You play wonderfully! Your dad's voice is so mellifluous! And the synergy between you is hope-making!

A new way to teach history. Just discovered TOTM oldies. Watch it Kathryn ,you could end up as mere backing musician. Your old fellas cool ,rich seams of knowledge. Still shocked by OUT ...I think it's called having your misconceptions and delusions crushed. You are just stepping into your stride! The TOTM are little gems, spontaneous and light. Blessings to your family and freinds.

Sir James Douglas, Black Douglas, ended his days killed in combat at the Battle of Teba, Málaga, Spain, fighting against Muslims by the side of Spanish King of Castille and Lion.

I also have a Northern dad (he's Cumbrian), and he tends to be very anecdotal. I remember him dragging me towards the 'licking stones' in Carlisle Castle in the pitch dark. I was scared to death, so I can relate to this.

Every ruin should have a ballad accompanied by the lowland pipes / Northumbrian pipes

Very good! That ruin appears to have been a ruin for less time than many ruins, with all those laths still in place. Is its story anywhere on the internet, for those interested? Was it really The Black Douglas's castle, or did you say that for atmosphere? What's its name, and can people just wander round, or did you get permission? And was Alec Douglas Home a descendant of theirs?
