You lost a week of time, But you learned more about your boat and engine :) and if it works, mission success. If it doesn't last, you still learned stuff

The biggest benefit from the engine rebuild is your confidence. You understand the engine and have the knowledge to diagnose and repair it. Confidence is a great thing when you are sailing.

My first career was a marine engineer on submarines before moving into a corporate career. When I retired my first job was to rebuild the engine in my boat. I had the means to simply buy a new one, but wanted the satisfaction of doing it myself. Despite having rebuilt dozens of engines i was still apprehensive and it wasn't it was running sweet that i finally relaxed, so i can appreciate where you were coming from. Beyond the satisfaction is the knowledge you gain from doing the work yourself. BTW, the job you did was first class and i was impressed how clean you were able to maintain all the components as well as your improvisation with the piston rings compression tool. Well done and enjoy many years of sailing.

Bravo! I’m a mechanic and have rebuilt a lot of engines and I’m impressed that someone that has never done it before using block of wood as a hammer and basic hand tools did and on a boat that was still in water is impressive. The fact that it runs great is like fire works to me. Congrats🎉

It's always worth it doing things yourself because you never know when you may have to do it yourself to save your and yours when you're out somewhere and a pro isn't around. Great job. Learning is huge IMO. Well done. My dad always taught me one thing. You can always take it to the pro so why not try it yourself first. It's served me well my entire life. Again well done.

Billy, you don't have a 30 year old engine, you have a 30 year old block and head casting with all new internal wear parts. This is probably better than a brand new engine because as I've said before the block you have is seasoned and actually better than new. It's nice to see Sierra back and it looked like Jetty was happy to see here too. Keep the good stuff coming and stay safe, it's going to be a long strange trip through this Covid-19 thing.

Great job on that engine and it's like they say "The Devil's in the details" I'm glad that it turned out to be the injectors and not something that was deeper in the engine. It would have sucked if you had to pull the engine back out and tear it back down again for something like a clip or spring. Thank you for another great video and I wish the three of you very happy sailing

Get your injector pump recalibrated, it'll make a difference usually at high revs their performance drops off with age/wear.
@melee401
@melee401 4 жыл бұрын
Leaky injectors can dilute the lube oil viscosity and do other nasty things. That is why you should have an electric fuel shut off (manual works too with another item on the engine start up/ shut down valve to insure the fuel to the engine is totally shut off when the engine is not running). You have a high pressure pump that appears to be still doing fine. Injectors can run 1000 USD a pop. 4 cylinders X 1000 USD is considerable. Great gift those injectors. Nobody needs to find fuel was siphoning from the tank, through the injectors only to run your crank case oil over the top and into the bilge. the problem of course is that then you need a bypass so that if the electric fuel cut off valve fails in the closed position, you can bypass it. St. Croix has a cruise ship a week pulling in. THOUSANDS of passengers turn Fredericksted into a fleece fest. Nice anchorage there though as long as the wind and seas are not coming from the south. Had it not been for the gift, you would have only "saved" 1000 USD, not 5000. But,,,you still have ANOTHER engine that will likely follow suit real soon. Hopefully somebody will toss you a set of injectors for that one as well. But, you can get the old injectors from your recent rebuild rebuilt for a few thousand USD. If I were you I would do exactly that, get those old injectors rebuilt for the next OH of that other engine and pack em away.
