Having declared my dissatisfaction with this sharpener last night kzbin.infoUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ I thought about the problem some more. It occurred to me that I might be undoing each attempt at achieving a sharp edge by the repeated attempts. So, I tried to clean up the unsatisfactory result by honing with only positions 3 and 4.Miracle!! A really nicely sharpened chef's knife, more than enough to handle my needs. Admittedly, it did not reach professionally sharpened razor-fineness, but it is now significantly sharper than it was. A bout of breaking down carrots convinced me. So, major apologies to the manufacturer, Amazon, and all happy and potential owners! Follow the directions: don't buy it if you have ceramic blades; and don't overwork your knife blade.

Could you use a whetstone with a lower grit and move it back and forth in place of the roller?
@UkuleleJayBBQ
@UkuleleJayBBQ Жыл бұрын
I don't think it would work as the rolling is 100% consistent and you're not really pushing much against the blade. I personally wouldn't have the dexterity to do that with much precisions. Also you would be sort or jerky going back and forth so the metal wouldn't be getting the level of removal (just a theory thinking about it). What do you think?

If you talk Rolling Sharpener, you should consider the Horl 1993 system with interchangeable disk, I use the pro who rolls 3 time faster than the normal, get also the corse diamond to start a dull tool. on top 🔝 you can get the Belgian (Belgischer Broch) kit with 3 grit 1200, 5000 & 8000

The German company HORL that invented this system (and that has taken legal action) has a bunch of useful accessories and the ability to swap out the discs for finer and coarser grinding. It's more money, but it might be a better long term investment, particularly if these guys lose their legal battle and go tits up.

the Horl 2 is a great product and very well made and I am glad that they have taken legal action . The diamond disc is around 400 grit so you can apex a really dull knife quickly. I went for the aditional 3000 and 6000 stones and have been able to get consistent super sharp edges that i am just not proficient enough to achieve with a whetstone.

Funny to see these knives again, after so many years when I sold Cutco to pay for my college in the mid sixties. I recommend the BROD and TAYLOR sharpener above all others. I have used every type of sharpening tool for almost 60 years and this is the GOAT. Don't tell me about stones, belts or fancy gizmos with rods and spaceship-like setups. I have used a straight edge for shaving until I was 70 years old, so I know how to put an edge on something. I now spend a minute before using and a minute after using my knives to keep them more than sharp enough to break down large Cryo hunks of beef with ease. Sure I have to use the tip down angle to restore an edge, BUT RARELY, No more using a steel to touch up the edge, just a stroke or two when I feel any drag and I'm good to go. Shaving sharp and ridiculously simple as long as you JUST FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS. BTW I don't have any serrated knives except for bread and table-top steak knives and they never seem to need any sharpening,

I have a Brod and Taylor and they do work well but the HONE sharpener does work better for many reasons. Nothing wrong with Broad and Taylor but I like the ability to use what grits I want on my knives and controlling the edge angles with my other sharpeners. I love the Tormek T1 which is my go to for most of my kitchen knives now in the house.

I just recently purchased this. I must say, it can be extremely dangerous if you use too much pressure on the blade while rolling it. Several times my hand slipped off the tumbler and my hand almost hit the blade. Without some pressure you're not doing anything. With more pressure you press the blade tighter against the magnetic. The magnet doesn’t hold the blade very securely and a little bit of light pressure will move the knife blade around too much.
@UkuleleJayBBQ
@UkuleleJayBBQ Жыл бұрын
I found myself always holding the handle down as depending on the size and length of knife I have noticed a lot of movement at times. I used this for testing and now only use my Tormek T1 and Work Sharp Precison Adjust elite. They are in my opinion two of the best companies (been around a long time and well respected) that manufacture sharpeners. Tormek in Sweden and Work Sharp here in the U.S. I have several reviews on Work Sharp and many more coming as well as Tormek which is amazing for kitchen knives and cleavers.

