Puccini’s final opera is an epic fairy tale set in a China of legend, loosely based on a play by 18th-century Italian dramatist Carlo Gozzi. Featuring a most unusual score with an astounding and innovative use of chorus and orchestra, it is still recognizably Puccini, bursting with instantly appealing melody. The unenviable task of completing the opera’s final scene upon Puccini’s sudden death was left to the composer Franco Alfano. Conductor Arturo Toscanini oversaw Alfano’s contribution and led the world premiere.

I believe the libretto for Turandot was written by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni, and not by Franco Alfano as the description states.

Where does Puccini’s music end and Alfano’s begin? Is the breaking point within this clip?

Puccini's final completed music (fully orchestrated) was Liù's death and funeral cortège, which takes place before this clip begins. He left behind some sketches for further parts of the libretto, though.

The enunciation of "Amor!" by Ms Sutherland here isn't very good. Other sopranos are distinct and clear even while reaching the high note. I was taken aback. Sutherland was not a Puccini singer (only performed concert versions of Tosca with Gobbi) but was able to do a decent Turandot on recording. She sounds like she's saying 'a-ma-aa!' lol Still good though.

This finale was composed by Alfano, not Puccini

Alfano used 36 pages of Puccini's sketches, some very complete. The following passages are Alfano's invention: the 8 measures before rehearsal 39, Turandot's aria (Puccini only wrote the first 5 measures of Del Primo Pianto), and everything from rehearsal 49 to the end are all Alfano, mostly based on Puccini's own music from earlier in the opera. Also, the music at rehearsal 41 and 43 is derived from an untexted sketch by Puccini (but in D flat.) Puccini left other sketches that Alfano could have used but didn't in either of his versions. And though it's not well known, Alfano had the librettists rewrite the text for all the passages that Puccini didn't leave sketches for.

barely. I believe this is the butchered Toscanini version. it's worth listening to the actual complete original Alfano ending. It makes so much more sense musically.
