After hearing everyone's take on it, I believe it comes down to the difference between "best" and "favorite." The "best" usually includes records of enormous technical and/or cultural impact. A "favorite” usually leans towards your own personal taste. With that said, is Tupac one of the "best artists" ever? Yes, based on his record sales (approx. 29 million albums sold worldwide), induction into the National Recording Registry, and overall impact in entertainment at the young age of 25. Is Tupac one of my "favorite artists" ever? Yes, because he was at his peak artistically during my most impressionable years growing up. While I prefer to listen to other emcees over Tupac lyrically, I enjoy listening to his work because of his emotional depth.

I am kinda rushing through these comments so i apologise if i don't spell correctly... see i grew up in Africa in the 90s so I watched Rap and Hip hop grew to this state in time... see we loved RAP SONGs because Tupac brought it to us, I rememebr in my highschool days everybody was talking and listening to tupac, even before CDs got to Africa, we were listening and anticipating pac songs. Tupac had no particular type of style, he switches style, can rap and sing. Biggie on the hand has style similar to Heavy D. Tupac died about 20yrs AGO but he made more hit songs than Nas, or biggie did. . . name nas albums and name pac albums then you will see that he stand side by side with nas now despite the fact he died 20yrs ago... anybody that says Pac is not the greatest Rapper of all time, either you were not alive when pac held the mic or you don't know what rap is... even hail mary by pac is still banging the club right now. name biggie sonmg they still play in the clubs...

he is so underated it isnt even funny I am from the Pac generation he was standing for the time and yeah man he was an icon he does deserve to be recognized as a rapper because he was a game changer in the rap game. He has been tried to be wiped out by who I believe killed him supposedly. No rapper of that era beat him out he was far better than anything better. He was a lyrical genius and he did have cultural pull. He was wiped out by people that didn't like the fact that a revolt could have happened. At that time when he died, he was heard of yet not really big and after death he became a household name. He deserves idolation. He deserves remembrance. He deserves retribution. He also deserves to to have people like me who truly care about what he stood for. But no, as far as him not being on any list; thats pretty wack. From what I learned about this debated THUG LIFE the way he tried to discuss it, was not the was the beureaucrats saw it. My opinion, Jay Z belongs nowhere on any list, and neither does Kevin Gates, but the difference between Kevin Gates and Jay Z; Kevin has more pull I feel. Jay Z has always seemed a shady character to me. So yeah, I agree, your influence depends on what you feel, and I didnt also start listening him til he made keep ya head up. I think tupac could have been more if people actually gave him a chance he wasnt aweful

He started off as MC NY, but he came of age in the Bay.That's where he shedded "poindexter" wide eyed side and really got introduced to game....the grind..the hustle. Oakland made him less gullible.The lame go there to die.You gotta have some gravity about yourself in order to survive out there. I think it gave Pac a unique perspective.He saw the game from multiple viewpoints.His music can't be duplicated. I still LOVE Pac. When asked who is my fave rapper, it is still him. How can anyone compare Pac going platinum to MC Hammer going platinum? Hammer wasn't trying to rap like anyone else, he was a dancer and a hype man imo. This debate was lop-sided. Pac was an MC like DeShannus said. He is forever in my top 10. He didn't even go to jail before the Bishop role. And even The Game was a male stripper. Don't try to call him out on that because he had to dance in order to make money and to promote himself and network to get his foot In the door. As far as his thug life mentality he had to have that in order to survive in Marin City. The hell was he talking about? And the guy that says overrated legend, How the hell was his story telling basic? Listen to White Man'z World or Hold Ya Head. Even Hellrazor!!!!! Wtf are you talking about? Those songs are the most lyrical damn songs on this Earth

Puff advised B.I.G. To chill when Tupac struck at him with the disses, it was only til' PAC did "Hit Em Up" where B.i.G. wanted to get at him for mentioning Faith and etc. When PAC died I remember B.I.G. did a interview where he mentioned that whatever beef he and PAC had was over and done with and he just wanted peace between The East and West, that it should have never came to death, wish they could have met up and squash the beef. The industry, media. Record companies profited off the beef but the fans, friends and family lost two great artists and men in Hip-Hop. Beef should NEVER come to Blood, let it stay on Wax. #RIPTUPACBIG

Exactly! People always skip over this part of history. It's shame these two legends had to die over nonsense.

He's only overrated in your own mind.Pac's the biggest hip hop icon there is.The Bob Marley of rap.It's deeper than technicalities/multi's/metaphors and bars.Pac went beyond that.He had a a level of spirtual/emotional connectivity with people that most artist, no matter what genre, will never be able to match.You gotta be born with a soul like that. Now y'all gone ahead and rationalize your hate.Some niccaz are just to simple to really comprehend Pac.Superficial criteria got em stuck on stupid.

Loved the video, I like how everyone has there opinion an that's cool. But I still don't know why Pac's work ethic wasn't bought up everyone who has worked with him talked work ethic. Pac made the Makaveli 7 day theory in 3 days with further 4 days of mixing, how deep that album goes in the time he wrote it is beyond any rapper no other rapper could do that. Hail Mary, Blasphemy, Against all odds are just some to mention he was growing slowly lyrically too we didn't get to see the full product he was entering his prime. As far as how he would be now like ice cube is wrong. Tupac said in one of his interview 5 years from now god willing I'm alive I swear to u I will be sitting opposite the president. He was going political after deathrow.Thats what makes him a legend because he was for the people the struggle of black America.
@lukmankhan16129 жыл бұрын
btw as I see u are big nas fans check out Nas - survive his tribute to Pac. If your favourite rapper gives out love to another rapper on a song shows he meant something.

