Heavy Duty Lifting Magnet

Continuing the ongoing effort to do a deep dive on the various tools and equipment we use in our metal fabrication and machine shop. This video highlights our heavy duty lifting magnets. These megnets are rated to lift 1300lb each. We use them to lift heavy and light steel sheet and plate. These will lift most things over 3/16". So far we have lifted 1" thick plate with them and did not have any issues.
These magnets are available on ebay in different sizes and ratings and are not terribly expensive for what they do. These will left any ferrous meal, steel, some stainless steel, iron. Plate, tubing, and has sort of a v-block in the center so possibly some round materials as well, but i haven't tried it on that.
We use this to lift plate and sheet steel onto our CNC plasma table.

Hi Gary, I have one of those magnets too. I agree, they work very good unless you try and lift a large sheet that is thin material. Your using the two magnets with the bar are a great idea. Thanks for sharing. Take Care, Reid

The other day I noted some guys working on the sewer system near work and inside the shipping container they had a slide out gantry crane for use over the pit hole during the shift and then it packs away at the end of the shift. I must photograph that arrangement for future reference.

Good tip about bumping the handle, I'm looking at one of these to help with install of a staircase

Plate clamps work well for thin sheets as well as thicker heavier sheets, if you can pick them up vertical. Magnets are great, just never have anything under the steel that you don't mind losing. I've used static magnets capable of lifting 500 lbs and electro magnets that could lift several thousand lbs., either can cause deadly consequences.

I like vacuum pods better. I can lift sheets of aluminum and stainless. As well as 4x8 sheets of wood.

how wide is the crane between the uprights and how big is the I beam on top? I have a woodworking shop and need a way to move sheets of MDF and plywood around.

have you tried lifting 1/8"x4'x8' sheets length ways with your spreader bar? I'm looking for ways to load a sheet onto a burn table end ways. thx

Yea using the 2 magnets wont lift 1/8th very well, its too flimsy. If you bought 6 of the smaller magnets and built a jig to evenly space them across the 4x8 sheet it would probably work good.
