when I lived in Catonsville, 30 years ago, I was so happy to be near this place that Cheryl had lived - if you hear the lyric, "and the fields are all 4 lanes..", the whole song is about where she grew up, and MOSTLY about her family's place and her father. I was in the seats when she sang this song one night, in the local coffee house (which was a large church hall), and she introduced it as written for her father for his birthday (thus "76 Septembers"). The song is a killer ballad, but that night her father stood up, in the middle of the room, and blew her a kiss... She must have cried; we all did. 🧡

I'm in Lawrence, Kansas, and graduated from LHS with Joanne Gardner--what a shock to hear all this. I first heard you on KANU playing live, "Sylvia Hotel," probably on that trip--32 years ago. I was hooked from that moment. So happy to run onto this ancient interview.

Unparalleled. I have some major artists that I truly love, who each have maybe two or three songs that I consider to be genius-level. Cheryl Wheeler, though, probably has 10 or 20 such songs.
