Rebuilding Yanmar Diesel from Sunk Boat

We take a step back in time to finish the engine rebuild series, where I finish rebuilding the head and top end of my Yanmar 3Y30 diesel engine from my hurricane damaged Antares 44 catamaran that was damaged by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas.
It's a small makeover on the engine as I show you the process I go through to get the engine running again. It's always nice to know there is hope for an engine if your sailboat sinks.

Several yrs back saw an interesting video by diesel mechanic on DIY cleaning injectors. Get a tire rubber valve stem with cap. Remove the valve inside. Drill a small hole through top of cap. Using the small red straw that comes with can of carb cleaner, heat end of straw, without closing off the hole (tricky part) then quicky thread the straw thru the hole in end of cap so that melted end forms seal with cap, and 3-4" of red straw is sticking out of top of cap. Cap is screwed on to rubber valve stem and wide part of rubber valve stem is pushed on to the inlet end of the injector. Red straw is attached to carb cleaner nozzle and holding things tightly, spray carb cleaner- it will clean out the injector (held in vice our your hand) and its nozzle. If the injector needs 12v dc power to open, use a 9v battery or 12v power source with wires and alligator clips to power the injector. Spray until the injector's spray pattern is correct.

The Quartermaster* First time comment. Great video! In 1996, I purchased a Beneteau 40 C/C sailboat with a Yanmar4jh2e diesels. Had the boat 25 years, put on 5,000 plus hours without any problems! Changed the Rotella 15/40 oil and filter ever 100 hours, transmission fluid every other oil change, changed the Raycor 500 fuel filter every 100 hours, and the yanmar fuel filter every other oil change. Kept the engine room spotless, and the breather filter changed when visually needed. Replaced injectiors 3 times, starter once, plus normal wear and tear parts. Result, 54,000 nautical miles and 5,000 plus hours of perfect trouble-free service! Yanmars are without question the most dependable and best running diesels you can buy!

One should not reuse a headgasket, but you can. BMW 318i with an M40 motor, being an apprentice with no money and a thrown timing belt. I replaced 4 valves and used Indian Head Shelac on both sides of the headgasket. Worked great untill it needed to come off. That shelac really sticks everything together. I must say that the original headgasket came off in one piece and left no chunks behind

Gday Bryan, Great job on the engines! Marinas are notorious for getting moisture in their fuel. I’d recommend taking plenty of filters with you and having a drainable/visible water catching reservoir on the bottom of the fuel filters and checking them often. Also an accessible drain on the bottom of the fuel tanks. Just makes life easier. Seeing you in front of the log fire reminds me I’ve got to get out and get some wood in. Getting colder down here now. Have a great Summer Bryan. Wishing you fair seas and following winds in all aspects of your life mate 👍👍🍻

Have you considered upgrading the engines? I wonder how much you'd get selling those once re-built. Our 44ft Lagoon 440 has 57hp (4JH57) Yanmars and we can easily motor at 6.5/7kts on a single engine burning 1.1-1.5 gal/hr depending on rpm. 30hp on a 44ft catamaran is a bit underpowered from what I've seen. Antares no longer offers their boats with anything less than 40hp engines. Obviously we all want to sail as much as possible and avoid using engines, but the extra HP helps a ton. We've had to power through massive currents while passing between channels. It's nice to know that I can get by on a single engine if I had issues. I don't think our boat could have powered through those kind of channels with just a single 30hp. Keep up the good work. My boat has some bulkhead issues that I've been grinding out and re-tabbing over the past year. I'm also a software engineer who loves projects! But watching your videos makes me feel like my fiberglass work is not too bad! haha

Great work! Did you put new copper crush washers under the injectors? I know VW and Mercedes diesels are really sensitive to that. Remove an injector, new washer on re install. Or you might have leaks! I don’t know if Yanmar’s are the same. I should know. I own 2 of them!
