he white-tailed tropicbird (Phaethon lepturus) is a tropicbird. It is the smallest of three closely related seabirds of the tropical oceans and smallest member of the order Phaethontiformes. It is found in the tropical Atlantic, western Pacific and Indian Oceans. It also breeds on some Caribbean islands, and a few pairs have started nesting recently on Little Tobago, joining the red-billed tropicbird colony. In addition to the tropical Atlantic, it nests as far north as Bermuda, where it is locally called a "longtail".[2]

@@Tulasendlesssummer Yes those are White-tailed Tropicbirds! To see one the U.S. it is a rare treat, we do get them very rarely but far from shore. The birds you saw are nesting in the rock crevices. On Bermuda they compete with the very rare Bermuda Petrel for nesting cavities. Artificial nest cavities were made in Bermuda so that only a Bermuda Petrels can enter and nest. The White-tailed Tropicbird has that long tail so the artificial nest cavities aren't suitable for them to nest there. The Bermuda Petrel can nest in those artificial cavities which is a good thing. The petrels were almost extinct but have now come back thanks to the artificial nest cavities. It is still a very, very rare bird. White-tailed Tropicbirds are still not too common in many areas where they are found. The biggest threat to Island birds all over the world are introduced rats, cats and feral hogs. You guys are very luck to have seen those birds!

Thanks for giving our family awesome, adventurous, educational, family friendly videos to watch together at bedtime! Two of the girls (6 and 7) start asking at supper which "boat video" they can watch before bed. Billy is a "good boat driver who can't cook" lol. Jetty is "awesome, and spoiled" and Sierra is their favorite, the "underwater expert." Thank you for being an amazing role model for my girls and helping feed their learning about marine life. @jansmith99225 жыл бұрын
The birds are trying to lure you away from their nest with eggs/babies. I see mocking birds do this all the time in the spring, when a black bird gets close to their nest. The black birds will steal the mocking birds eggs to drive the mocking birds out of “their territory”. The Mocking birds are like little fighter jets diving & close turning on the black birds and they triumph in moving the black birds away from their nets & territory. These birds think you will take their babies. Beautiful island. Great job carving a lucky life out for the three of you.
