While in the last video we looked at the current energy supply in Turkey, in this video we want to look at the disputes arising in the eastern Mediterranean. In particular, how unresolved conflicts between Turkey and Greece in the Aegean and Cyprus are affecting the current search for gas fields in the area.

As you know there is a decision of Athens court that admits the intervention of Turkey is not an invasion! Beside of the such factors you continue telling lies! Today is not April fools day you know! So do not try to put people in a fool stiuation! Ok! And if you really want to learn which country is the invader in cyprus you can find the name of the invader state is Greece in cyprus! Greece is the first country which established the terrorist organization EOKA! That terrorist organization killed both Greek cypriots and Turkish cypriots! But people like you knows it well but you prefer telling lies! :))) You think you are the most smart one but that is exactly false! I know you will ignore the subjects what I talked about here! But keep calm down! Before ignoring the realities I advice you to reach the speech of the president of cyprus which was done in 19 july 1974 in UN! Yes man you will find that Greece killed so many innocent people in order to violate the island and tried to establish ENOSIS as you know it! And in that speech you will learned that Greece is the invader in cyprus! Greeks are not victim! Yes man when you read the speech of Bishop Macarios you will find the unswers of such questions ok! @@zorro-hq6qp Greece did not invade Cyprus though. In the 1970s, Cyprus made a democratic option to unify with Greece and the Turks were in the minority. Turkey did not like that and unilaterally invaded Cyprus. Only after Turkey sent troops did Greece replicate. This invasion was a breach in international law, and a breach of the Lausanne treaty. The moment Turkey invaded a third party, Greece no longer had an obligation to demilitarize the Aegean Islands. Like it or not, Northern Cyprus is recognized by one single country in the entire world while Greek Cyprus is recognized by the entire world. So rather than telling lies about what really happened, how about Turkey for once walks like it talks? Erdogan always blabs about respecting international law, but there are UN resolution that called for the Turkish army to leave Northern Cyprus and to allow the country unite back again. Based on the UN resolitions, only the 1st invasion of Cyprus was counted as somewhat legal. But that only captured 3% of the island. The second invasion, which happened after the Greek military Junta collapsed, was labeled unanimously as illegal by the UN Security Council and it is labeled internationally as an invasion (Resolution 353 & 360)

Bob Ross No it's not. It's presenting turkey's propaganda as facts without any critical thinking. Greece is not trying to limit Turkey's rights what so ever. Demilitarisation of Greek islands is a totaly differant subject and Turkey only uses it to force Greece into a weak position in order to impose its will by means of threats of invasion as they did in 1974 in the demilitarised island of Cyprus. Lots of Greek islands are not concerned by the treaty of Lausanne because they where greek before or became greek after. Kastellorizo was Italian till 1945 and nothing prevents Greece from defending it with its armed forces. The turkish claim that all the aegean islands should be demilitarised is laughable.

I like how you mentioned the arrangement for India and Sri Lanka and how they settle for a median. I'm from the South Indian state of Kerala and we regularly hear news of how Sri Lankan fishermen are caught by the Indian coast guard and vice versa because they might be in the wrong zone, and this just makes me think how artificial all these borders are. Here you have ancient fishing communities who are restricted by international treaties they've never seen or participated in and having to spend nights in jail for being on the wrong side of the _water_ ....

They have to be enforced because otherwise whoever has the largest fishing fleet gets all the fish. In the case of India/Sri Lanka it's a far bigger problem for Sri Lanka since India has a bigger fleet. Unfortunately before regulation became stronger, the area between Sri Lanka and India became badly overfished and now it's tough for everyone. The only way to bring fishing back is to simply end fishing for a while. =/ The biggest offender is China, which has a habit of sending its fleets across the entire planet into EEZs of countries too poor to defend them.

The problem With this example that he gives is that he tries to connect the two but they don't have the same circumstance.what you say is happening in Greece too but when they cross the maritine border they were inform to leave and thats that but the last decades Turkey does that intentional with fisherman so to cross the border but still the same actions. The difference with your case is that Turkey does that with warships if it was just fisherman it will still be acceptable.

Yes, but the so called "Greek" map it is not a map that Greece has created or anything. it is a map made by the Geneva University for the EU in the past based on the international laws and not by Greece. Greece's point of view is that as long as we haven't signed any treatment between us about the EEZ, you don't have the right to make researches in that area where my islands are. On the other hand, the Turkish "Blue Homeland" map is an official map made by Turkey and includes also half of the Aegean Sea. Yes half of the Greek islands are included on this map. This is is the real reason why Greece is willing to spend (once again) more money for warplanes and warships than any exploration of gas may give in the future. It is the sovereignty of the Greek islands we care about and not that @!#@ gas. And this gas exploration it is just "happened" to start now, while a lot of stuff going on with Turkey's behavior lately and it's worsening relationships with USA and EU and even bringing a war close to Russia this time.