+Lukman Khan You're right, Pac's work ethic was crazy. So many musical gems he left behind! I think that's what helps makes him legendary!

If you listen to Pac first album he's lyrical but when he got to death row it was more about war and not rap listen to street fame og song so lyrical
@arnoldstalone36678 жыл бұрын
When he signed to Death Row he gotta do that because he signed the contract which included to release 3 albums for Death Row thats why Pac was working so fast to get out of Death Row word on the street is he recorded around 700+ songs just in 1996. But if you listen to the posthumous albums you can see he was still about to come back with that legendary "Me Against The World" kinda stuff when he was about to get outta Death Row sadly he didnt get outta Death Row even tho he completed the Makaveli album in just 3 days which a lot of people dont even know and they think it was 7 days the truth is he recorded all the songs in just 1 day and the rest took them 2 days.. Pac was a workoholic when he was in Death Row everybody told them stories about him recording minimum of 4-5 songs a day there are even videos on youtube where Pac is mad at people because they fucked up the song and he wanted to got it done in time.. Dude was crazy talented and he was so Real it seems Unreal nowadays.

Nice Debate, there are good points on both sides I was never the tupac stan that alot of people were back then during the thug life era. The whole beaf thing was annoying to me. But I think some of his music is just classic and was good for hiphop. I think for his impact on hiphop culture alone makes him one of the greatest. Songs like I Get Around, I Aint made at you, All about and You Dear Mama can be played at any cookout and everybody would be happy. You can ask your Aunt and Uncle and they'll say 2Pac. They probably don't even know who Common, or Mos Def, or Nas are. That should count for something. He didn't have to always be extra lyrical, he wrote from him prospective and came with good statements and people felt him. When I think of Tupac, outside of the thug persona, I think of Artistry and Poetry. He made some good songs. I think you have you're "favorite MCs", and then you have a VHS tape with Tupac labeled on it. My favorite MCs are Common, Jayz, Mos Def, Taleb Kweli and Nas

I like what @Cheminacci said "Another great debate! Pac is definitely a legend, but greatest all time? No...but that doesn't take away from his accomplishments and influence." 75 million records, great content, etc … Let's break it down more simply - ART is subjective, so Tupac might be a Legend to Person A and not to Person B. Art is meant to influence and to move people, the fact that this amazing debate even occurred (and is so thorough and fun) AFTER Tupac is gone … I think that pretty much sums it up. His work was effective, meaningful, and powerful.

In my personal opinion Tupac is definitely a legend. I think the myth/mystery surrounding his death is overrated. LOL. He is Top 2 with B.I.G. in my opinion. While I agree that PAC lacked in lyrical a little, he was versatile with his topics/subject. For me versatility is key when I judged artists/musicians/rappers. As for Biggie he wasn't versatile in terms of subject matter but I think he would have had he have lived, but he was versatile in terms of his beats/sound. Also B.I.G. Was starting to change his subject matter when he did "Sky Is The Limit". Also the reason Biggie never got a chance to explore more subject matter was because Puff wanted POP(ular) Hits/Anthems instead of more in depth songs. Back to PAC he was a Gemini (zodiac sign) which is a twin sign which would describe PAC dual personalities, how he would be cool, philosophical one minute and then be Thug Life the next.

I know I'm late on this, but I'm a say this I'm on team pac ain't all that here's why I still listen too his songs he has passion, emotion, hunger in his voice. now, that carries him to energetic performance really passionate way too get crowd moving. being lyrical is a testament to show u got skills pac besides ( trouble some 96, Holla if u get me) that he's incapable of doing it. if there wasn't lyricism in hip-hop everyone will copy pac style of rap. but, he's the most influential figure in hip-hop/ music history . people who say he's best ones that haven't heard of Nas,rakim etc... he made important music way some people sway otherwise it almost like he's became a messiah where it's unfair too criticized just because they're dead or they've accomplish a region of fans. but, yeah nothing too wash his achievements but I don't think he's god MC as bunch of people say.

He didn't start selling big till he joined death row and started beefing with rappers like biggie. Than his 4th album out of nowhere sells 9million. So just 1 year after his 3rd album sells 1.5million. His 4th album magically sells 9million. 2pac was overrated!!!!!!!!! He was all hype. Also he was a Studio Gangsta. He was from new york. He was a back up dancer. Went to acting school. He lied in 90% of his rhymes.

Cats be like "Pac aint have lyrics" then argue that a bum rapper like naS or Biggie had bars. They just expose themselves. Whenever anyone says Illmatic is lyrical miracle I know they dont understand lyrics. Illmatic is about as basic as it gets. And to pretend Scarface is a lyricist and Pac isnt is assinine. Correct, naS has never changed his flow. I'm a Pac stan and can admit he's not the best, but that is compared to Reasonable Doubt Jay or Lupe Fiasco. But naS? Scarface? Come on. I literally been waiting 20 years for anyone on any format to quote a single dope naS bar. A single one. No one has ever done it.

Tupac is the greatest rapper ever but he’s not the greatest lyricist rapper pac meant more to black culture than any other rapper in history also pac shooting the white cops in defense of a black man and throwing up the middle finger at the cameras after getting shot at quad studios made Tupac a folk hero to my generation of young black peoples growing up in the 90’s after that he just seemed more real and authentic to any other rapper and people miss that those incidents greatly enhanced him in American black culture and in turn enhanced him worldwide also
