Tuning Up Daiwa 7HT Mag For Longer Casting, Stage 1 & 2

PS I mentioned that underneath the circlip there should be a metal washer, then the spring retainer. This is not correct I was getting mixed up with something else. There should just be the circlip, then the spring retainer, then your 1mm plastic washer (if doing mod), then the spring.

You can take that blue ring height down to 5mm for field work, ideally you'll know somebody with a lathe and get some made. Soak the ring holder in some warm water and the ring will pop off easily, just superglue the new one on. Great video

Cheers. You still casting? Dont see your name on any result sheets recently. I cant even remember what height mines at been ages since i done it. 6mm was it in the video? Ive a rocket 6500 i use for 175 now instead but use the mag from time to time for practice good retrieve from the sea.

@@djrmonix hey pal, I've not cast on grass since 2013, I was hoping to attend a few events this year but good old covid has screwed that up, hoping next year will be doable. The 7HT Mag is a great reel out of the box for angling.

Think we cast together 2010 or 2011 uksf. Havent been back since never seem to have the time or money to go over regularly from northern ireland. Yeah might pick up a couple more 7ht mags used. I bought 5 brand new 7ht turbos for 100 quid each bout a year ago and sold em all for profit. Wish id have kept a pair ffs.

Hi mate, great video, i was just wondering what would be the outcome if you just sand down the blue collar and not put in a washer? Would it still speed up the spool, or do you have to add that washer?

Hi. A question for you: which is the proposal of the two red plastic bloqs? I removed them of my reel and i didn't have any problem. I think they add weight to the spool when it runs

They push the blue collar into the magnets. Without them there would be little to no braking. Im surprised you were able to cast it with no problems!

Really top notch vid would you say these upgrades would put the reel on a par speed wise with say a qtc 6500 the millionaire would certainly sit as low.

Thanks Norm. Yeah I would say the difference is neglible esp on the heavier leads. The 7ht is perfect for 200 & 175 in my opinion. Probably 150 too but the spool is a tiny bit bigger and heavier than an abu 6500 spool so the abu might have the slight edge for the 150g in 0.31mm. Overall too I think the 7ht they are a nicer reel, looks modern and is nice and smooth. Now if only they made smaller versions like a 5500 or a 5600 for the lighter leads 125 & 100g. The QTC frames still sit a fraction lower but barely noticeable. QTC actually do (or did) a frame for 7ht mag. With these 2 mods done it runs really free, however I do find if I am practicing casting out to sea even on max there isnt quite enough braking with a full spool so if someone decides to do both mods it would become a dedicated field reel.

I would use a pair of needle nosed pliers to get clip back in .

The st spools are very fragile especially around the lip a bit of corrosion and it will chip away very easily. £70 is what daiwa quoted me to replace it. Lovely reel though

Not too sure, have a look on ebay for 1mm thick washers. Doesnt need to be plastic, can be metal too. 5mm hole is what you need from memory.

Are the Abu reels better for casting?

Generallly i think they are. Spin better, lighter spools etc. 7ht good for bigger leads though

@@djrmonix Which Abu reels would you recommend for lighter weights? Or which Daiwa would you recommend for lighter weights. Up to 4oz would be ideal

Abu 5500 a good size although you can go snaller easily to a 3600w or 5600 for 3 oz etc

Hi Sure you know more about this than me and this might be a daft question but if you were using it on a setting of 3 before the mods could you not have just turned the setting down further to two, one or even zero ?

I see your point but at setting 1 or 2 there wasnt enough braking at the start. The problem was midway thru the cast and near the end of the cast even with knob turned to 0 halfway thru the cast there was far too much braking. It was the middle of the cast where I needed to free the spool up.

@@djrmonix Thanks for replying so quickly. I should have said too that the video is really clear and it's easy to follow what you are doing. I will certainly try it out with a washer and see how it goes as it is a simple mod and easily reversed. At the end of the day itf it works, it works and why is less important ;-)
