The violin music at 17:35 and Hallelujah Chorus at 21:30 was a genius move. Made me LOL haha!! I'm a big fan of Dave Canterbury so I've seen him do this with tulip poplar, and am well aware of his affinity towards it, and justifiably so. Jon Townsend of Jas. Townsend and Son (Townsends) seems to be a fan as well of this particular tree. BTW you have the best salute on KZbin. Perfect 45 deg angle and the middle finger touches the eyebrow in the exact right spot. A thing of beauty, pard. Outstanding.

Did the intermediate class this year at the Pathfinder school and CPL and Josh were two of the several instructors there. I highly recommend the school and all of their instructors to anyone wanting to learn and expand their knowledge. Top notch operation from top to bottom there. Josh and CPL had several tips and tricks that helped me be successful with bow drill.

Not exaggerating, Ive seen probably 50 of these videos, and they are all basically the same. But this one helps you to identify the proper kind of wood, how to process that wood, and how to tie off your bow drill correctly. It isnt rushed and is the most true to life video Ive found. Your videos are always spot on and this one is no exception, an idea for an upgrade to your knife. In the handle put a small divot in the handle and inlay a small piece of concave metal to act as the hand piece for the bow drill. Like you said, there are ways to increase your chances to be successful, just a thought. :-)

Thanks for the info I live in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and am a disabled veteran and love to teach the kids things to use when in the woods since it’s harder for me to get out like I used to but this way I know when they go out hunting I’m confident that they are ok and if they get into a situation where they have to spend the night they will be ok. I started with my son when he was 6 and by 7 if something would happen to me he could make a shelter and start a fire with a lighter and even drive out of the woods to get help. Now that he is 19 he teaches his friends that live in town and will only go in the woods with him. Living here in my opinion parents should teach there kids how to survive in the woods since most of the area is very rural and wooded and teaching them survival for summer and winter is important.

As I near 60, it would be more taxing, but the skills remain... I recently did a 15 day suburban challenge, where I only ate resources I foraged, hunted, fished or trapped here in Gurnee, a northern suburb of Chicago... I GAINED three pounds due to all the wild berries, fish and small game I consumed. Easy to do without competition for resources..

Great video.. in Eastern Texas, Oklahoma we have a poplar tree that in the spring has a “cotton” like flower and when it blooms... EVERYONE gets poplar fever.... runny nose, swelling in eyes, etc. great way to locate this type of tree. Great stuff this video.. thanks for posting this video!

When I was in the desert, the number one go-to fire material was Cheat Grass. It would take a flintsteel spark. It will also catch fire from contact with a catalytic converter on truck exhaust.

I’ve been practicing the bow drill over the past couple of days now, and while I’ve come closer to getting it to work these past couple of days than I ever have, part of me was getting soured to the idea of it. I have tried to make bow drill fire from Tulip Poplar from scratch but never could get an ember, I need to start practicing again. I have a PF knife kit that I've had for over a year and still haven't put it together but need to soon. Great video and tips, thanks for sharing.

I have seen many of these videos and have referred people to them, yours will now be the one that I refer people to. There are a couple of questions that I get asked by those, that view these videos, that have never used primative fire starting methods, that no one ever covers in their videos: #1) Do you have to make a new board for each use? I let them know that once a notch is used up, just make new ones until the board is used up. #2) What do you catch the ember on? I tell them that anything will do ( bark, flat rock, ect). I just thought that I would pass this along for future reference. As usual another excellent video. Thanks.

Superb as always. Request: On future bow-drill video, can you include a close up of the notch as it fills with dust then heats to ember? Maybe a picture-in-picture while you fiddle?
