I love these videos dude thanks for making them. It's crazy that watching someone mod and solder stuff on KZbin can be so entertaining to me, yet here we are lol.

100% agree with keeping broken hardware. Having donor parts can be invaluable if you're in to repair. The sum of the parts is greater than the whole with old consoles.

I use a ceramic drink coaster when I need to solder something loose like that. I even used it to clean up ChipQuik many times. ;) I like to flood the legs with solder and remove it all a few times without reusing braid in order to get more of the contamination off. You really don’t want and ChipQuik to still be on there. Actually, I reuse the each piece of braid on the board pads and flood those too then use a fresh piece on both when finishing up.

Should be noted that chip quick will destroy the chemistry of lead-free solder, do they shouldn't be used together.
@LIRetroGaming3 жыл бұрын
That’s definitely a technique that I would like to see!

I’ve got a TG-16 with a bad graphics chip. Confirmed it by swapping with known good chips.

Most games show a black screen but some show black and white graphics. Blazing Lazers can loop through multiple demo sequences on a black screen before one in particular shows a few white sprites… including your ship, which wasn’t visible in any of the other demo loops. That means it is related to color pallets or something.

Thanks for this video. I've got a Turbo that is showing nothing but a white screen. I've cleaned the cart connecter and re-capped the board and it still shows a blank white screen, so at least I know it's something beyond my current ability to repair. The only annoyance is that I should have re-capped my other, working, Turbo instead, since I have a TurboNanza coming to me in the mail soon that I want to install asap.

Yeah this one most likely has bad ram
@fenikso Жыл бұрын
@@LIRetroGaming My console showing only white screen is a sign of bad RAM? I thought that it was going to be one of the Hu chips. Is the RAM an off the shelf part, or is it another proprietary chip (or maybe just hard to find)?

Surprised me! I was expecting some junk PC Engine hardware but now that I think about it I also have a junk TG16 in my pile of Turbos (bad graphics chip). Just waiting on a chip donor that doesn’t deserve a donor of its own. ;)

BTW the 6270 is the video display controller (VDC), not the CPU (which is the 6280).

Yeah I realized that after the fact. Sometimes I make mistakes like that because I’m not speaking off of a script

How advanced is this operation? Should someone who's barely able to cleanly solder two wires together or a pin into a board attempt this?
@LIRetroGaming2 жыл бұрын
This is definitely more advanced. I would suggest getting comfortable with soldering first before trying something like this

Nice job! How did you know it was that chip that needed replacing?
@LIRetroGaming3 жыл бұрын
It was a little bit of a guess. I saw the behavior that the everdrive was doing where it would keep boot looping, and I suspected that it was either the CPU or the ram
@amaiorano3 жыл бұрын
@@LIRetroGaming ah okay. I was wondering if there was a way to validate that the CPU isn't working by using an oscilloscope, like seeing if it's outputting data or address values.

Hey bud I got a question. I have a Neo Geo AES cartridge Alpha Mission 2 that is displaying garbled graphics. It's not the contacts and not the system. Through further investigation I opened the cart and found two sets of bridged contacts on two separate chips. I was wondering if this is the reason for why I'm getting graphical glitches in the game? The funny thing is the only screen that shows up clear with no issues at all is the weapon armor select screen which works totally fine. Everything else is graphically glitched. If you have any other suggestions or ideas feel free to share, I'd appreciate it thanks.👍😎👌
@LIRetroGaming2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I’m not really sure. I don’t have too much experience with repairing those carts

Is it possible that the old chip just needed a reflow instead of being replaced entirely?
@LIRetroGaming Жыл бұрын
I don’t believe so. I inspected the chip and the connections between the pins and motherboard were solid

I had a baby blue screen on boot up after I did a jailbar capacitor fix on my pc engine, it was working before so I was confused as to what happened. Much later on, I reflowed solder on the pins for the hu card slot and I crossed my fingers, and somehow that worked for me
@LIRetroGaming3 жыл бұрын
Nice! Glad you figured out what it was and got it working again

I ruined a chip on a pc engine by doing an rgb mod, it still works but the blue colour won't work on rgb, I believe it was something to do with a ground loop because the monitor was still plugged in and I touched up a loose connection.

If you're going to attempt to drag solder, use a knife tip.

I love chip quick but it's just so expensive.
@LIRetroGaming3 жыл бұрын
It’s a little pricey that’s true, but really the only good option if you have to remove surface mount chips. I don’t use it for any other applications so I don’t need to buy it regularly
