The day starts well as we wake up to a beautiful view! However, while attempting to move the boat to a marina we realize our starboard engine has DIED and docking with one engine and the strong trade winds blowing is a little stressful! We officially clear customs and are ready to explore Grenada and are excited to spend hurricane season here.

Theres a pretty big chance your crank case vent is clogged and thus causing pressure to build up in the crank case/oil pan.

You have no tensioning pulleys for the belt on the autopilot. They help by tightening the slack part of the belt, and when the direction changes, they then shift to tighten the other side. It is a simple system to rig up--simple rollers on a sliding plate..

All engine have some form off cylinder blow by, but usually only a small amount. To stop pressure from building up there is a pressure release valve ( a PVC ), that vents into the air intake to ensure the vapours don’t contaminate the environment. That’s a simple and cheap check before looking for other more expensive solutions. Great video as always guys. I thoroughly enjoy you work.

That oil issue sounds like "blow by" which is exactly what you described. But do take a look around for any kind of vents that may be plugged or pinched hoses. I had a 210 Cummins that I took off the road because half of age but mostly because it would spew oil out and cause gaskets to fail. It wasn't until i took some parts off for another truck and found a pinched hose that caused the issue all along.

Looking at your Autopilot. Bandsaw tires and adjustable belts may be a possible solution. Look on Loews harbor freight, or amazon and you can find them. Adjustable belts allow you to take links out. These belts are supposed to be resistant to water, salt and harsh conditions. Good luck with engine.

Sierra & Billy: taking my "huge fan" hat off and putting my "father & grandfather" hat on, and for you to glean sincerity & concern from me, I spend a lot of time reading newspapers. Stories about climate change caused by global warming and the effect warming will have upon rising sea levels , how "lax regulation, austerity, and climate change threaten to be Puerto Rico's next big crisis in water", and hearing about your upcoming projects and seeing your recent boat tour episode, it is my best recommendation to place the installation of a water maker as a very high priority. It is entirely up to you, but potable water is a necessity. Locked water outlets onshore is a real bummer. Rant over, "huge fan hat" back on. 11/23/19 Happy Thanksgiving to you, Jetty, and to everyone.:¬) Webhead USA

There were two of those “cool boats” with the plumb bow close to my slip in Lauderdale and they were megayacht toy haulers! You have best bird book for the West Indies! The first one that came out was Birds of the West Indies by "James Bond", yes, the "Real James Bond". James Bond was the Curator of Birds at the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia PA. His book was an excellent field guide for the West Indies region. It took many years for another guide to come out. A Guide To The Birds of the West Indies by Herbert Raffaele, James Wiley, Orlando Garrido, Allan Keith and Janis Raffaele. The one you guys have is the newest one first published in 1998. That is probably my most favorite bird book of all time. I've been fortunate to have birded all of the West Indies and have used the guide you both have to I.D. birds. Ian Fleming who wrote the James Bond books that the movies came from, was visiting Jamaica many years ago. This was I think in the late 1940's he saw the book Birds of the West Indies by James Bond on a friends coffee table. He saw the name James Bond and thought that it was such a cool name, that he used that name for the character in his books! All of those West Indies Island have endemic bird species found no where else in the world. You should look for these on your visits there.

If you will take a dry bar of soap and rub it on the auto pilot belt really well, it will grip a lot better. It's not a fix but it will work for a day or so at a time. At least it will be a short term fix.

You guys prolly have the engine sorted by now, but perhaps your crankcase breather/vent is clogged. If clogged pressure can't escape by the normal route so will often release up the dipstick hole instead. Just a thought. :) So cool seeing Grenada! Wow, the landscape is gorgeous. Now you have me wanting to go just so I can smell the tropical flowers. We talk a lot about making it all the way down there someday. Looking forward to seeing more of your Grenada adventures.

When a diesel has oil blow by: "Diesels do not produce sufficient vacuum for a PCV system. They use only a crankcase breather which is vented to the filtered side of the intake ducting. The engine can "breathe" both in and out via the breather cap. The round black thing on the TDI valve cover is a breather cap." This is cleanable. If not your problem it is still handy to know yet another thing that can go wrong with marine engines.

You maybe right! And definitely worth checking, I’m sorta thinking more a broken piston, Either way you are correct a huge amount of crankcase pressure, would love to hear it running! Hhhmm. If you can check the compression and do a leak down test that would diagnose if it's a ring problem. I'm leaning more toward too much crankcase pressure from some other reason than ring blow-by. Your crankcase ventilation tube might be blocked if you have one. Usually there is a little soft filter on the end or pcv valve though they are more often on gas engines.....could be rings too..exhaust restriction causing blowby...try taking the oil filler cap off and running the engine....of course you've probably already fixed it.

Everything is breaking because you brought bananas on your boat. Throw them overboard.

Slipping auto pilot, bar soap from the shower wiped on the rubber contact surface might help. Works on alternator, etc belts.

So you probably already fixed the engine, but what you describe is “blow by”. All diesels have it because they have higher compression than gas engines. Some of the gasses will always slip between the piston and the cylinder. If you take the oil fill cap off while the engine is running and there is enough blow by coming out that it can pop the cap off when you just set it on top without screwing it on, then your engine is too worn out and needs a rebuild. The crank case breather is just for normal blow by.
