Your videos are great! I just got your region chip in the mail today and slapped that bad boy in! My PC Engine Duo is now a beast! I bought a pretty cheap busted PC Engine Duo from eBay awhile ago that I had to recap, I added your power switch blue LED mod as well, it looks great built into the power switch itself. The chip was perfect, it made region modding it a piece of cake!

pretty slick little board you made there. i agree with you on the mod in general. it is very stressful to cut those pins, it just feels so wrong. i honestly don't even know why people would do a region mod anymore for how bad this could potentially end up. i think a Turbo Everdrive is a smarter solution than doing the mod. that being said, when the mod is all said and done and working, it is pretty cool to have a Duo that can do it all.

What type of bevel tip are you using for drag soldering? Is it a standard bevel tip or a special one with a tiny hole that acts as a reservoir for the solder?

JBC c245-939, nothing special no reservoir.

My suggestion for connecting the nine staggered pins from the region switch board to the motherboard connections where the hucard data lines were removed: 1: solder the nine replacement pins to the motherboard. Make them significantly longer than needed. 2: Align the region mod board to the replacement pins. The extra length on the pins may be bent as needed to run the pins through the holes one at a time. 3: Once all nine pins are in place, slide the region mod board down the length of the pins. (As the board reaches its desired position you will then need to slide it over the HuCard connector pins as well.) Solder them on and trim away the excess length. I think that will be much easier than putting the board onto the connector and dropping the pins through the region mod board one by one. ...Though somebody else suggested pin headers, that'd probably work even better. :)

I cut the pins a little higher towards the cart so I didn't have to replace them. This way they are just long enough to reach the board. Thanks for a cool product.

it would be slick if you could slide that ribbon cable under that card slot, between it and board, and mount the switch in the finger cutout under huecard slot.

Great job! I wonder if you could use single pin headers instead of those resistor / cap legs there, just to give them more support - not sure if they would be too thick. It would certainly make them easier to solder I think. Really loving your channel - look forward to the next vid ;) Nice job on the PCB, very tidy and well thought out. I am sure v2 will be perfect.
@GameTechUS
@GameTechUS 10 жыл бұрын
Support isn't an issue since there are so many of them and as long as the mobo is on a flat surface the component legs shouldn't fall far enough through to be too much hassle, though I agree a header of the right height and layout would make it easier still. They would need to be about .5" tall or more from mobo, not including on down through mobo to the bottom side solder pads, and .1" spacing or course... Come to think of it there is such a thing and possibility to use here, what are they called though? Board to board pin headers? Like on the CDX... Anyways, I'm always open to suggestions if you find something useful.

Love it. This may be a dumb question, but if one were to acquire a PC Engine Duo, would this mod work for that too?
@GameTechUS

Yup, just have to ground pin 29 of the 6280.
@krillin63
@krillin63 8 жыл бұрын
Your work is fantastic. I would like to offer a suggestion though. After using flux or soldering at all you should try using a small horse hair brush and some rubbing/denatured alcohol. ;) This will remove the flux and make it look nice. an added benefit is that the flux over time can gather dust and start conducting...
@HokusaiXL
@HokusaiXL 8 жыл бұрын
I just finished installing the release version of this into my PC Engine. Like he says in another video, you don't have to lift Pin 29 on 6280, just jump it to ground. But while it was a bit of a challenge for me because of my poor excuse for a soldering iron tip, this kit was stupid easy to install and works absolutely amazingly.

GameTechUS - I suspect your PVM might just have a dodgy cap on the neck board for the Green channel? I've seen the colour return a few times (when kevtris was there, and on this vid), and looks like the sort of fault a cap would cause. Can sometimes be the driver transistor too, or more likely just a dry solder joint. I know you have spare monitors for testing, but would be great to see a tear-down and repair of the PVM. :) What model is the PVM btw? Could probably find a service manual for it.

Also, using some super glue accelerator could save you a lot of time when gluing down that switch. Just put the switch in place with some glue, squirt on some accelerator, and the bond will immediately be strong enough to hold it in place for the remainder of the curing time.

