I think playing as a Red Mage could also be fun. They may use a sword, but that's not their only tool, they are equally skilled in melee combat (with their rapier), "White" magic, and "Black" magic. They're the ultimate "Jack of All Trades, Master of None". They may not be as capable in each of the three facets as a more specialized character, but they make up for that with their incredible versatility. There's even a fan-made "Companion Guide" that adds all of the Races & Jobs from FF XIV and converts them into a D&D 5e format. Everything from Samurai, to Ninja, to Red Mage, to Dark Knight is covered.

I'd actually recommend the Tavern Brawler feat instead of the tough feat. Sure, extra health is nice but you're a glass cannon in the first place, act like it. You can grapple with a bonus action after an unarmed strikes (or improvised weapon attack) and it also fits in character, Tifa is a bartender after all.

Nice build, I like to think that the progression is her fighter levels are more of a brawler since she lives in the slums, but then became more refined over time, leading to more martial arts prowess. Its a shame that the extra attacks dont stack, or that there is an alternative because it really does limit the build potential. I like to home rule it that while it doesnt stack, you can take an a feat instead, though its subject to the DMs approval.

I like the idea but it could power creep. For 10 levels you would then have 3 ASIs instead of 3 for level 20. I would go further but at that point you might be shooting yourself in the foot by sacrificing the higher lv abilities.

I would also consider Barbarian instead of Fighter. "Unbridled Strength" could work well as the Barbarian's Rage, and you'd also get advantage on grapples. Though unfortunately none of the subclasses would be easy to reflavor if it goes beyond a dip, except for maybe the "Animal totems" actually being materia.

Unfortunately, you don't gain Advantage on grapples while raging because they count as Attack Rolls rather than Strength checks.

Episode #146 of the Fire Emblem stats: Tifa. She's great at brawling and that's pretty much all she needs as far as weapon strengths are concerned. She's fast and strong but she has poor magic as a drawback.

Rune Knight still works quite well as a fighter archetype when you consider the runes carved into your equipment to be like inserted Materia. (Even though you said you were avoiding those but... eh.) Which is how I'll be doing this build in the future, although with a different name and personality. I've always been a fan of Tifa's ability to kick ass and this is a great representation of it :D

Already figured out Diavolo, he's pretty much a Changeling using the faceless background to use Doppio properly. As far as class levels go, he's a multi-class between Astral Self Monk(17), Divine Soul Sorcerer(1), and either Divination or Chronurgy Wizard(2). This enables the ability for Diavolo to kill someone in a single turn, whilst preventing others from interrupting. It just works!

To add insult to injury...or just injury to injury...Cody of Taking 20 made homebrew changes to a few feats including! Grappler and gave it all the standard stuff but also they get: GRAPPLER: You gain the following Grapple Maneuvers; -Shoulder Spear Move at least 10 feet before your grapple you may use a bonus action to attempt to knock an opponent prone as part of your grapple. If they exceed your opponent's contested check by 5 or more, they gain the restrained condition for one round. Your character is prone; -Head Smash You may use an attack action to try and stun a creature grappled by you. To do so, make another grapple. If you succeed the target must make a CON save of 8+Prof+Str or be stunned for one round; -Wrist Grab If you succeed on a grapple check, your target may not make attacks with their arm(s), including weapons they may be holding or natural attacks (IE Claws). You may attempt to grab one or two forelimbs when you use this feature. If your attempting to restrain two forelimbs, the target has advantage on their contested check; ^---I think that'd be hilarious for Tifa to just dismantle people. Food for thought.

It’s really weird that fighters only get extra attack at level 5. Every other class that gets extra attack gets extra attack and something else. Barbarians get fast movement, Paladins and Rangers get 2nd level spells, and monks get Stunning strike.

While you're on the final fantasy topic, Freya Crescent from 9 would be a fun one. I don't think I've met someone yet who didn't like the character. There's a divide on whether you think she was handled properly or if they didn't develop her enough, but she was a pretty rat girl with an old school dragoon look and insane physical combat power. I recall one of my favorite moves with her being the jump. When you got trance she'd jump into the air, spend time raining down spears from above until trance ran out, then slam down with a massive ass stab. Leg power like you wouldn't believe, insanely accurate throwing spears, a lance that could topple a nation, she was an ideal physical fighter to me.

So lets dissect Grappler for a second. The first feature, advantage on a creature you're grappling, is pretty decent, but the secondary use, the pinning technique, is pretty garbage. You're giving up your advantage on attacking the target to restrain yourself, making yourself unable to move the enemy around, giving everyone except the person you grappling advantage to hit you, and giving yourself disadvantage on dexterity saves. Yes your target suffers all these ill effects too, but the simple fact of the matter is, since you'd have advantage to hit them if they were restrained anyway, the disadvantage you have on your own attack rolls makes that point moot, as well as getting rid of your advantage via grappling. The simple fact of the matter is, this feat actually makes you worse at grappling. You can get most of the same effects with none of the negatives by using your first attack to do a shove, knocking your enemy prone, then using your second attack to grapple the prone target, something you can do without going prone yourself. In this scenario, you and all your allies have advantage on your attack rolls, the enemy cannot stand without breaking the grapple first due to their speed being zero, and the target has disadvantage on all their attack rolls. The only thing you're losing out on is making them have disadvantage on dex saves, and odds are that's not gonna matter when you and your buddies can pull a Narancia, Mista, Abbacio triple special on them while you hold them by their ankle. Long analysis short. Never take Grappler. Any character with extra attack can do everything the feat allows but better already.

