omg yes I finally got sound going. now if only it wasnt 11 o clock at night... lmao Tip: Oil the ney if its wooden. It helps a lot. just keep practising after that and you should get it. change angles, lip size, etc. for example, I find I dont blow that hard at all but at first I thought I had to do it more. its like the wind "flows" into the ney and not how a flute is played. With a flute, you blow very hard and the sound it "split" when it hits the instrument, but with this ney you will actually feel the wind travel into the flute, or "flow."

It worked instantly for me. Thank you very much. It was much easier than I thought and as you said it is very rewarding the first time you produce a good sound on the ney.

If it's a cane /reed one (not pvc) make sure it's been oiled. If it's really super dry it will be hard even if you already knew how. Also if you know someone that plays, face towards the mirror together while you try. Or maybe it would work with a video.

I've only just started -- literally -- making a sound with a rim-blown flute (a kaval though, not a ney), and the thing that's surprising to me is how little air is needed, barely any at all. Don't really blow down it, just sort of mildly exhale like you're not trying, and if you get a tone, hold it for as long as you can. I play some flute as well, and that takes TONS more air. Getting a sound out of a rim-blown flute feels like trying to touch a soap bubble.
@jcortese33006 жыл бұрын
FWIW, I just only started with a kaval, and that's a very similar instrument. The difference is that you can pull a kaval apart and only practice with the headjoint, which makes it a LOT easier. Maybe you can start with a kaval and then move onto the ney if that's your favorite of the rim-blown flutes.

I first bought an Egyptian Kawala and it was easy for me to get used to it in days. The Turkish ney is impossible, I have trying to blow in it for a month and I can't make sound out of the top three holes. I can only make a sound with the back hole. So my kawala is what I play every time when I can't figure out how to play my ney. Also my ney has cracked after oiling, I let it dry inside a ney case. Not sure if something went wrong.

Hi Kostas! Thank you for the videos, they're great!! I just have a question: I bought a Sah Ney from Turkey. I've been practising for three days now but still can't get out any sound of it...I guess it's fine and I just need some more practice, but I was wondering if this type of Ney requires a different approach or maybe it needs to be oiled...I don't know. I really love the sound of this instrument and I can't wait to make the first notes :-) thank you very much!! Dario (Italy)

Ωραίο βίντεο Κώστα ! Ενδιαφέρομαι να ξεκινήσω και γω να μαθαίνω ney. Στα πλαστικά ney είναι πιο εύκολα μα βγάλεις ήχο ; και επίσης ποσό δύσκολο είναι να μάθεις νότες για κάποιο ο οποίος εχει συνηθίσει στις απλές κλίμακες μουσικές και όχι στις παραδοσιακές του ney;

Page 11 12 The Magic Flute Three brothers went in search of knowledge. The eldest was called Rajuna, the middle one Tapa and the youngest, Manja. While studying, Manja turned out to be the cleverest. He was well- liked by their teacher and this made Rajuna and Tapa envious. Before they completed their studies, the brothers had to get the magic bamboo flute from the sum- mit of Bukit Berapit. The three men started out on their journey. After walking some distance they arrived at a crossroads. "Which road should we take, Brother?" asked Manja. "I think the wide road to the right is the right one. What do you think, Tapa?_ asked Rajuna. "I agree, Brother," said Tapa. "What about you, Manja?" asked Rajuna. "I think the narrow road to the left is the right one," said Manja. "Well, we do not agree with you," said Rajuna, "so let's go our separate ways." Rajuna and Tapa continued their journey. While climbing the hill, they heard a voice. "Where are you going, Rajuna?" "We're going to the top of the hill to find the bamboo flute," said Rajuna quickly. Immediately, he was turned to stone. The same fate be- fell Tapa. Manja who had chosen the nar- row road met an old man at the foot the hill. "Sir, may I ask you something?" asked Manja. "Yes, what is it, son?" asked the old man. "I know very little. Can you give me advice on how to reach the top of Bukit Berapit?" asked Manja. Seeing that Manja was humble and sincere, the old man agreed to help him. "While climbing, do not at any time respond to any greeting or look behind you," said the old man. "Why, Sir?" asked Manja. "What you would hear is the voice of the Devil. If you reply or look behind you will come under an evil spell. You will be turned to stone," said the old man. On his journey, many voices greeted Manja. Manja his closed up both his ears with a piece of cloth. Only when he reached the top the hill did he remove the cloth from his ears. All at once, he heard pleasant voices. He had found the cluster of bamboo. "Greetings, Guardian of the Bamboo! Permit me to take a section of the bamboo," Manja, following the old man's advice. Manja cut a piece of bamboo of the thickness of a big toe. He drilled small holes in it and fashioned a flute out of it. As he descending the hill, he played the flute. To his great surprise, as if by magic, many people appeared. "Thank you, Sir, for rescuing us," said one of the men. "We were cursed and turned to stone. It was your bamboo flute that restored us to our human form again," added another young man. Only then did Manja understand the magic the bamboo flute. As he continued playing the flute, more and more stones turned into men. Among those rescued Rajuna and Tapa, his two older brothers.