I spoke to HORL personally, did you? They have never stated they are suing them anywhere and also did not confirm that with me either. Tumbler also stated to me personally they have no legal action pending with HORL, so please cite your resource. I won't allow random no based stated facts to remain on my channel, but if you can show me the legal action paperwork, then great. I keep all comments, negative or positive that are respectful but will not allow people making factual statements that are not true and cannot be confirmed. I'd love to see the evidence as so far you are parroting other viewers who cannot produce 1 single bit of evidence of any legal action. Regardless HONE just made Tumbler obsolete. U.S. Patent Pending is confirmed and was designed from the ground. It has more features than HORL at 1/3 the price for the HORL PRO and can do things the HORL cannot. HONE just went on the market so no one has heard about it yet (but they soon will). When everyone sees HONE (NOT HORL) they can see and decide for themselves but it's not a knock off at all. No one even has the features it does in how it works. You can see it here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nICoaXWNZsxngqM

Splendid review, thanks. Many things to consider: If the knives have been used and sharpened for many years, the thickness of the blade at the cutting edge becomes extremely large as compared to the original thickness (the blade is short and fat at the edge now), so I would recommend thinning the knife. secondly; in order to prolong the longevity of the fresh edge, the blade should be de-stressed, ie, grinding the old edge off and the stressed metal under the old edge (you tube sharpening gurus do it, but they have no idea why, or what they are doing). The metal under the old edge is fatigued, just as the metal behind a stress fracture (Bend a paperclip back and forth until it breaks) fatigued metal can be sharpened, but it won't hold an edge. Many thanks for the video, you've picked up a new subscriber.

Thank you so much and that is great info. I am currently waiting for a machine that is of commercial grade that will let me do this. I have a 40 year old Wustof original Grand Prix 8" chef knife I love and another meat slicer which has been sharpened so the edge now protrudes into the granton edge so there is so separation between the indents and the edge. Not sure if that can even be fixed but I would love to be able to. Any thoughts? Much appreciate the follow and comments!
@thomasgronek6469
@thomasgronek6469 10 ай бұрын
Lets start with the granton edge. If the handle is nice and high, I'm leaning toward a bit of blade rework with maybe a fine file and some coarse paper to have one fancy, one-of-a-kind cheese knife. the old grand Prix sounds as though it definitely needs thinning. I did several old Wustof's for my father-in-law that desperately needed thinning (He just passed away at 94 Years old, the knives were a wedding gift from about 65 years ago (or more). He was pleased as punch, he didn't realize how thick they had gotten behind the edge from years of use. Although he maintained the edge at about 40', the cutting face as almost 1/4 inch thick. Never overlook the usefulness of a set of good files to start the thinning process. I wish I had used them or a diamond stone instead of the old Norton combination stone I used. Maybe practice on a POS knife from the thrift store. Best of luck @@UkuleleJayBBQ

You can make a DIY roll sharpener using a can of beans, two,o-rings, a block of wood with a 15-degree angle at one end a 20-degree angle at the other end, and some wet-dry sandpaper. It is always better when sharpening a knife to start with a coarser grit and work down to a finished grit. If you find yourself using a lot of pressure your sandpaper is too fine,

They have a KZbin channel where they will purposely use the sharpness tester correctly before it is sharpened (as slow as possible) and then after it is sharpened they use it incorrectly by forcing the knife (often which they call dull before sharpening) into the string, therefore giving it a better score. And the other people are right, this is definitely a knock off of HORL.

Thank you. I was made aware of HORL after this review (never had heard of them) and after further legal research on my part, there are no legal issues in the U.S. with the product. The Tumbler has a U.S. patent pending and HORL has no U.S. trademark, patent or copyright I found at the U.S.P.T.O. It’s a similar situation for any product made in other countries, either reverse engineered or externally copied but made differently internally. I understand but to say “Pirated” leans to illegality which this does not appear to be. There is no illegality in the U.S. as of my review. I had a U.S. patent personally which was copied in China and I did not have an International patent so I knew it would be sold elsewhere. They tried to sell it in the U.S. but were shut down as I held all rights in the U.S. and no rights internationally. It’s a sensitive subject. If it were illegal I would so a follow up and let people know as I have no connection to The Tumbler.

If the knife you're sharpening is used for easy or slim slices, such as a paring knife, I would go with a 20° edge and a knife for a little tougher cuts, 15°. Think of sharpening an axe.