@@johanlassen6448 Please consider the following. Just because someone presents a situation that you don't like, it doesn't automatically make them biased. Which law does Turkey violate? Are you, by any chance, refering to the treaty which Turkey didn't sign? Here's some exposition, if you don't sign an agreement, it means you didn't agree to its terms, which means you are not legally bound by it. Even then, the same agreement says each situation should be handled specifically and a just distribution should be made. This is no agreement, this is an attempt to use "international law" to rob an enemy country of its rightful borders. Basically, it is how wars work in the democratic world of 2020's. Please be honest. Have you seen how little the area Greece's claims leave for Turkey? Imagine if that was France or Germany in Turkey's place, would you still say that country deserved that tiny excuse for a sea? @@truthseeker4931 do you really think because of one single island, greece should have such a vast economic zone over the mediterannean? The EEZ that turkey claims as its own isnt a thing which is made up. That border has been referenced and defined multiple times in history like 1913 london agreement, 1923 lozan agreement etc. By that logic, should spain EEZ reach all the way to the morrocan coast because they have a few islands and cities there? No, it shouldnt. Morroco and spains EEZ equally distributes the sea of gibraltar while economic rights of spanish cities and little islands are limited to their territorial waters. Turkey says that it should have the EEZ that he claims because that territory is 200 nautical miles away from his coast. While also claiming that the greek kastelorizo island's economic rights should be limited to its territorial waters. Which is completley fair and making sense. Greece says it should have all the EEZ he claims over the medditranean because of a single island near the coast of turkey, far away from greece. So tell me, who is the logical one here?

So it does not accurately describe the problem then, since the entire affair is the fault of Turkey. It is not Greece that has a standing casus belli on Turkey in the event of Turkey claiming its international rights after all. The fact is that Greece is operating under the limits of international law, while Turkey is blatantly ignoring it and even denying islands like Crete and Rhodes territorial waters while attempting to enforce this with constant threats of war. In order to make this video more potent in information regarding the matter , i believe that foreign policy of both countries should be included as well as current political systems. Additionally , a link of the treaty should be included. For instance the militarisation of Greek islands suggest an agressive policy on the Greek side and although you do say about the greek claim of the need in such an act,i again believe that you could include some incidents over the years, if not possible in the video,then again in the description. Generally i believe informing videos as such should move the viewer's interest in order to investigate the matter more and coclude a personal opinion. Of course a very informing video and great work, maybe make a second video adding more information on the matter .

Greece on the other had is part of the UN treaty and is just applying it. Turkey is the one threatenig of war here. Greece is legalist. You see Greece is not taking anything from Turkey but from the international waters. International waters, as the name suggests are not the proprety of Turkey. Singing treaties will fallen states is not a solution. Threatening an EU membre is not a good idea. Art. 42 of the treaty of the EU says that in case one state member is invaded, all other state members shall provide help by all means. This means Turkey, by invading Greek waters, exposes itself to a war with 29 advanced countries. Eastern Rome that your people so much wanted to resemble and conquer was comprised of all those "peasants" that eventually became unified under the same hellenistic culture. @@user-qi4us5zi7f The overlapping area between Greece and Turkey will be small and insignificant and can make a treaty for those parts but Turkey disputes the 12 NM miles even for all the islands in the Aegean and for the areas without any overlap. This is against the international law which now exists and Turkey doesn't sign just because they don't like it even if most other countries in the area have signed. Also the treaty for the Black Sea after the collapse of the USSR was signed way after the international law for the EEZ was implemented (The international law was implemented in 1982 and the first treaty between Turkey and USSR was signed in 1986 and after the collapse of the USSR the new treaty was signed in the 90's) and the treaty was based on this law, so no it was not a 'special case' Turkey just doesn't accept any international law that they don't like.

@Pengoto K fyi jurisprudence is not binding for the international courtbregarding the law of the sea, moreover the country that is afraid me most to appeal to the court is turkey, because the coast line in the Aegean sea is 80% Greece 20% turkey so the decision will be proportional regarding the eez but the trap for turkey is in castelorizo and the small islands near the turkish coasts, if the court accept the greek position that those islands are part of the dodecanese island complex, which historically is true because the owner of dodecanese had always those small Isles, then turkey is fucked and the middle line will be set in front of them and turkey will be trapped with no eez

Excellent and unbiased account of the issues involved. There are too few of these on the internet today. I do wish you would have mentioned the Blue Homeland debate. Now there’s an issue that can’t be resolved... it seems to be an unattainable dream. Sorry, but the Ottoman Empire is gone. And if they (the islands) truly belonged to Turkey, after a relatively brief two hundred to four hundred years, why didn’t Ataturk just keep on going after he destroyed Smyrna? Those islands, geographically, politically, and demographically are Greek and have been for thousands and thousands of years.

