Most of the issues you're having aren't because its a GTi into a normal up! - they are because its a facelift car going into a pre-facelift. For instance the mounts are larger for crash purposes, the pump is different to allow more flexable amounts of ethanol, the loom is different to allow for the extra bits and bobs you can get on the later cars and so on. I don't know if you guys go the facelift over there but if you did you could have saved yourselves a lot of hassle.

I never cut in the middle or top, but just an inch or so from the top in a smallish slit in the center of the pack. That's the best of both worlds.

It just occurred to me that your Up (like all Aussie Ups) is the OG and that VW didn't introduce the GTI until the Up's first refresh in 2016, which would explain all the silly little unexpected differences like the top of the fuel pump assembly, slightly different key barrel etc.

You don't need to swap the key barrels to make this work, just swap out the RFID chips inside the keys. If you have the GTI Cluster, ECU, and RFID chips (in the key), then the IMMO will be happy.

all 3 control units have to match up. each computer checks eachother before it lets the ecu run the engine.

@@someidot3699 You are correct, but the Immo in the cluster is just looking for the correct RFID in the key, the metal key is just a mechanical lock for the steering column.

You may already know all this, but if not, I hope it helps: There are two PR codes regarding Up gearboxes. PR-0EA: MQ100 5-speed found in the non-TSi Up. Reverse gear is right and down. PR-0EM: MQ200 5 and 6 speed found in the TSi and GTi Up. Reverse gear is left and up. To fit an MQ200 box to an Up that came with an MQ100, you would need: Selector mechanism: 1S0 711 049 A Relay lever: 1S0 711 202 B Front gearshift lever: 1S0 711 046 B And if you didn't get the Up GTi gearknob: 1S0 711 113 ACNVL The engine and gearbox mounts also appear to be different, so let me know if you need those codes.

For soldering, you will get a much better connection if you apply the iron to the workpiece, and then the solder to the workpiece. Applying solder to the iron and letting it drip on the wire like that will result in fragile cold solder joints. You could also add a Western Union splice for a super strong mechanical connection.

We used to have this dance with people back in the day with DSM cars (Mistubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon) here in North America. People would buy an NA car and ask what it would take to turbo their NA car. The answer was always "sell the NA car and buy a turbo car, it's easier". Not the same situation you're in as you can't get a turbo UP but the amount of work is enormous!

Speaking of dash pad removal, from 1982 to 1986 I worked at a GM dealership parts and service department as assistant Service Manager and Service Writer. A customers dash pad was faulty and had to be replaced, not a favor task for the technicians. Could not get one to complete commit to the project, so I in-between all my other duties attempted to complete the task. Several technicians offered help but always left for more profitable work orders. It took me a week to finish the task, the customer was very gracious and patient. The reason behind the unwillingness tocimmit to the task was of course, money. In case you don't know warranty repairs are notoriously under estimated by the manufacturer, no diagnostic time is included and the technicians they use to perform tasks have all needed tools set out for them, parts to replace waiting at hand and they are told the specific task to be done. The estimated time for a repair is determined by the time used by the test situations. Third party labor used a more real life based system. The result is that the pay rate for the technicians can be half or less of the actual time to correct handle the repair. Yea it's follow the money!

Same. MCM got me through some nas times the last couple years. Been an amputee since 05. Lost jakf that foot in the second one. Ended up a double a touch over 2 years ago. Above the knee. The guys kept me laughing, instead of crying, and their projects inspired me to keep going. And Moog's video was the motivation to get the 650 out, and get back on the steeet again.

So i might be wrong about this, but the cluster you got didnt look like a gti one, nor did the engine cover + the gti is supposed to come with a 6 speed. What i think happened it that you got a up tsi engine, which was also an option allthough they never sold a lot of them. Possibly it also only has 95HP instead of 115.. i'm not sure but it might be worth looking into it

6C/R Polo 5 speed linkages would fit as it’s the same gearbox, you could even use the 6 speed box too, if the Polo is sold down there.

This engine was in so many VW products, even my grannies Golf 7 has this engine with the 6 speed. Probably easy to source, I think they are the same. The golf revs slower at the same speed as my Up GTI but that is probably due to the smaller wheels on the Up.

These are all the reasons why we didn’t do the same on ours. It was actually easier to put the 1.8L turbo engine in. The subframe swapped straight in so we got 5 stud conversion at the same time and better suspension with disk rotors all round no more drums. Can’t wait to see this one finish tho, we need a race ❤

Please please please please please get the 6-speed. I have driven a lot of up!'s from 60hp NA to the 90hp turbo to the GTI and power-wise the TSI and GTI are not far apart. What really sets the GTI off is the close-range 6-speed compared to the suuuuper long economy gears of the TSI and lower-end models. It alone is the reason I absolutely fell in love with the platform and I constantly think of buying one as a little track car.

