Duolingo starts with " Yekek yerim" and " içki icerim" I eat and I drink. To an English listener this is nonsense and an incomplete sentence to them. Their mind responds with "of course you do, we all do" . Their English mind wants to hear "I eat chocolate every day" (Her gün çikolata yiyorum).

I started watching a Turkish telenovela this weekend, it's dubbed but there is often text in Turkish, I don't speak Turkish but I would at least like to have the correct pronunciation in my head of certain words when reading them , now I realize that I have read everything wrong, it is by reading them correctly that we have a chance of learning, even if some translations are fanciful. It's "Brave and Beautiful".

Just starting with Turkish and I'm noticing how sometimes "e" sounds that in English (e.g. get, set, Beth), and sometimes more like an "a" (like ban, man, grab). In two examples she gives "el" and "ben", the two vowels sound pretty different to me. Of course it's nothing compared to the variation found in English though.
@john433973 ай бұрын
That is correct. It all depends on the word. But no Turkish Teachers fully explain it. And trying to find out in which words these changes happen is very difficult for non Turkish speakers to discover.

I would love to see a video dedicated to pronouncing the "R" letter. It seems to be done differently when it's at the beginning vs middle vs end of a word. As an English speaker, it's a very difficult.
@cryingsaints4 ай бұрын
I agree, this is what I am struggling with! Especially the r’s at the end of words I can’t figure out how to properly pronounce it
@john433973 ай бұрын
In general you have to roll your R's a little like Americans or west country speakers of England or like how you have to say "R's" from the back of the throat like in the German language. It is mostly difficult for British English speakers who say the "r" sound with a closed mouth. if you don't Rrrrooolll roll the "r" in Turkish most Turks will not understand you.
@adolfstalin8897Ай бұрын
As a native Turkish speaker, we pronounce the "r" by rolling it. However, if the letter r comes to the end of the word, we can pronounce it in two different ways. For example, the verb "yapıyor" is generally pronounced as "yapıyo" among the public. If pronounced formally, the last letter r sounds like a sound between r and sh (ş). Just like the "yağmur" sound at 3:47 . However, the word "yağmur" is not pronounced by removing the last letter r, as in the verb "yapıyor". Generally, if the last word in verbs is r, it may not be said in informal environments.
@bebekchez_49718 күн бұрын
When it’s pronounced at the end of a word it’s called a “voiceless alveolar tap” that’s why it almost sounds like “sh”. For example, the sound in Turkish words like ‘bir’.
@john4339718 күн бұрын
@@bebekchez_497 It sounds like a very clear and deliberate conscious "sh" sound to new English speakers trying to learn the Turkish language. Turks are unaware they do it. When English speakers try to imitate they sound ridiculous to Turks. It's the same for "wanna" in English. The best description I have heard from a Turk is it's just the speaker quietly letting out a small gasp of air at the end of some "bir" words. It also varies by regional dialect. Try to imagine rolling the "r" similar to an American speaker, then making a small exhausted sound at the end, because you held onto the "r" a little too long.

@melna215 ай бұрын
No, v in Turkish is pronounced as v in English. I’m saying this as a native Turkish speaker. Did you say that because of her pronunciation of the word ‘vowel’ or what?
@Alwaysrenewyourintention2 ай бұрын
@@melna21 how is r pronounced. It's like X sometimes or please explain
@melna212 ай бұрын
@@Alwaysrenewyourintention No, r is not like x. you touch the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth, it’s like normal r. But while pronouncing r at the end of the word, you do the same by breathing out at the same time. Some foreigners might think it sounds like sh sound because of this.
