There's a recall on them due to weak valve springs and a lot of people have had their engine blow after getting the valve springs replaced. If it's already had the valve springs replaced and been driven 3000+ miles without any issues it should be OK.

The low power is a common complaint among people who don’t know much or enough about the 86 or the AE86. These two cars were handling and drifting icons, not stoplight warriors. However that doesn’t stop people from increasing the power who want to. I think the engine was an excellent choice for this platform regardless of the power complaints.

Burako Shimazaki they get shitty fuel economy for a car of that weight and power output and they have a horrendous powerband in stock form. They sound good and can hold a good amount of power but I would have much rather had a Toyota engine. Even with a header and tune, the powerband still sucks. Much improved but still not great.

CSmittyBurz on the contrary they get great fuel economy for a car this size and output of 100ps per liter. I can drive from central Japan to Takayama in my 2013 manual 86 on less than 1/8th a tank. However I do agree that a Toyota design for he engine or at least an iron block for the current design would have been welcome. However since this can handle great with a boxer, it still holds a place in my heart.

If you take REAL DATA FROM A WHOPPING 7.1 million miles driven in a 2013 FRS the average was 27.3 from real owners... That's far from shitty, way better than the much lighter much smaller engine miata

I've a 2016 BRZ TS and I've supercharged the engine because the fact of the matter is, the car really doesnt have enough power, even in the "performance" version. The TS does come with some really cool STi stuff on it but nothing that increases horsepower.
