Great podcast, gents! Tech is great until it doesn’t work😉 I totally agree on the points of knowing what you need and pricing equipment in that category. I love my Ryobi yard and hand tools, the One+ system is great, but it wouldn’t be the right equipment for some yards so going by price alone isn’t a great choice to make.

I used it commercially, didn’t work out. Instead of using direct drive electric motors they use one motor and split the power to the blades through 4 gears. This would all be fine if the gears where not made of plastic…. Hit something this mower and it will shear teeth of the gears, a horrible noise follows and it’s days are numbered and of course parts are not readily available

Glad to hear you touching on the self-propelled how you need to push the mower forward (after having it propelling itself) to kind of unlock what I can only assume is like a sprag clutch. before it will roll backward freely.... My husqvarna 347ivx was bad with that, I used it to go up the really steep part at the side of my house (bought it basically for this purpose) and it's so steep you can't turn around (and can't push)... so I would walk it up the steep part, stop the slef propelled and try to roll it back down toward me, but it would just drag the wheels... A real PITA, had to get used to giving it a bit of an extra manual push at the end to disengage the sprag to let it roll backward freely... Ended up selling it for a HRU216 and it doesn't suffer the same issue.

In terms of price assumptions my rule is: Cheapest = generally repairable with standard parts and hand tools Expensive = most likely proprietary parts, not as repairable, may need specialty tooling I do regular maintainence on all my small engines so best advice is learn how to rebuild/replace carburettors and your engine will keep running for a very long time. Poor small engine maintainence is the number 1 reason people throw away perfectly good equipment, probably beneficial to do an episode on carby cleaning for people who don’t know.

I got a new mower, it does not go quite as high as my old one. I mowed today, the buffalo looks great but the other type of grass we have looks like ive butchered it. Its even quite yellow. Would this be from all the rain we have had in sydney recently, or did i really butcher it? 😂

Greenworks Commercial makes walk-behind mowers in four deck diameters: 21, 22, 25, and 30. The 30 came out in late 2023; the 22 in 1Q 2024. The 30 and 22 are far more rugged, with considerably more power, faster blade speeds, and the ability to use a 12- or 20-amp-hour "suitcase battery." They are priced accordingly. If you're thinking about the 30, try before you buy; owners say it's front-heavy; without casters, it can be clumsy to turn and exhausting to use. The 22 might be the finest electric walk-behind that will be built for the rest of this decade.
