Turkey vultures lack a syrinx and have an olfactory cavity nearly as large as the tyrannosaurus (actually bigger, proportionally). This is a niche-decedent of a tyrannosaur, an animal that evolved from a smaller hunter much like a vulture.

last summer I was in a pool by myself and Turkey vulture came and sat on the fence. I had been told they were ugly and awful and never came close enough to humans to really see them. Anyway, it had ivory beak and claws and sometimes it spread its wings in a stretch. I stayed quiet and bird remained there almost 15 minutes. After this when I see this bird soaring I put my arms out and call out to come down. After a year of this the vulture came down and soared over my head, almost touching the roof of my place. Thought I should look up info and found this wonderful video. I adore this bird, have not seen them in a crowd of other vultures - yet. thank you!

Only saw a wild turkey vulture once on top of my neighbor's house while I was cleaning my attic. It had it's wings spread while perched. It freaked the crap outta me when I noticed it.

I live in Bisbee AZ. The vultures return in March every year and leave in October. There was a “welcome back” parade & festival on Saturday, the 12th. However, I have yet to see any vultures in my part of town although there be maybe some further northwest. Our town has three distinct areas & is very spread out. I was first fascinated by their flight because it’s absolutely so beautiful and they obviously enjoy flying and gliding especially on windy days. But this past year I was sick and when I returned to walking I took a different route which passed by a tree in which they roost. So I became fascinated with them coming and going from their tree every day and then took it upon myself to learn everything I could about turkey vultures. What a fascinating creatures!

We saw a whole flock of these magnifient birds at Custer State Park hanging out at the beach in the early morning hours. There was always one sentinel that stood with his wings spread to ward off whatever threatened them. They would switch out between two males.
