Tuning Gives Nissan Datsun 280-Z An Extra 220 Horsepower! | Fast N’ Loud

When Richard Rawlings gave the Gas Monkeys crew 4 weeks to customise and tune a 1975 Nissan Datsun 280-Z in time for the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, they were worried the car wouldn’t be finished in time. But with their hard work and perseverance, they manage to complete the build and the only thing left to do is tune the motor to achieve over 300 horsepower.

I had a 1971 240Z with a 280Z motor & trans running 9:6:1 compression pistons with a turbo off of an old Corvair that spit out 20lbs of boost and I got 525 HP with a side draft weber. Yes I had to run methanol with my 93 octane fuel to keep from detonating to high heaven, but man that car was fun.

The goal of this build was to keep it true to Nissan. They were not putting a Toyota motor in it. Personally I hate the idea of putting a 2jz in a Datsun

@Sergio Aguirre I own a 240z with 200 hp believe me 400 is plenty for a car with originally 180 hp and with extra turbo pressure and boost you will not get the same reliability . That was my original post I would rather have less hp and get more reliability. Thats what I said . The car wasnt designed for 400 hp So you stop you Hp snob

@Sergio Aguirre he’s not wrong every engine has a limit no matter how many parts u have on it The engine in the datson wasn’t design to hit 400 hp look what happen to the car they push the limit what he was trying to say is he rather have a reliability datson with less hp that is not pushing the limit and cause the engine to burn 200 to 300 is fine but 400 is to much

It’s a Z car. Z cars come with the L series motor. GTR comes with the RB. Let’s please keep it that way everyone. I owned a Z from 1995 till last year when the lady at the end of the block decided to total my reason for living at 3am drunk. If I hadn’t of gotten 3 times what I originally paid for it I’d still rather have my mfing car back. She was a beast too. I planned to die and then sell that car. Little bit of info for those whom have made a smart purchase of an original Z. There’s a perfect exhaust combo out there but most fail. It shouldn’t sound like a Kawasaki with a tweaked Vance and Hines. I know because I had it. Car was heard well before arrival. L28’s love to run at high rpm. Last ride was too Louisiana and back and every idiot with a new mustank had to try and be cool in front of the grownups. Also, the old factory exhaust system was seriously heavy so, less is good. Ditch the 80 pound folding spare tire too. Oh, and please replace the old rear shocks unless you want a gas leak. Plus it puts the car back like it should stand with a high booty. A good engine will let ya know if they’re shot. You’ll need good shocks with that torque monster. Automatics are a waste of your time. Don’t buy one. I trust a z car with a lot of miles more than I do with one that has very little. Drive it like ya stole it and they won’t break. Baby it and the shit won’t start unless you were wise and parked on a hill. Hand brake loose? Just back up when pulled to tighten it. Trust me, it’s a hearth attack when it’s moved from where ya parked it last. It happens more than one would of liked.
