Loved that video!! That was one of the best so far!! It was so neat to see the extreme crab on the crosswind and then you add rudder and aileron correction. You just nailed those landings. Also really liked the multiple camera angles on the first landing. Great video Ben, you are an inspiration to all. Keep up the great videos.

Hi Ben, great video as always, spotted you at Charlton Park on Sunday afternoon, we were the crazy couple waving at you on your taxi after landing and then on our departure in the Jabiru with the dog in the back, this was our second time meeting, first was on your cross country qualifying to clench common last year. If we ever see you again I'll be happy to take you up in the 4 seat Jabiru if you fancy a go. Until next time, keep the videos coming, Jason.

Great practice heading up in a day like that! Winds not always going to be down the runway so make the most of crosswinds at your local strips where everything is familiar and practice the various techniques (wing down is my personal preference), means you're less likely to get caught out at other less familiar strips!

Hi Ben. Great video. I'm a student pilot and I fly a C42 out of Elstree which is about 65 nm east/southeast of Kemble. I'll be flying this Monday. Elstree has a nice cafe if you ever want to drop in. Look out for G-FLBY (possibly) doing a touch and go around 1pm this Monday.
@davidbaker71684 жыл бұрын
Hi Aidan, I take it you are learning with fly by light. How are you finding it there and how many hours are you in to your training now?
@AidanSmithmusic4 жыл бұрын
@@davidbaker7168 You're right. I'm enjoying it. I'm taking it quite slow with my training because of finances and the fact I've moved away from London but I've connected well with my instructor. Elstree can be quite busy sometimes which is good for developing good radio skills. I have about 25 hours under my belt and solo'd at 18 hours. Have you been to Elstree?

Lovely stuff as always mate. Both techniques nicely demonstrated too! I’m spoilt at Brownshutters having cross runways, could probably do with a bit of crosswind practice soon tbf.

"Blowing a hooley" 🤣... any crosswind is challenging. It's hard enough in the PA28s with a 12kt crosswind. It must be even tougher in the microlight. Into wind aileron and opposite rudder is my technique of choice too. You handled these landings really well. Really nice flying Ben 👍
@BenAtkinsonVideos4 жыл бұрын
Hey Cj! Thanks mate. Ha that’s interesting, would love to come see what a pa28’s like in a cross. Yeh I feel more in control, of course you could run out of deflection and start drifting if the wind picks up too much (especially in a microlight I guess)...thanks mate
@CJThePilot4 жыл бұрын
I believe my flying club only allow students to fly up to a 10kt crosswind solo. With the instructor it's a bit more, which I have flown in on occasion. Once PPL I think I'll take my time to build confidence before I attempt anything too daring 👍
@happyclappygiraffe26364 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, really enjoying these videos as a prospective PPL student. Thanks for taking the time to record and edit! I'm interested to know your opinion on the C42 vs Eurostar vs Skraynger Nynja? Maybe you could cover this in an upcoming episode? I'm currently thinking of building a Nynja and then doing my NPPL(M) training in it.
@BenAtkinsonVideos4 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks very much that’s great to hear. Funnily enough I’m a third of the way through filming a shootout episode - with an RV pilot who’s not flown any of them before. Expect that in a couple weeks hopefully
@musoseven82184 жыл бұрын
Nice one Ben, good to practice these things. Shame that the cross wind runway isn't in use at Kemble. With the SR Swift and Eurostar there's more porridge stirring than with the C42? Has the SR Swift got bigger ailerons and rudder than the Eurostar, thus better in a cross wind?
@BenAtkinsonVideos4 жыл бұрын
Yeh true! Though, if it was - I wouldn’t be as proficient in crosswind landings! There’s too many jumbos in the way too! Haha. Umm...yes possibly, for different reasons. The skyrangers a little looser on the controls...so you naturally have to move the stick more. And the Eurostar’s a little less stable so in less than ideal conditions again, you sometimes end up moving the stick about a bit. C42 is stable and has Rods rather than cables for most if not all controls so stick movement is drastically reduced - particularly over skyranger
@BenAtkinsonVideos4 жыл бұрын
Saying that - the two high wing aircraft are equally good in a cross...especially for wing down approach
@musoseven82184 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben thanks, interesting insights, it didn't dawn on me that Ikarus' had rods and the other two have cables. Interesting though.
@musoseven82184 жыл бұрын
The lower wing 'suffers' a bit from ground effect? And the Eurostar has smaller ailerons? The latest, US spec, Harmony version (not the European version) has a better wing, bigger ailerons, rudder etc and wider cockpit, but it's 600kgs 'Light sport'. Hopefully the UK will get 600 kg accreditation soon.
@BenAtkinsonVideos4 жыл бұрын
Muso Seven it’s only the skyranger that has cables ! I think the c42 has cables for flaps..could be 100% wrong on that. Eurostar definitely rods

So, using a subliminal message near the start and “Yes it is B**** Sad”. Now in the film about Charles Lindbergh’s flight across the Atlantic, he asks the question about a fly in his plane, if it added to the weight of the aircraft. What is your answer? I had it as a project for aerodynamic studies, so know the answer but will keep quiet for now. Oh and the fly's ground speed is the same as yours unless it flies forward or back in the cockpit, then it is higher or low by its relitive speed to yours.
@BenAtkinsonVideos4 жыл бұрын
Ha thanks fascinating....I’m gonna say it does. If it’s landed on a surface? Ha very good. Fast fly !
@flyingkub4 жыл бұрын
@@BenAtkinsonVideos In teacher mode, give a full answer Ben :-)
@BenAtkinsonVideos4 жыл бұрын
Flying Kub no idea Sir ! 😂
@flyingkub4 жыл бұрын
@@BenAtkinsonVideos Well the answer is your aircraft has the weight of the fly acting on it no matter if it is flying or not. Obviously if it is sitting on the aircraft its weight is directly transferred to you airframe but if it is flying then the fact it is moving air down to support its weight in flight means that down wash is still pushing down on your aircraft so it still has to support the weight of the fly (Newtons law for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, so the action of supporting the fly means the reaction downward of the air has to equal it). I used very sensitive scales and a clear box to prove this theory and was happy to find Newton was right.