GameTechUS Yeah it's really handy stuff. The one I've used is Zap's "Zip Kicker", though I expect others work basically the same. (search for "CA accelerator" and you'll get various off-the-shelf and DIY solutions)

Scope-Eye video I did some research and simple baking soda is an accelerator! NICE!
@tetsujin_144
@tetsujin_144 10 жыл бұрын
GameTechUS Yeah, I actually thought about mentioning the baking soda trick, but figured it'd turn up in a search... I just recently started using it myself. I can put some baking soda on a part then drop some CA on, and I'll have a solid block in a few seconds... Or I can apply the CA then add on some baking soda to accelerate it. I initially started using it because I wanted a solid filler, not so much to accelerate the CA. (Adding different materials to CA, like talcum powder, corn starch, or glass microballoons makes a tacky goop that cures into a nice, strong, carveable solid) - but baking soda's tendency to accelerate the CA leaves no work time in the "goop" state, so it's pretty different from the talcum mix I often use. Beats holding that switch in place for a minute, eh?

Those pins look fairly flexible - did you consider desoldering them with a desoldering gun and pulling/bending them out of the unsoldered holes, instead of cutting them? ( i know it sounds like a bit of a pain in the ass, but at least it is reversible)

Do you know if it's possible to still use the old composite cabe, even after the mod? I'm getting a modded Duo, but won't have the cash to get the Framemesiter for another couple of months and I was still hoping to play the system. Will it still work? Thanks

I didn't have any luck with this mod on a Duo-RX. Japanese games work fine but when I try a US game (with the switch set to US of course) I get a white screen. It acts as if the chip wasn't there. Currently trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Does the mod chip rely on the timing of the ram chips? I'll be grateful for any hints.

why dont you boat or build an everdrive board with the region mod on it instead of killing the base pins on the slot adapter? if you place it after the game sd card, region still gets read in at the right time.

I doubt it's something you can test, but do you think the Arcade Card will fit with that switch there? It's kinda thick.
@GameTechUS
@GameTechUS 10 жыл бұрын
Uhh the thick arcade card is the pro and that's only needed on the tgcd type non super systems, only the regular size arcade card duo is needed on the duo. However, I have a street fighter 2 champion edition that's thicker than most but not as thick as some of the pirate hu's, which I no longer have any of. It had way more than enough clearance and looks like even the much thicker ones would clear, plenty of left to right clearance, the switch lever doesn't come out super far...

Hey Jason, ran into a problem (sorry for posting this on your region mod video). So I bought a broken PC Engine Duo off of ebay, did a recap and some deep cleaning along with a bit of reflowing and got it up and running. Downside is that the cd part of it doesn't work, I threw in the cd assembly from my Turbo Duo and it didn't work in it either. The really strange part is that it reads that the cd lid is always down (I even removed the pin switch for the lid and it did the same). When the cd drive assembly is in it and I hit start it says it's trying to read it and never errors out, however, the eye/motor etc don't make any movement. I do know that they are getting power because when you flick the power switch on the eye and the spindle jump ever so slightly. Any insight would really be helpful. Side note: The cd assembly from the PC Engine works fine when I tried it in my Turbo Duo so it has to have something to do with the main board. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHe5e6yKaJlgi8k

I'm tearing my hair out trying to figure out why my install isn't working. It will play JP games just fine, but when I try a US game it just gives a solid color. Tried multiple games, re flowed the whole Hu card connector, and even tried different switches I had. I counted an double counted making sure I was clipped the right pins too...

I wonder if this eradicates the glitchy load-ups of games for the Turbo Everdrive. Luckily, my US Duo has very short wires and a small chip based region mod board from grahf on the PCEngineFX forums from 2007. It does load some games glitched up a little, and I have to just reload the games once in a while. It sucks when there isn't a single glitch until you get to the 2nd or 3rd stage of a game like Soldier Blade, lol.

I know this is an old video but had anyone made a version of this mod with pin headers to attach to the cut pins? It seems the only problem I might run into, would be soldering all those pins so close to each other.

Pin headers? You mean sockets? No, they don't make them that close together as far as I know. As far as soldering, it just takes practice and patience.

I agree, just a thought. Could defo look a bit bodge as I don't think it would melt square if you know what I mean. I think it would bevel the front edges and that would look poor! EDIT! or bevel the rear depending on which way you pushed it through. ;)