You guys need to refresh your history knowledge. Those twelve islands - which are given to Italians after 1911-1912 Italian - Turkish war. Ottomans lost this war because the 1st Balkan War started. Whatever, Ottomans and Italians signed and agreement. Which Italians call Trattato di Losanna and Turks call it Ouchy in order to avoid confusion with Lousanne Treaty. According to this agreement, Italy accepted to give those Islands back to the Ottomans. But they never did that. After losing WW2, Italy gave those islands to the greece in 1947. So those Islands become greek 9 years after death of Atatürk. Its because you lived there for a long time doesnt make it yours. I am sorry, Byzantine Empire is gone as well. The borders of the countries are being determined by the agreements. So yeah, they are yours... For now :) :)

the international maritime laws have a general solution but the reality (oceanography) is much more complicated. that's why there is a lot of disputes either solved or ongoing. the current laws might put one side at a disadvantage. since fairness must be the sole purpose of the laws, they need to be updated when faced with a complex case. so should the small islands (which are the natural extensions of the Anatolian peninsula) have a greater eez than the mainland which has a much longer costline? does the entire area belong to Greece or Turkey? well I'm not sure cuz I'm not an expert and I think you are not too. so lets not try to legitimise one argument over another. anyways I hope a fairer solution will be agreed on by both sides and this will be sorted out peacefully. I wanna see the both sides happy at the end of the day. all the best. edit: grammar

@@enessahin4775 thank you! Great reply! I agree with the spirit of the answer but… According to the current Turkish claims, all the island don’t have any influence in the Exclusive Economic Zones. This is not just a local dispute, it is a complete disagreement with the international rules. If this was the case, GB, Iceland, most of Denmark, Ireland, just to name a few European countries, wouldn’t have an exclusive zone at all. After many years of negotiations the two countries had almost come to an agreement about 15 years ago. Unfortunately, the incompetence of the Greek prime minister at the time (karamanlis) that didn’t want to take the political cost of this decisions and possibly other factors didn’t allow it to happen. That agreement was respecting the principles of the maritime law and was implementing more “creative” solutions when a small island close to Turkish coastline was involved. Maybe one day in the future the two countries will be ready for such a solution. Thank you again Enes for your reply. PS: We are not experts but still we can disagree and argue according to our best understanding 🤷🏻‍♂

@@alexm9148 thanks for your understanding! i also like your thoughts Alexandros. well i personally believe the agreement will offer a solution based on the idea that the islands have some eez but not as much as the Greek mainland would. just a theory. but the other problem in Cyprus is not easy one to solve and goes beyond the maritime rules as there ve been long-standing political problems. the Greek side is currently benefiting from being internationally recognised n making agreements with other international oil companies n the Turkish side is conducting its own exploration activities which i believe the both are not the right thing to do at this stage. the Greek n Turkish sides should stop ignoring each other n immediately solve the political problems first before taking actions in the sea. soo lets see what the time will tell us. hope we both will be there with the competent governments. anyways thanks again appreciate it👍

One wants to take the ideological high ground and think that they should solve it using dialogue and support Greece in this case. Unfortunately, this is one of those edge cases where the law of the seas creates a map that may be from a Turkish perspective is unfair(just like how the US didn’t sign UNCLOS, because to them it’s unfair or restricts them). I, personally, do not see this situation being resolved without a Greek compromise, which again would be completely unfair to them. Although, both sides are clinging to claims to have the bigger portion of the pie. In negotiations, I hope they can both leave some part of that to reach a settlement. Let's see how things roll out. I am a Bangladeshi btw, and our country solved our maritime border disputes with Myanmar and India in international court. This seems not to be open to Turkey, it seems.

@nafis_zaki
@nafis_zaki 2 жыл бұрын
@@thesummergamer7245 i didn't exactly say that. What I meant was, this being an edge case, Turkey will not agree to UNCLOS or international court's rulling. Just like USA didn’t sign UNCLOS as they thought it was unfair to them. And from my inexperienced eye I can see that Greece having so much island means that it would have an upper edge over Turkey, no matter how. So, my opinion is that, the only way to solve this is through negotiations between Greece and Turkey, where both sides would need to give some reasonable concessions to the other side. If you think Greece should get what it deserves, that ain't happening, nor is Turkey going to get its way, so this whole area would remain an underutilised economic region for both. This was my opinion. However, I am just a rando in the internet who saw how the Bangladesh, Myanmar, India issue was solved through dialogue and projecting my bias over the issue over the same Greece-Turkey issue. You may reject my opinion if you find it unacceptable.
