A strange goal on his international debut by Dennis Wise is enough to give England victory away to Turkey in a European Championship qualifier in Izmir in May 1991. Yet England produce an unconvincing performance and are almost punished by their hosts, who despite lying bottom of the group look much more dangerous than in previous years (England beat them 8-0 away in 1984 and at home in 1987). It is a crucial day in the group for England, as main rivals Republic of Ireland and Poland draw 0-0 with each other allowing Graham Taylor's men to go top.

Like England were that great in Italy in *all* real honesty. They had a kind group-stage/knockouts to reach that semi-final in Turin, (the only game where they actually excelled), and severely huffed, puffed, fluked and scrapped to get there. And who can forget how many fans/media were *screaming* for Bobby Robson to be gone before the Belgium game? It was also player-power that made Robson and his FA overlords change their mentality and tactics before that tournament that gave it way (may have had Gascoigne stuck on the bench all Italia 90' otherwise). Also, England, along with West Germany and Holland (who under-performed *massively* that year), had the best squad there.

And who says the Germans didn't scrap to get there? 2-1, 1-0, 1-1, pens and 1-0 in their knockout phase AND they had the UAE and Colombia in their group - much kinder than England's group. And what are you calling a fluke? Belgium should never have got to ET. Barnes had a great volley disallowed in the Second half. Lineker had a good goal disallowed against the Dutch. England missed just as many chances in the quarter final than Cameroon. Bollocks.

@@DannyBoy777777 Not sure where you are getting your figures from, in the group W Germany won 4-1, 5-1 and drew with Colombia, beat the Dutch 2-1 in the Second Round and Czechoslovakia 1-0 in the QF…they were getting the job done as well as anyone up to the SF. I don’t recall that Colombia side of Valderrama, Rincon, Higuita etc as being some kind of group pushover (look how they would be fancied to do well in 94). I thought England played pretty well vs Belgium but I thought the latter were even better and hit the post twice - they were unlucky to go out in the 120th min. Group F was a trainwreck but then none of the other 3 teams covered themselves in glory either and England at least did enough to edge out on top - loads of successful teams have started out slow and grown throughout the tournament as the cliche goes. I think Italy have to be counted in terms of squad strength - Zenga, Baresi, Maldini, Donadoni, Giannini, Bergomi, Vialli, Baggio - Schillaci was an outside bet to even play and Baggio wasn’t a starter in the first couple of games. They could call on the likes of Ciro Ferrara and Roberto Mancini if needed.
