This is a video on how Tullow Oil in Kenya is planning and working towards delivering first oil into the market. It is a project oil in Kenya status update on how Tullow Oil and it's partners are developing the crude oil exploration facilities, early oil pilot scheme, full field development, adoption of the factory-drilling approach and use of the Lokichar-Lamu corridor as the route for the 18-inch crude oil pipeline for export. Integrated central processing facility (CPF) is spread over 433 hectares and host a lot of support infrastructure. Given that the Kenyan oil is waxy, it means the crude oil pipeline will be heated all the way from Turkana to Lamu, before being connected to the export facilities at the Lamu port.

This would be great, but I ma not sure it would happen under President Ruto's government. The reason am not as optimistic is because the current government seems to be interested in climate change activism, and is not keen to promote oil or gas exploration. For some of these projects to proceed smoothly, you need to have leaders in the country with an ability to see the potential of the project, and also create an enabling environment for upstream oil and gas investments. At the moment, I am not so sure about Kenya's ability to attract investors in the upstream oil and gas sector

Its taking century for people of Kenya to directly benefit from it ..Yet billions of money are unaccountable
@upstreamstory
@upstreamstory 3 күн бұрын
You are right. It is taking long, but it is also worth noting that the exploration and production phase of an oil and gas project takes long. There is a lot that needs to be done before commercial oil or gas production starts. On unaccountable billions, what are you referring to? If you mean the money spent on exploration by Tullow Oil, that will be audited before the final investment decision is made.

@upstreamstory

The oil demand that is replaced by EVs in the world is a very small percentage...it is a drop in the ocean when you consider global demand for the oil and gas resources. So I do not think EV is a threat to the oil and gas sector For Kenya and other African nations, we actually need to develop our oil and gas resources and use them to diversify our economies.

Kenyan Leaders are there to make Kenyans poor and take credit for what they have never done!! I think also we don't really need this project if its not benefiting us as a country instead benefiting the Oil and Gas Companies. Incase we discover more oil and build our own refinery that would make sense to Kenyans

I agree with you on the lack of visionary leadership when it comes to oil and gas industry in Kenya However, I disagree with you on the idea that we should do away with this project. Exploration of oil and gas in Kenya has been ongoing since 1950s, and should continue, not just for us, but for future generation. The oil in Turkana might not benefit you or anyone alive today in Kenya, but it will benefit your grandchild or great grand children So, the key should be putting in place measures that will ensure the revenues generated from the oil and gas in Kenya is spent in the right way. We can borrow ideas from Norway who have done a very good job with their sovereign wealth fund.

When will this dance yields tangible results to mwananchi wa kenya?
@upstreamstory
@upstreamstory Күн бұрын
The honest answer is no one has a definite day or time when that will happen...and this is because the process is not as easy as it seems to many There are a lot of moving parts, the back and forth negotiations on terms, and how revenues will be shared among the investors and the government etc However, at this stage, there are conversations and discussions about the proposed development plan and that will take a while... After that, there shall be the final investment decision, which will mark the start of the developments to help investors do commercial production. Depending on how fast these processes are done and the availability of capital or money to undertake the project, it could happen sooner or take another 5 to 10 years.

There is oil in Turkana, and production will happen once everything is cleared by the government and the investors make a final investment decision. However, I understand why you might be pessimistic about it...

It would have been preferable to first build a refinery in Kenya before exportting the oil. The economic benefits of the refined oil - from refined fuel to chemicals to medicines - would improve the country faster than exporting the unrefined petroleum and having tolater impirt the products. The move in the UK fin Scotland forming a party to break away from the UK and become an imdependent political entity is a direct consequence of the oil drilled off the shores of Scotland being exported to the USA because the US could pay $4.50 a barrel and Scotland only 50 cents. The people of Scotlamd are thus considered unworthy of benefiting off the resources of their land in favour of the profits of a business person. The oil in Kenya should be first refined and the related industries built up. Only the excess petroleum should be exported.

I think it would be in the interest of the nation not to export crude oil under current government. They have a very high appetite of public resources so I would not trust them

Why is fuel in Kenya so expensive and yet we can mine

Sent overseas for refinery and sold back to Kenya at a higher price. 🤣
@upstreamstory
@upstreamstory 5 күн бұрын
There are a number of reasons why fuel is expensive in Kenya. First, we are a net oil importing nation, which means we import all the fuel we consume in Kenya. This means we are at the mercy of the international oil and gas prices. Two, in Kenya, taxes are a big component of the final fuel prices. If you analyze the prices, you will realize that taxation takes or constitutes about 50% of the fuel prices you pay at the petrol station. This means that government has made the fuel prices expensive in Kenya through taxes it levies...and there is a formula for that. Third, we are still not producing our oil and gas resources in Turkana. The process of exploration and production is a complex one, and it takes a long period from the time you discover oil or gas, to the time you start consuming it within the country In Kenya's context, the oil and gas in Turkana belongs to the oil companies that is exploring it, and since they are the ones who have invested money, their share or interest in the oil is high at the moment. National Oil Company of Kenya holds a 10% interest in the oil in Turkana, and under the PSC (production sharing contract), there is a formula of how the oil revenues would be shared between Investors, Kenya's government, and local communities. Another point to note is that the oil in Turkana will be exported, and then Kenya wil import oil or gas as is the case today. It would require us to build a refinery, either conventional or modular refinery if we are to turn oil in Turkana into refined petroleum products for local or domestic market. Kenya does not have enough oil and gas resources to justify building a refinery. To continue learning more, join my community and newsletter with this link: joewatson.kit.com/ae1d312cf0

@@oasis5683 Building a refinery in Kenya at the moment does not make any economic sense. There is not enough oil and gas resources discovered yet to provide enough throughput for the refinery per day. It is easier and cheaper to export our crude oil, and import finished petroleum products. If more discoveries are made in Kenya, then a case can be made for building of a refinery as is the case in Uganda.
