He's not a session musician. A session musician is that unknown guy that just shows up to play on someone's record and is not considered a collaborator on the song. Bruce is a highly acclaimed musician with a long history of releases, and his appearance on someone else's album is a big deal.

So many people miss the line “but don’t you believe them” because he is hopeful. People say “that’s just the way it is“, and he says “but don’t you believe them“ because you can make change. You really need to check out the lyrics. As a hiphop fan I can’t believe you didn’t.

This is the other side of the coin of Bruce Hornsby’s original. Both great songs and both have recognized each other’s talent. …but the thing about Bruce’s version is one line that Tupac left out… “but don’t you believe them…” Bruce encourages change despite everything, it gives hope. Tupac seems resigned to a fate he can never escape - sadly based on his (and others) upbringing.

Lesson learned. When listening to a hip-hop track and you hear actual MUSIC or something that sounds melodic ... it was JACKED. Rap producers make (some, not all) beats. They don't write or play music (with FEW exceptions). And that's just the way it is ;)
