticking.
