Was about to comment this. I remember feeling a rush of adrenaline during this scene in the theater as a kid. I just thought of it for some reason and came to check it out. As the video started I thought I would be looking back nostalgically on how hyped I was during this scene, but instead I just got even more hyped watching it now. The way the music rises as they cut between Shrek storming the castle and Fiona starting to dance with Prince Charming - it makes both scenes feel even more tense. Really a fantastic moment from this movie.

I also found Ursula interesting because normally a villian hides their agenda or more dangerous ideas and reveal it after the hero made the wrong choice. I absolutely love the film’s message: You love who you love, regardless of superficiality/materialism/appearances. The Fairy Godmother was a vain, superficial sociopath, and what she’s doing here is ironic to the message she was giving Shrek - she was forcing together two people that “didn’t belong together”. Just as she said Shrek didn’t belong with Fiona. Shrek had more love in his heart than her and her “charming” son put together.

Literally nothing about this could be improved, nothing. The writing, the pacing, the emotionally taut situation, and of course one of the greatest covers ever written. When Shrek and donkey leap over the guards and the music soars, it’s almost too good to be true. It’s flawlessly realized, a total work of art. @alexbolt5 Жыл бұрын
Any animator can make regular looking humans. Just is it can possibly take longer to animate very real human features. That and the big heads and eyes of todays animated characters sell more with children and what animated movies also try to sell is toys.
@dragonsheen3049 Жыл бұрын
it's hard to make realistic characters look good. if the proportions aren't just right, it will look uncanny and creepy. it can also be somewhat limiting from an animation perspective, as the animators won't be able to manipulate the models as dramatically as they could if they looked more cartoony. I think it's also important to consider the fact that when the first Shrek came out, it was one of the first 3D animated movies ever made (released in 2001. Toy Story was the first 3D animated feature film, and was released in 1995). The medium was still very young and artists were still learning what worked. Also, cartoon characters are easier to market for toy sales.
@saph100 Жыл бұрын
To add to that Shrek was actually being made IN 1995 and took much development because they wanted Shrek's body shape to fit an actor like Mike Myers, especially after Chris Farley had passed away. You can find the early designs of Shrek online with some models from 1998 that were closer to the Shrek we know today.

This time, Shrek was indeed the hero saving her from the castle on his trusty steed, from the dragon (Fairy God Mother) who happens to be dressed in red.

I have so many good memories with this scene and the one that always sticks out is when the girls of the Footloose cast in high school were jamming out to this before a show. We were all getting ready, the Ariel was helping me do my hair (Still miss them), and one of the girls pulled out her Beats pill and said, "Hey who's holding out for a hero?" And started playing this version of the song we were all singing along the boys were so confused as to why we were all so energetic.

This was masterfully done. Perhaps some of Mike Myers best work. This scene pulls together so many classics at once, from 80s music with Bonnie Tyler's iconic song, to tips of the hat to comedic master Mel Brooks and Monty Python, and even going full on geek with the Godzilla tribute. Just amazing to watch as a child, and even more so as an adult when you can piece everything together.

"He's gotta be sure, and it's gotta be soon And he's gotta be larger than life" Shrek was far more than just some ogre in a swamp, he's the reluctant hero everyone saw as a monster. Sorta like how the studio itself didn't believe in the project, and the burnt out employees created a masterpiece out of spite. They were all put on the project as punishment, hoping they would just quit and leave the industry.
