If your programming with G code see if you have an option for dwell. On our CNC lathes we use G04 X?? X is the amount of time in seconds. Example if you wanted a 2 second dwell it would read G04 X2.0 or a 1/2 second dwell would be G04 X0.5

I've used both plasma and Ox/Acet for carbon steel and Stainless...carbon was up to 6" thick plate, stainless 1/2"...I always drilled pilot holes, 3/16" split points worked great...$15 for a pack of 12 (PTD cobalt) in an air drill....Cut quality was better, it sure did wonders for extending the life of consumables, piercing is hard on that stuff...even lasers are affected greatly by piercing. The plasma stuff was expensive, and that was a looooong time ago.

Well, I'm out here in N. calif...Western Tool & supply....precision Twist Drill...I've also had good luck with 1/8" black oxide, double ended for body shops that use Cleco clamps, split points drill fast....same deal, pack of 12 cost $7-8...@@turbocobra

I pierce 1" often with 85 using 1.5 sec delay and a long lead in 8 ipm and 60% federate on leadin. slag blows up behind shield as the arc makes it through.

Maybe if you get up into the large high def plasma they can cut 1"decent but from my experience with my powermax 85 it's just not practical. Other than the slow preheat I get far better piercing with oxy and faster than drilling and better edge quality without having to put new consumables in all the time. In the heavy plate oxy can be faster to, I forget what the 85 will do but I just cut some 1 1/4" at 11ipm normally I'll do 12 or 13ipm on 1" with a victor #1 tip. In sheet cam when you select your tool for drilling or cutting next to the drop down menu there's a button with three little dots click on that and it will open a screen to change the settings for that tool and when you close sheet cam you can either save those changes as the default tool or discard if a one time thing.

No it won’t when a plasma torch pierces and there is no material to remove it overheats and the nozzle and electrode start to perish crazy fast and it will deplete your consumable’s faster than normal.

Typically if you swap over to nitrogen when you are cutting at its limit it gains you 1/4”-3/8” on the thickness you are able to cut , but of course the nitrogen isn’t free so that’s the down side

Ramp piercing . Should work. Slow down the ipm. Let it go in cut mode might take 1 or 2 to make it through. Though I run a 200amp set up. Lincoln plasma hypertherm nest program. Auto cad cam. Also manually run running is a great way to find out the capacity of your machine. Awesome video.

Would you recommend the powermax85 for someone starting a metal fabrication business or would the 105/125 make more sense? I have no idea what thickness I might be asked to cut by the customer so I'm having a hard time making the decision.

85 is perfect for just starting out. I rarely get asked to cut 1", mostly 1/2" and below. if your business takes off using the 85, you can always upgrade later

Good problem solving Gary. Maybe next time switch the consumables like what was suggested, run the cut at 3/4 settings but with the increased pierce delay and slower feed rate, start the cut and as soon as the pierce is done stop it manually and step through the g-code to the next hole. I think the post processor for your table does not support the drilling op that you posted in sheet cam, that's why the pierce delay did not work there was no move after the pierce.

use new consumables for 1" thick and run 2 sec pierce delay ... works just fine .... maybe raise piece height a little .... (so that I commented about 1 min into the video .... ) unless you fast forwarded the piercing - that for sure was NOT a 2 sec pierce delay ... my HT 85 has the same issues - "random firing delays" .... you give it 2 sec pierce time ... and sometimes it does and others it does not .... If you want to cut a lot of 1" you need a 105 or 125 .... this is just brutal on an 85 .... although it will hand cut 2" but THAT is a whole different story .... If the torch does not stay on - put your cutter in expanded metal cutting mode even though you are running it on a CNC table ... that way it automatically re fires...

Well its the piercing thats brutal, I have cut a ton of 1" plate on this table, maybe 20-30 hitch plates this year, but this is the first one they wanted the tail light holes done. A few weeks ago I cut 3 sheets of 1" on one set of consumables and it did fine. That one long pierce I tried on this one jacked up the shield, just 1 pierce! Does HTP offer something that will pierce 1" comfortably ?

HTP has one cutter which I have very little first-hand experience with (an hour or so) first impression - it is a good or very good cutter. George has some more experience with it, he really loves it. I will get one here and try it, put it through the paces myself! its 45 amps max output in CNC mode and 55 amps max output in hand cutting mode and its 100% duty cycle at 104F at 45 amps... that means it will cut 1/2" on a table all day long comfortable ... the HT65 is 100% duty at 46 amps ... you are cutting a lot of thick stuff! you really need 100 amps! At this time there is nothing from HTP out there... but seeing how they are developing this new super reliable 1/3 phase autoline power supplies .... I would not be too surprised if there was a 100 amp plasma on the horizon in a year or 2 ... the 1/3 phase 300 amp multiprocess is here already and some other stuff i heard is supposed to be here next year ... no one said plasma yet ... we'll see ...

@@bcbloc02 holes that big are, slow, expensive, and those bits love to break or mess up one of many teeth and chatter and break. Also the drill motor required to turn that slow is thousands of dollars. I’d keep playing with the table. Even a rough cut and die grinder clean up would take way less time. If it were me. I’d pierce with mag drill and cut on table. (He just said this in video)

I effectively did remove the piercing operation when I set a pierce heigh at .08 and no pierce delay. If you mean remove the reference operation, cant really do that, its how the torch finds the top of the plate to have a good starting point to hand off to the THC controller

now thats a thought, not sure, the main issue wiht trying to pierce is if your plasma torch is on, and not pierced through the bottom, all that blowup is really bad on consumables, it will kill it instantly, and the shield as well. So I think its doable, but do i want to blow through several sets of consumables at $15 per set trying to do it? or just grab the mag drill and be done with it lol

yea thats my bad, alot fo times I upload little short clips to facebook and instagram and had my software set on 480 and didnt catch it when this one uploaded. Are you watching on a TV? Most mobile users cant tell the difference between 480 and 720

I don't even think the Hypotherm 105 can pierce 1" plate, I think it has to do some "Wobble Pierce". That software would drive me crazy. The software should understand how to "make it work" without all that rig-a-marole.
