The Richter Scale Magnitude was 7.8. This is equal to the Mercalli Intensity of nine and represents a Violent Intensity. The strongest and well-designed buildings will have structure damage. There will be partial collapse in substantial buildings. The houses will be shifted off of their concrete foundations. The soil underground will lose its stiffness and become soft like sand. Underground pipes are broken.

The Turkish Government already knew those buildings could not stand the Earthquakes. They are simply shifting the blame for a catastrophe they are to blame for. I lived through a 6.9 Earthquake in Athens in 1982. i did not see a single building destroyed. 97% or more were absolutely OK. Some had a few cracks at worst. The older places such as my block built by Turks I'd thought must be destroyed had not one crack. The old man below me laughed at my surprise saying Concrete frame structure thick walls filled with loose stones that give back and forth. 'This is earthquake proof.' All these areas are familiar with earthquakes so know what to do and what not to do. The Turkish Government is absolutely to blame for this horrific tragedy that will continue on for a long time yet,

If that’s the case, then Erdogan must file charges against himself - seeing as how he’s been running the country for over TWENTY YEARS, and he’s the one responsible for making sure that Turkey didn’t have another disaster like in 1999. But he didn’t do a damn thing to protect or prepare the Turkish people, nor to earthquake-proof Turkish homes and buildings. Erdogan instead spent the past two decades plundering Turkey’s state coffers to enrich himself and his cronies, all the while beefing up the military to consolidate his power. One of the first things he did after the earthquakes hit was declare a 3-month state of emergency, thereby giving this despot even _more_ power. It’s not because he cares about the safety or security of the Turkish people. No, it’s because he’s up for re-election in May - and he knows that the voters know that he’s the only leader they’ve had since 1999. Who knows what he’s going to do with all of these additional powers? What comes to mind: January 6 in Washington DC, January 8 in Brasília.

Calm down. Erdogan isn't God and he hasn't created the Earth and isn't in the power of predicting or stopping it from moving. It's the sins of mankind as God has mentioned it in both Quran (sura 42:30, 29:40) and Deuteronomy, Torah (28:20) that cause such disasters. For instance Deuteronomy 28:20 tells "The Lord will send on you curses, confusion and rebuke in everything you put your hand to, until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin because of the evil you have done in forsaking Him (God)". Quran sura 29:40 " So We seized each for their sin. We let loose upon some a violent tornado with showers of stones; some were overtaken by a mighty Cry; some were caused to be swallowed up by the earth, and some We drowned. Allah would not wrong them, but it is they who wronged themselves". Sura 42:30 "Whatever misfortune befalls you is a consequence of your own deeds. But much of it He forgives".

@@gdewyg actually, there was suppose to be upgrades to newly constructed buildings. Built with earthquakes in mind. Apparently, many new buildings collapsed. This newsclip mentions this. You can build buildings that can withstand earthquakes. Look @ japan for example, there are atleast one building thats on large springs.

Building built with deep and wide enough foundations taking into consideration soil conditions during earthquake (soil liquefaction) and more than adequate iron bar reinforcements and with limited floors are generally earthquake durable if they are made mainly by concrete pour technique since that integrates the entire building as one. These buildings appear to be built like leggo parts joining and with as little of iron bars and column thickness- thus the Pancaking

How old were the collapsed buildings in Turkey? How did they pass inspection?
@ervaunal1054 Жыл бұрын
Some of the buildings were relatively new, with some being constructed within the past two years. Unfortunately, many mayors are known to allow buildings to pass safety inspections in exchange for bribes. However, the district of Erzin in Hatay is known for its strict adherence to building safety regulations and has a reputation for not accepting bribes. As a result, no buildings in the district were destroyed during the event, although some sustained damage.

Here in Nepal after earthquake 7 yrs ago the govt.changed the rules for construction... the estimate or building cost doubled for a normal residential building for high rise building may be tripled the cost.

the district of Erzin in Hatay with a strict adherence to building safety regulations was not affected. Not a single building in the district wad destroyed during the event. So yes proper buildings can withstand major earthquakes

A earthquake of a Magnitude of 7.8 is pretty strong quake. I would think that even here in the US would have a lot of damage. But with type of construction and the materials used, they didn't have a chance. I am sure there will be a lot of people arrested here. 113 is just the tip of the iceberg.

What people don't understand is that the magnitude and intensity of an earthquake are different things.The intensity of the earthquake increases logarithmically, not linearly but not. In other words, there is a difference in intensity between two earthquakes of magnitude 7 and 8. Two earthquakes of magnitude 7 in two different places can be felt of very different magnitude (proximity to the surface, soil structure, type of earthquake, etc.). most of the earthquakes that occur in Japan occur at a depth of 60-70 km. It is felt in more space, but less in severity (not its size)... The first of the two earthquakes that occurred in Turkey was at a depth of 24 km and the other at a depth of 10 km.. You must be crazy, is this a joke?.. The city of Hatay, which is one of the places where the destruction is intense in Turkey, is a very soft ground consisting of alluvial soils. There are certainly engineers and contractors to blame, but stop blaming a country so much when people are in so much pain.
