Golf7R IS38-450 Dual ball bearing turbocharger

We have been asked for a turbo that is fast spooling, and responsive enough to provide similar characteristics to the stock IS38 turbocharger form IHI - BUT with the capability to provide enough HP without having to upgrade the fuel system. This turbocharger is the result of months of work, and features a larger AR turbine and compressor housing compared to the stock IHI IS38 turbocharger. The compressor is a forged aluminium piece, and the turbine wheel is a solid disc back design with a dual ball bearing rotating assembly which utilises silicon nitride balls.
The turbocharger is tested and run for around 12000kms so far on 1.8bar gauge pressure with 95octane (South African fuels are more like 90octane) with AEM WMI using a 0.5mm nozzle, TurboDirect S.A Downpipe, Turbodirect S.A Bolt on Intercooler and charge pipe upgrade and no other mods. We produced 480HP on the dyno and the cars using a stock clutch pack. We use GT Innovation tuning, and TCU flash.
The exhaust is 100% stock behind the DP, and the entire intake system including the airbox is stock standard.

Well, looks like I might have a project this winter.. I am curious as to how you are achieving those numbers on stock fueling. Is the North American Fuel system different than SA? Mostly you see safely 400whp over here before you need to upgrade some stuff like HPFP or running a port injection kit. Also with your Water/meth setup, are you running port injection w/m or are you running a nozzle low down for cooling? I have noticed on my own car that I am receiving a slight fueling benefit with 1 nozzle(225cc) post Intercooler but nothing crazy. As for my biggest complaint with other companies Chinese turbos, the casting on your unit looks so much better on the hot side. Is it investment casting? or still Sandcast? My car is used for Motorsport applications, and I have yet to see a IS38 that is dual ball bearing with a nice casting that makes me think it might not crack with repeated abuse. I have been holding out for something robust and well designed, instead of going with the BW EFR solution. Will you be doing a deep dive on compressor maps for this turbo like your other videos? Sorry if I have a lot of questions, but I am genuinely interested.

Europe and some other areas have dual port injectors pfi and dfi. With a good lpfp system you can have stock injectors working on high power setups.

2017 R here, what are your thoughts on cryogenic shaft hardening to reduce axial flex? Do you think this might make your product even more durable than it already is?

Our products are 100% reliable and durable, no requirement for any Cryo or any other "modificaiton". If how ever you are suggesting this as a "solution" to the continued hybrid failures - then i have this to say. The shafts hardness state is not the issue with turbocharger failures 9especially hybrids), its the uneducated "turbo guys" who convert a reliable and durable OEM design into something that its not designed to handle. There is no problem or challenge in hardening the material that shafts are made of, however its outside of specification for the intended application. In fact it takes 13 seconds to harden this type of shaft in a turbocharger application, when using induction hardening, but once again this is outside of specification for the intended application and will not solve anything, nor will Cryo (cryo will make the problem worse - embrittlement) The shaft is designed to flex, and should do so - inside of an operating window/tolerance - changing the material spec/condition will negatively affect this. The reliability and durability of the product starts at the design inception, not by trying to modify an already proven design to work outside of any realistic boundaries. If you design a turbine shaft correctly for the intended purpose, it will last, modifying the rotating assembly and expecting the same reliability without re-designing the shaft - will never last, especially when the rotating assemblies chosen to operate on the tiny OEM size shafts are so large.

How would you compare this turbo to an EFR 6758 with your swirl adaptor? Thinking about either of these setups for a mk3 Audi TT. Would stock rods/pistons handle that with the increased ramp up speed from e85 fueling and sports cat downpipe as well? Looking to make 440-500hp

The 6758 will outflow this specific setup, however the next product video coming soon will be the 550HP capable unit with the same turbine stage, with larger higher flowing compressor. This will compete head on with the 6758, but as a bolt on. The stock motor will handle (reliably) 400-420HP - anymore than this, i would forge the bottom end for sure.

This is exactly what I've been waiting for, I know it just by looking at that actuator. Good to see we can use as much stock peripheral hardware as we please. The dyno numbers I assume are at the crank? Is this the end of development for the 7R or are you planning any iterations on this turbo, like a -400BB?

Many turbo look that same until you open them up - especially the chinese knock off units. From externally castings are copied all over the world, most even copy the original OEM's logos and grind them off after casting. There is alot more to a product than what it looks like from externally. However ALL the IS38 bolt on turbos "look the same"

632.2nm is in the red zone for the Rods in a stock engine for this car. Its only a mater of time unless your lucky or don't push the car.