I have the GTI and for the track I'd recommend the 90hp version tuned to GTI spec or higher. Probably cheaper than the GTI, I love mine but I still feel like I overpaid... Only real difference would be the exhaust valves, the 115hp version of the 1.0 gets sodium filled exhaust valves to manage heat. It also gets a particulate filter but for track use you'd rip that out anyway lol. Plus the 5 speed can handle more power than the 6 speed iirc.

Okay. The zip tie mention got me thinking about something. Strangest thing you have ever used on to field fix. My old one qas, a laceration. Hog hunt. Buddy caught a slicer, deciding to check the pig a bit too soon, snd it swiped used it's tusks. Hour to the truck, and another to the closest ER. Zipped it, walked out, my shirt wrapped around it. Field dressing at the truck, and get treatment. Then. Last Tuesday said, hold my beer. Unlocking tab snapped off the socket of my prosthetic, 20 miles from civilization. Can't ride with your knee locked straight. Socket and knee have a ghud ring setup. Just big enough for a small zip tie to fit. Pulled one out of my jacket's vent mesh, inserted, and set it. Still holding, but I need to replace the slider for the lock. Unlocked knee on uneven ground, added to comprpmised balance, on an uneven surface Is a fall waiting to happen. See my prosthetist next friday. And no. I wasn't on an ATV. Was riding my 1977 YZ 125, 2 stroke. Wife had the Suzuki SP 400. Set 2 as my goal the day after my trans femoral of the right leg. Like with Moog's recent sucess at his first major competition, I knew the easy way. No sweat. Almost anyone can ride a trike. I set the one most people I know said can't be done. Because even I had doubts. For me that is a motivater. The ones that matter had faith in me. So did I. I didn't think I can. I Knew I Will. I'd love to hear y'alls.

I once had a friend who replaced the taillights on his Golf r32 with led ones. That made the car go in to limp mode, and the four wheel drive stopped working, because he replaced the rear lights.. VW simplicity my male donkey. I had to help him solder resistors onto the cabling to trick the ECU into thinking it still had regular lights on the back. Good work pulling through though boyos. Love the UP GTI. I've personally wanted the Lupo GTI for years. Sadly they're even more rare than the UP one.

Had an up for several times as a workshop replacement while my Golf was there for inspection. The workshow often started the talk with "we are sorry, we only have a VW Up! for you" and my reply always was "I am very happy to get one". I really enjoyed every minute driving this gokart-like small whirlwind. Even as an N/A it is a blast. And the 3-cylinder sounds a bit like a Porsche boxer engine. The Up! is a really good car and it's a shame Volkswagen dumped it these days only for price reasons.

I had an up for a number of years, it was the best car I've ever owned hands down, it coped an absolute hiding and took it on the chin every time. NEVER let me down. It was so low I couldn't get over the joining plates on the roof of shopping centres. And scrapped alot. I sold it for a Turbo Forester and still to this day wish I'd never sold it. I had planned to turbo/import a GTI Engine. Would own another in a heartbeat if I had the chance.

I had the UP TSI and they map pretty much the same as the GTI, obviously main things are the gearbox brakes, (I was told fuel pump is different too by my tuner) I stage 3 my UP TSI and got to 180bhp Forge Motorsport intake and BOV RACING Line Turbo Elbow Full Milltek turbo back exhaust Hybrid turbo Fitted APR coil packs too I honestly felt stage 1 was best for me, stage 3 was mapped so the boost builds (so got a bit of lag) stage 1 was so much more fun but didn’t have that top end boost it had at stage 3, I’d definitely recommend fitting the bigger GTI brakes if you ain’t done that already as my brakes got hot quickly, I had EBC brakes and pads fitted too, you Will definitely have loads of fun, also shock a good few cars on the road, cannot wait to see the build, highly recommend JBS in the UK for advice too as they are the go too guys in the UP for these 👌🏼✌🏼

At one point in time Car and Driver tried turning a Mazda 5 into a Mazdaspeed 5, which if memory serves went about the same as this Up project is, including the full disassembly of the car to replace the wiring loom. I can't wait to see how this turns out!

Just a heads up (get it?), there is a facelift version of the up, which I think your gti parts are- and the bumper support bar is different- the tow eye is in a different place. It looks like you’ve used the facelift support which might not align with the tow eye on your bumper cover. Probs not a massive issue but might flag up in scrutineering when at the track!

As a VW Up GTI owner, one mod I recommend is a limited slip diff! At least with the stock tires that come on the GTI I have massive traction issues at stock power. As soon as the weight is slightly off center or the road is damp, one wheel peel is all that I get. Some guys on the UK Up forum got Quaife to make some custom ones for the Up but they don't sell them anymore. Would be cool to get them to make some again, because I would really really want one!

vw wiring really changed about the time the mk4 cars came out. mk3 and prior had about 8 small wiring looms that all spiderwebbed out from the fuse box under the dash. all the fuse panels were identical, and they would just put the loom in place that matched the options your car had, such as the headlight loom that also has fog lights. things for modding and building really went downhill during the mk4 era. thats why ill stick with my 90s models as the newest cars ill ever own. also in a vw, brown is ALWAYS a ground, the color of dirt.

