The shards from the shattered ring can be very small and very sharp and can go flying. We place the patient's hand inside of a ziplock bag and attach the pliers on the outside of the bag. This prevents the shards from flying into the crew's or the patient's eyes as well as scattering them around the room. The shards are like slivers of glass and if they fall on the floor or get into the carpet, they may cause a cut to feet or babies knees when they crawl across the floor days/weeks later. It also makes for a convenient storage container if the patient wants to hold onto the ring for sentimental reasons, or needs them to return it to the manufacturer for replacement. The retailer I bought my Tungsten Carbide wedding band from will replace the ring for free if it needs resizing or is ever damaged. They also sent some samples to me so I could host a hands on class to my fire crews. Thanks for the video guys. Stay Safe!

Thank you so much for this! Just had a tungsten ring issue in the ED, was able to get it off but was curious what my options would be if I couldn’t.

Recommendation: take the frame out from around the video so you can see better what's being taught. Also getting somewhere without the background dispatch would make it better to hear.

Thanks for the feedback. The frame was necessitated due to the size of the video. The value of the information in the video was determined to be of greater importance that the quality, in this case. Noted on the audio.

That seems much safer than the "1/4 turn at a time, clamp it on, take it off, and try it again" technique. I'm gonna have to see if I can find an eyelet style screw for mine.

I do wear a tungsten wedding ring, I knew it was easy to break because I dropped my first one before and it broke into 3 pieces, thank you so much for this informative video. PS. I appreciate your efforts very much but it was really distracting trying to hear what you were saying while someone was pushing traffic on the radio.

Are there any recommendations for excessive swelling prior to our arrival with this technique?

Would have to ask Mark and the team. Hope to have a reply for you.

From Mark @plvulcanfiretraining: "You can try to soak the finger prior to using the rubber band method or a Ring Rescue Device. Cracking the ring is generally a last resort."