I haven't done the calculations to see if this is actually necessary, but the prodigy feat from xanathar could be a more "meta" style pick, taking expertise in athletics so your grapples are even harder to get out of. Depending on if some monsters would be able to escape your normal grapple, this might be more useful compared to that capped dexterity

Honestly the only FF-X characters that aren't just Stock Mono-Class or quick level dippers are Wakka and MAYBE Khimari. There's not much stuff for copying Monster-unique attacks so there'd have to be a lot of abstraction for Lancet/Ronso Rage shenanigans. Throwing a ball is moderately unique and not very well articulated since throwing weapons in D&D are infamously strange.

I'd take a different route for optimization. Race: V.Human with Tavern Brawler, for bonus action grapples and bar-based themery. L1: FIghter for Brawler L2: Monk for unarmed combat+defense L3-7: Fighter for Action Surge, Extra attack, and 2 ASI's. Archetype would be Battle Master (Trip, Evasive, Disarm) L8-10: Monk for Open Hand archetype, Ki Points, and an ASI. L11-20: Finish as a Fighter for 4 ASI's, all the battle master stuff, Indomitable, and Extra Attack II: Electric Boogaloo My reasoning is thus: Grappler is kind of a trap feat. Restraining yourself to restrain the enemy is dangerous. But advantage on all attacks against a guy is pretty nice, right? Well... You can do the same thing with Trip Maneuvers, Open Hand trips, and the Push maneuver. A prone opponent is giving up all sorts of advantage in melee, without compromising your own defense. Not only that, it enhances your defense against that target, as they make attacks at disadvantage. They also can't get up from being prone while they're grappled as they're effectively Speed 0, so they STAY down. This build may be a bit more optimized, getting 2 more ASIs to balance out the MAD, and avoiding the overlapping Extra Attacks and unarmed damage dice (if you're grappling, you're using the d6 from the fighting style and not the d8). Not to mention the synergy of Battle Master and Ki Points both recharging on short rests. I think Battle Master is a great way to show off Tifa's martial arts mastery as well, moreso than the Champion's expanded crit range (though that does kinda play into the attack slots limit break).

He's just a little to broken IMO for a build that covers ALL of what he can do... Stat points... Str:8 Dex: 14 Con: 13 Int: 15 Wis: 12 Cha: 10. Yeah is is super strong in the books, but he uses dex weapons, so Str is the dump here. Best bet for classes is 3 levels of rogue and take Assassin (need that Stealth expertise.). Then 17 levels in Necromancy Wizard and focus all your spells slots on raising an army. The class feature Undead thralls (at 6th lvl) helps a lot in this as their hit points are increased by 1 per Wizard lvl, and adds your proficiency bonus to damage rolls. You also get Command Undead at 14th lvl to try and take over existing undead. Animate Dead (3rd) is your first (which you automatically get at Wizard lvl 6 from the Undead Thralls feature), and later, Danse Macabre (5th), and Create Undead (6th). (The latter two don't get the extra undead from the class feature by using Animate Dead, but still gain the stat boosts. Danse Macabre also gives further to hit/damage from your Spellcasting modifier). Using a 9th level slot, with the boost from Undead Thralls class feature, you can summon 14 creatures in one Animate Dead or 13 slightly better undead from Danse Macabre. Also Create Undead (6th) can get you some Wights, that while they cost some higher level spell slots to do so (2 Wights at 8th and 3 at 9th), Wights can create more undead on their own, but depending on how your DM handles it, you might not get to keep them for other battles (like how Jin-Woo can only keep a certain amount of summons). So I'd use Create Undead (lvls 8-9) as his Generals (Mostly for Igris or Iron... But your DM might let you use other creatures for the others), while Danse Macabre (lvls 5-7) are more his Lieutenants and Animate Dead (lvls 3-4) are more for his regular soldiers. The only big problem is you need bones/corpses to make these summons... So you better be able to carry all the required bones (skeletons/attacking) or corpses ( Zombies/meat shields). As for race...? Variant Human or course! Raised Int and Dex and I took the feat "Dragon Fear", and got +1 constitution with it. It also allows you to "Radiate Menace" and make creatures scared of you. Something we know he does a LOT. Oh yeah, and the mage hand cantrip. Not as efficient as his "Dominators Touch" but still handy in retrieving thrown daggers. In the end I maxed Int and got Dex to 19. This build does not end up with high HP (DND beyond average is 126 with final Con of 14) and your AC is not great. But that is why you have an army. If you don't want to use all your spell slots for just summoning, you can add flavor spells like Shield (or Mage armor) Fireball and Reduce/Enlarge (Tusk uses these 3 regularly). And finally, your 1-2 lvl spells should be helpful for your Assassin abilities ( since they cannot raise any undead). Like Invisibility. Maybe Blur? Or misty Step. All of the above? All the better to move silently.

Tulok. Instead of the though feat. Do 1 lvl or rouge for expertise on athletics. We are speaking of a straight +6 to athletics checks to grapple, shove, climb, and of curse some forms of jump. (the total should be a +17 at lvl 20 with 20 Str)

Tifa is FF7's version of Betty from Archie comics. (not that stupid CW show) she's the very useful best friend type who everyone but the protagonist can see is the right girl for him. Tifa and Yuffie were my favorites to play, Tifa for punching stuff and Yuffie for Steal.