Reminds me of the one BMW project I've done past an E36, BMW tech wise. E91 Wagon that we only got as 328i's converted to a 335i by swapping over a Sedan. And by that I do basically mean the entire sedan was required to be swapped over. We ended up stripping them down to nothing and basically just swapping out everything possible over from the donor. The only bimmer I have left is an E31 roller I swapped a Toyota 1UZ + procharger into. That's probably the most reliable BMW I'll ever own and will probably be the last BMW I'll own too.

Tip on the fuel pump hanger gaskets... put it on the tank then put the pump assembly in. It's a pain in the butt to get it to seat right if you put it on already around the assembly.

I 1000% get the allure to a small, simple, light, car that keeps all of the purity but still gives it the ability to punch waayyy above it's weight class in fun and performance.

when i went from 5speed to 6speed on my mazda 3 i was surprised to learn that the synchro mesh assemblies were more robust on the 6 speed because it was built for the larger load. i found that out because i blew the synchros out on several gears in my 5 speed driving it like a maniac, and those extra friction cones came in handy. your mileage may vary.

As most of you know the VW UP! platform Is manufactured at the Bratislava factory in Slovakia. Along side with the models on the shared SUV platform VW Touareg, Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne, Bentley Bentayga Lamborghini Urus etc. After my years of working for the vag group I must say in my opinion that what comes from that factory is the high mark of quality when it comes to vag cars. Especially the UP/Citigo/Mii platsform is brilliant in quality!

Moog - With a problem in the fuel pump of my Merc A160, I removed it and replaced the same piece of hose with a similar type of hose as you have done. It burst at about 2000km as the high octane petrol had turned the outside rubber to jelly leaving the internal membrane unsupported. I hope you have better luck or you'll get stuck on the road as I did! Good luck!

I would love to do the same thing with my boring old 2018 Mazda 3 and swap in the AWD 2.5 turbo gear from the American Mazda 3 that we don't get here in Australia. If car prices keep going the way they are, it might actually be an option.

nice job guys ! not sure about soldering the wires though, soldered joint tend to be weaker and break faster since the wire loses its flexibility on both ends of the soldered joint but best of luck!

@@donotatme agree on the shifter. the p9 cable shifter defenetly isnt Toyotas best efford. but a vw shifter also isnt the best feeling thing on the market. they are also pretty plasticy and / or rubbery feeling. other then that the rev hang on the up is pretty far up there with the worst ive driven. old cable throttle cars just dont have this artificial feeling throttle.

I have an upgraded Mk6 Golf R with an RS4 pump. The shop had to go through the exact same type of fuel pump modifications that you just had to do.

15:31 I think thats what its all about! Alot of people will say that to a specific car, which seems nothing special on the outside. But sometimes it isnt about the fastet or greatest. Its about what you enjoy! Nobody will see 100 or 1000s of hours sunk into a build as you doing it yourself.

I've got a 2016 turbo VW Up, 90hp stock (CHZA engine) with a 5-spd transmission, ECU tuned to about 130hp. It would have been easiest to just buy one of those engines from Europe and swap it in. The GTI has the CHZD engine with a 6-spd. The real differences are a slightly diff turbo, GPF (gasoline particulate filter), sodium filled exhaust valves for better cooling, and more heat resistant steel turbo housing. The GTI engine however has GPF problems and the 6-spd is less durable. The biggest problem with this car is the lack of cooling at higher power levels, the small intercooler is integrated into the intake.

The raceworks pushlock hose in-tank, you might want to revisit that and replace it with some submersible-rated hose, SAE30R10 is submersible rated

I have the 1.0 turbo in my 2022 Skoda Octavia. I think its a great engine, 50 mpg and doesn't sound like a 3 cyclinder engine.

Ick. That soldering..... Twist the wires together first, if you want a strong joint. The wires twisted together creates the joint, the solder holds it there. Probably it will be fine and will last forever, but the solder joint could also crack. Impossible to be sure, but it is sure that you did it wrong.

I did a 2009 polo gti full conversion into my 1988 mk2 golf and surprisingly the wires were pretty much exactly the same colours even to the tail lights lol only difference were the connectors

Definitely try and get the 6spd. For the amount of work going into it, it's worth the extra to get it

Small tip for the next time if you cut a loom to resolder it later: Try to cut all the wires to different lengths. This way you don't have all the solder points in one place and it is way easier to wrap it afterwards. And yes, I'm aware the GTI loom was also cut straight through. But it still is a helpful thing to keep in mind.

I’ve got the same flashlight!! 7:16 in the vid. I love it!!! I use it everyday in my job as a Honda tech. No one can figure out where the power button is lol. Here in the states I got it off the Snap-on truck, and it wasn’t crazy expensive if you can believe it, I think I’ve seen it with other brand names in the catalogs. Cheers 🍻
