Why bother with multiclassing? You can do magic initiate to get that spell, or use bards magical secrets. Both would let you keep in bard and get those higher level abilities

The best thrown weapon fighter is a college of swords bard. Blade flourish: Whenever you hit with a weapon attack( note it doesn't specify melee or ranged or if you need proficiency with it) you can spend one bardic inspiration to perform a blade flourish. Mobile flourish: You push the target 5 + bardic inspiration die in feet away from you. Then you can move up to your movement to within 5 feet of the target. Slashing flourish( the best one): You can add the bardic inspiration to the damage of the attack and another creature within 5 feet of you takes the extra damage as well. This means you can throw a dagger and have it boomerang back to you, hitting an enemy next to you( no attack roll needed).

I'd just go for a pact of the tome feylock with their tome flavored to be a deck of cards, and eldritch blast re-flavored to be him throwing said cards. Then you can multi-class with rogue/bard/whatever to fill out the rest.

I feel like Monk 12 (Kensei) Fighter 4 (Eldritch Knight) Rogue 4 (Arcane Trickster) with Martial Adept to grab Thrown Weapon Fighting on top of Archery would be pretty solid. Cause who doesn't love throwing out 3d8+2d6+2d4+14 damage a turn at the small small of two darts. (Also for all those number crunchers out there, that's 39.5 dmg on average)

@@yeahno2764 It's a Critical Role thing. Spoiler territory, so I'll try to keep it brief: + + + + + + + + The first tiefling used home made tarot cards to give made up readings to people. They had meanings, but he'd mostly make them up depending on what he thought the person needed to hear. One session, where a few players were out of town and their characters were captured and out of combat, the remaining members engaged an enemy they weren't ready for and this tiefling died. The other tiefling was played by one of the players that was out of town, and she inherited his cards, believing that she owed it to him to use them to spread joy and comfort in his honor. It gets a lot more convoluted after that.

This was very fun. Very different from the version i built a few months ago, much closer to the character than mine tbh. Same race, I considered monk but Gambit is not supremely wise so i went soul knife rogue and dipped 2 levels into warlock hexblade for eldritch blast reflavored as exploding throwing cards and a few evocations, (beguiling influence for more skills, and agonzing blast for more oomph in your cards) this gives you the ability to wield a staff using charisma thanks to hex warrior and use medium armor if you desire (grabbing medium armor master later makes you equal to a heavy armor user except that you can stealth which is dope). Love the videos. This is one of my favorite channels. Keep it up.

I was ruminating over a Gambit build and my slapdash solution was a hex blade warlock multiclassed into a eloquence bard with a focus on blast and charm invocations/spells. It’s a cheat because the blasts aren’t thrown weapons but it keeps him pretty effective from the get go

I ended up making my Gambit-esque character with Soulblade, College of Spirits Bard, and a 1 level dip into Fighter for Dueling style. The way Soulknife is/was written lets you yeet a blade in one hand and then another in your other hand which was empty. I just liked the College of Spirits because you can use cards as a spellcasting focus.

First off - thank you Tulok, both for being a good dude just in general and for making such a fun channel. You've really helped me rethink how I do D&D in a lot of ways, especially regarding heavy reflavoring of existing things - and that really helps both as a player, and as a DM; because if I can get myself (or my players) closer to their vision for a character, then there's more investment. That just makes everything better from an RP standpoint. Some builds I'd love to see someday, just as grist for the mill - Jesse Faden, Control Y'shtola Ruhl, Final Fantasy XIV Space Marines and/or Sisters of Battle, WH40k (Like the MiB video where it's more a 'type' rather than a specific individual) Arthas Menethil/The Lich King, Warcraft Glimmer, She-Ra Reboot (Bow would be cool too but he's not that far off Hawkeye in terms of build I'd think) I have ideas on how to accomplish most of these myself, but I'm curious how you'd do it. Feel free to ignore though, they're just things I'd like to see and I'll be watching regardless.

@@u.s.s.chucklefucker1657 Yes, Though Genosha has made an Appearance in Movies, it's not anywhere near what it was in comics. in Movies it's Basically a Ranch on an Island where Magneto Lives with a few other Mutants. In Comics it was a Full Island Nation with a Thriving Community of mutants, Till a Massive Sentinel showed up and turned it into a Parking Lot. Before the Mutants Moved in it had been a Small nation that Ha Concentration camps for Mutants, after the place got dismantled Magneto among others decided using that place to Build a Nation for Mutants, where they wouldn't be harassed by whatever Government of whatever place they lived, would be an Ironic Twist, so that's what they did. The place has also Made an apearnce in Animated show "Wolverine and the X-Men", Except in that Version the Sentinel attack was planned by Mageto's when he Allowed them to destroy Genosha, so that he could Claim that the Humans attacked first and had it coming when he'd Retaliate.

