I tune my snare to G#. (295/398) Gives you a Bonham tone. If that's too high, try G (265/385) giving you a more "traditional" sound. Keep in mind G is in middle of snare tuning range.

I also tune my snare to the same 295/398 Bonham setting. It definitely works for me.

I think your video is informational and I don't personaly value or appreciate the harsh comments on some folks below. I concur that instead of using the rings to cut the harmonics, I would lower the tuning frequencies and reduce the delta between the resonnant and batter skins, and ut them inb the 250/350 range. I find this video great at demonstrating the results of what the rings actually do to creeate a fatter sound, at the cost of eliminating the natural expression of the head. It's a comprmise that you may want some times on some certain songs and is a great option. I think the Tune-Bot is quite a new and long awaited innovation. I'll surely replace my Dial-Tone with this. Thank you for posting this video.

Use a soft mallet instead of a drum stick and you’ll eliminate a lot of those overtones. The reason the snare head feels mushy around where the wires go is because there’s snare beds there. They are cutouts in the bearing edge that allow the wires to sit flatter.

You have a massive disproportion that is choking the drum. 400Hz is the max that you can you go with the reso but as long as you are going with high tuning in the batter. You are at the dead lower end of the snare with 180hz so your Reso should be around 270Hz. See the tuning guide in the Tune-bot page, has all this well explained.... Also if you don´t like overtones or ringing, there are other heads that do that, the Ambassador is a head with sistain, is relatively thin and 1 ply.

I was thinking the same thing about the big difference between the batter head and snare side head. The Bethel drummers do tend to tune their snare side that high, but I'm not sure they tune their batter head that low. They use a remo power stroke 4 on top usually, which is a coated 2 ply head (2 7 mil plies with a ring around the perimeter for even more dampening; then they put an e ring on top and a moon gel halfway on the batter and halfway on the e ring sometimes). The remo power stroke 4 head produces a low note even at a higher tension. There's another guy on youtube that played with Jeremy Riddle that tunes his batter head to 235 Hz, which is WAY higher than 180. He is using a vintage ambassador head, by the way, which is a 2 ply head (1 6.5 mil and 1 3 mil ply).

Man you should not hit a snare side head that hard. Try to remove it and you will see all those hits you made over the head. If that machine needs more volume to make its readings just use mallets

Thanks for the feedback! You are right on seeing those marks, I have seen those on previous snare heads I've replaced. I usually replace the snare side quarterly. I'll have to give the mallet suggestion a go next time. Thanks again!

Nice but it's better to use a snare stand..mute the batter head first..if you see readings between 300 and 400 it's OK..after that use the filter button..don't mute the batter any more and you get perfect readings..happy tuning.

The rings basically make it sound like a cardboard box. As much as I don't like the "fat" sound in the 1st place you can achieve it without the rings by backing off the bottom 4 lugs about a quarter turn or so ( on a 10 lug). Elevation is the only one I've heard that doesn't sound like trash out of the major worship bands, it baffles me why you take a $800 snare and choke the life out of it, you can do that with a cheap Amazon drum. Anyway of the box for now. Appreciate the lesson with the bot either way😉

I need to finish editing the other videos which I hope to do so this week. It will demonstrate the tune guide more. Make sure to subscribe and turn on notifications so you can see that and get the guide as a resource, but here’s the numbers I used - Tom 1: 114 Batter/201 Reso || Tom 2: 90 Batter/159 Reso That being said when I was at Elevation this past October I was surprised that he actually tunes his toms pretty high, but this will be nice, big and tubby.

First of all, thank you for the good video. I use a Tunebot to tune the Snare Bottom head. No matter how tight it is, it doesn't go up more than 180 Hz. What's the problem?

Hey thanks so much for the comment! Since I've been tightening the batter head more than I used to it naturally rings a bit more than what I'm used to, but the E-Ring definitely helps get rid of the ring. The E-Ring makes the snare sound fat and tubby again while giving a nice stick feel.

Mmm, that just doesn’t sound good. It’s choked, it’s boxy, it’s lifeless, and the snare response is wonky. 400 and 180 is waaaay too big a difference. That won’t allow for ANY shell resonance or tone. (Better to tune for tone and feel, then dampen for dryness) Perfect 4ths would be a much better sound and much more usual. For that you’d go for more like 400/300 or better yet, 390/295 (yes, 10hz makes a big difference). If you want a lower pitch, BOTH heads should be lower - say 350/260. Try the 390/295 tuning with an E-ring and you’ll be sold, I promise. You’ll get a huge, fat sound with lots of tone and pop, and an epic rimshot. Please, just give it a try!

Bread& Butter Let us know how you made out! I’m using those numbers on a 14x8, so if you’re on quite a different size I can recommend some different numbers. I like to get a drum where it sounds really good wide open, and then if I need a fatter, drier sound I can add a TruTone or even a ring.
@DZNTZ
@DZNTZ 3 жыл бұрын
@james Doctor 390/295 is gonna sound pretty good, yeah. Should be a nice crispy pop. It might be a bit dry or thin, if it is I’d try getting the heads closer to unison to get the shell involved a little more - 300/300 can be your starting point and take it up from there until you reach your sound. I know it seems like everyone cranks up the reso, and that is a good usable sound, but it might benefit from the old-school approach. Steve Maxwell has a good tuning vid where he talks more about this kind of tuning. Give it a shot, some drums really come alive with the heads tuned the same or even with the reso head lower than the batter. Some drums sound just perfect at a 390/295 tuning. Shell type, construction, heads, bearing edges, wires, hardware… every snare is a unique combination of variables that responds differently. Experiment, experiment, experiment.

@james Doctor Oh nice! Great drum. That’s one of my favorite sizes, I’ve probably got more 13x7 snares than any other size. I have the Pearl 12x7 Maple which is a very similar build only smaller. So yeah, I’m saying another tuning method is “unison”, with both heads the same tension. 300/300 would be a good starting point to experiment with unison tuning and if you needed to - go up to 320/320, 335/335, or whatever sounds good to you. I just checked the 13x7 on my stand right now and it’s at 390/320 which is pretty high but sounds and feels great. It’s Walnut so it’s got a dark tone that’s never ringy or tinny sounding. I think your drum would probably do well at that tuning as well. Check out Kenny Sharretts on YT and if you follow his tuning methods you can’t go wrong. He also uses a TuneBot or tunes to pitch which you can replicate.
@DZNTZ
@DZNTZ 3 жыл бұрын
@james Doctor The reso head stretching is definitely normal, it moves quite a bit because it’s so thin and there’s a lot of tension. You should certainly start to feel more resistance as you get tighter, but if something feels REALLY difficult to turn - something could be wrong. If all your tension rods and lugs are functioning perfectly and they thread on smoothly (and are the correct length for the drum, I’m assuming your drum is basically new and has all its correct parts) then there’s no issue with going to 390-400 with the reso head. You have to be listening to ONLY the reso head when you tap it for a TuneBot reading - put the drum reso side up on a shaggy carpet, or towel, or just hold your finger in the middle of the batter head to mute it. Flip the snare wires off, slide a skinny drumstick under the middle of the wires and rest the stick across the hoop so it’s lifting the wires off the head but not touching the head. Now you can tap the reso head and get a clean reading. Same for batter head - snare wires off, mute the reso head, and tap on batter. If you just tap without muting the other head, your readings won’t be accurate at all. Memphis Drum will certainly get you sorted. That’s an awesome shop to live near! Let us know how you made out.
