Horl is actually a German brand that came out with the first version of this sharpener a few years ago, so good on you for getting the original one! It was founded by a father and son after the father had fiddled around with many prototypes for 30 years now (hence the 1993 on the logo) Tumbler (the American brand heavily advertising online) blatantly stole the idea and did not even make a good job of it. It's cheaper and definitely works but the Horl is miles better. I believe Horl has also taken legal action since the mechanisms are patented but I guess it's a slow process across the atlantic ocean...

From what I read, they are both fashioned after a patent that expired around 1966. The Horl needs be to be a lot better, for over $400. The Tumbler is 1/4 that. I cannot justify the difference for my knives.

You're comparing two different products. The "regular" horl sharpener is around 100€, so it's reasonably priced. The 400€ one you are talking about is a special edition with a gear box inside making the disc spin faster.

Not the exact same. The Tumbler only comes with a 2000 grit stone that's not interchangeable. Takes forever to sharpen a knife that doesn't already have a good edge. The honing steel side also isn't hard enough to properly work. The Horl 2 comes with a 450 grit and a 1000 grit side, and you can purchase 220, 3000, 6000, and 10k grits separately for proper sharpening. The Tumbler's magnets are also usually very poor, and it doesn't roll nearly as well.

There are lots of knife sharpening systems out there that will hold a constant angle against the edge. But this one by far does it with a far simpler bit of kit that doesn't require a tower and guide rods to be set up. This is so simple a grandma can pull it off in her kitchen. And it will get you a nice 'toothy' edge like you normally get with a flat stone. Toothy edges aren't show quality edges were you can see your reflection in the polished edge, but rather a performance edge that you can actually feel has some bite when it slices into something. 17 degrees is nice for slicing knives for meat, but will require more maintenance with a honing steel to keep sharp. The 23 degree edge is a good sturdy edge for your vegetable and utility knives as it will hold an edge for longer and needs less honing.

These sharpeners have been makin the rounds lately, and while the results are what you'd expect from any sharpening assisting kit or tool, these things are WAY more overpriced than they have any right to be. They cost somewhere like 150-200 USD, where you can grab like a Gatco or Lansky sharpening kit or something similar for around 50-70 which'll produce the same, or better, results with a wider range of edge degrees available. Bit more hassle to set up sure, but not enough of a hassle to justify 130-150 dollars more for a sharpening tool/kit.

Thanks for reviewing this, I had been curious as to whether or not this was just a gimmick or if it was something that actually worked. I have a few blades that are a bit on the long side that are decent steel but on the lower end of the quality spectrum compared to some of my better top shelf knives and I thought that if this thing actually worked and did what it claimed it would make it a lot easier for me to sharpen those blades without having to spend as much time and attention to detail as I do with my better knives. Looks like I'll be purchasing one of these and just by the very nature of how it works its going to make it way easier and save me quite a bit of time sharpening my really long blades. 👍😉😎👍

my oldest boy is a knife fanatic, he sharpens all his friends and their family's knives and such as a side gig even. he has some extremely expensive knifes in his collection and never not gets mad at me for sharping my cheap crap knife with any hand held sized rock i can find anywhere just as sharp as anything he has to sharpen his.

Horl is actually a small company in Germany that makes these. I am sure by now there are some cheaper knockoffs, but I have their Pro model and I haven't really used my whetstones since I got it.

There are copycats, someone on KZbin sells them. Makes a ton of shorts showing it... and then showing he doesn't know how to use a sharpness testing machine.

Horl is actually the inventor of this sharpener (or at least the first one to bring it to market), Tumbler USA knocked it off. I've seen mixed reviews about this kind of system though.