Love the Wild Card Rouge that used to be on dndbeyond. It truley was gambit. Playing Cards - Card Throw If you have not yet used your Sneak Attack this turn, you can use your action to take one of these cards and attack a creature within 30 ft. with it. The attack roll for this feature uses your Dexterity modifier, and on a hit, it deals 1d4 +6 slashing damage. When you roll for damage, look at the number rolled on the d4. The attack gains a random effect based on the number rolled, as detailed in the Wild Card Suit table. You can attack using a card 1 time(s) per long rest

Warlock for magic stone and eldritch blast as cards/thrown objects, Pact of the Tome for charisma based Shillelagh. MC into fighter or paladin, whatever to get Extra Attack, probably Great Weapon Master since your best ranged attack isn't weapon based. Make sure to take Polearm Master at some point, MC into Rogue for flavor and thieves cant. Urchin or criminal background does most of the heavy lifting for flavor, his background is pretty standard D&D stuff. Martial Class 6+/Warlock 4+/Rogue 2+ Doesn't matter really where you put the other 8 levels. Grab charm and damage spells to stay on theme. Edit: His Warlock patron is Mr. Sinister.

8:17 I'd argue that sneak attack *could* work with your quarterstaff, because it's one of your monk/kensei weapons. While it doesn't say a monk weapon automatically becomes a finesse weapon, they functionally become one.

Monk weapons are specifically worded to not be finesse weapons to prevent exactly what you're suggesting. Just like gow barbarian reckless atrack is specifically only for STR attacks to prevent rogues from combining it with sneak attack.

How about a much simpler and maybe more effective build? What do you think about Swashbuckler with a single dip in hexblade warlock. You get booming blade (for your hex quarter staff) and magic stone (switch out stones for cards). Grab Polearm master and war caster so you can booming blade when someone enters your reach. Both magic stone and booming blade stack with sneak attack. Also you can focus on charisma since your hex weapon allows you to use charisma as instead of strength for your quarter staff and instead of dex for your thrown weapon.

I think I woulda gone: -variant human with magic initiate feat: warlock for 2 cantrips: eldritch blast (his cards) and maybe magic stone or friends; and 1x 1st lvl spell: either charm person or expeditious retreat -background is either the gambler from Acquisitions Inc sourcebook or just criminal/spy -1st level rogue (so many tasty skills and expertise!) to reflect his criminal background growing up in the thieves guild of New Orleans -Kensai monk ( I really like your idea here) which would be his primarily class up to probably 15th level. -Rogue levels sprinkled in to get the assassin subclass for the assassinate feature as well as uncanny dodge at 5th level. -Lucky feat for the first ASI and probably go dex and cha for the rest of the ASI options, though sharpshooter or spell sniper would be a nice addition So in the end, 5 assassin/15 kensai monk. Still, your idea here has some nice options. Gambit was my favorite Xmen growing up so this was exciting, thanks!

Episode #251 of the Fire Emblem stats: Remy LeBeau. Gambit's good with lances (the closest thing to his staff) and reason (the closest thing to explosive cards). He has a weakness in heavy armor due to how his powers work. He has the greatest stats in magic and charm. His only bad stat is in speed.

I replaced the Bard with Druid then took Magic Stone and She-Lay-Lay as well as Thunderwave. Then I replaced Rogue with 4 lvls of GS Ranger for Thrown Weapons fighting style, Hunters Mark and Hail of Thorns.... The card hits hard and has some AOE

Not a bad build overall. Sounds like it fills that fun spot of being an accurate rp build while also being overall pretty effective, even if not maxxed out power wise. Those are the good ones imo. Strong enough to not be gimping you or your party, but built around an interesting character and personality rather than your goal of dishing out 30 d10 +47 damage per round at 20.

Ah... finally. I was curious how you would end up doing this build. I actually have a gambit knock off that i've been playing for a while, pretty similar to what you came up with, and im glad that we had the same thought on Kensei Monk. Mine works a bit different though. 17 levels monk (i dont really care about invisibility) and 3 levels of wild card rogue. (Im at level 11 now, so im not done but that's the plan anyway)I saw that comment that "remy doesnt really do a lot of the stuff in that list" which i agree with. All of the extra casting is more for the twisted fate character than for gambit himself. However, as a rogue you can use cunning action to replace many step of the wind traits, saving ki points for more important stuff like flurry of blows and stunning strike. Wild card allows cards to be a weapon without reflavoring, so i went that route to get that ability. (Also, i did read the point about it being non-official. The alternative before that stuff came out was going to be 3 levels thief rogue, because remy is after all the prince/king of thieves in new orleans). To get the persuasion and influence superpowers i went variant human and took the magic initiate feat for friends and suggestion (yes, i know suggestion doesnt technically qualify but dm approved since it is a bit more "in character" than "charm person" from our perspective, and because it is only 1/day it didnt break a whole lot of stuff.)

Throwing weapons may not be very powerful in D&D, but they're still top-tier in terms of cool factor. And there's one throwing weapon specialist I'd love to see tackled in D&D: Maeve of Blades from Paladins: Champions of the Realm.

So, this seems pretty close to a Setzer Gabbiani build from Final Fantasy 6, but that would need a sword instead of a staff. Also probably a dip into artificer because of all the airship stuff since he's shown to make repairs on it himself. Think that would replace the bard level?

Thrown weapons are not ranged weapons, so you can't get extra damage from Sharpshooter. You do get the other benefits of Sharpshooter though.
